Choose a powder foundation by matching your skin’s depth first, then its undertone; use the brand’s shade guide or try-on as a cross-check, and pick a finish and coverage level that suit how you want to wear it. Shade labels do not translate reliably between brands, and a digital match is a starting point—not a guarantee.
How to find a close shade match

Start with skin depth
Estimate whether your complexion is light, medium, tan, or deep, then look within the product’s own range. Brands organize shades differently: MAC describes its options from lightest through rich, while Estée Lauder describes intensity from light to deep. A shade called “medium” or a particular number is not necessarily equivalent across brands.

Then consider undertone
Undertone is the subtle rosy, neutral, golden, or olive cast beneath the surface of your skin. Estée Lauder’s guide describes cool (C) as rosy, neutral (N) as neither notably pink nor golden, and warm (W) as golden or olive. MAC uses its own coding guidance, including “NC for golden/olive; NW for rosy/neutral-warm.” These are brand-specific descriptions, not a universal classification system, so use the shade descriptions attached to the product you are considering.

Use the brand’s shade tool as a cross-check
Try the selected brand’s current shade finder or virtual try-on to narrow your choices. MAC recommends scanning makeup-free skin in a well-lit room, preferably in natural sunlight; L’Oréal also offers virtual try-on for its powder foundation. Lighting and digital rendering can affect what you see, so treat a suggested match as a shortlist rather than a promise.

Check in natural light if you can
If an in-person tester is available, compare the shade against your face and neck in natural light before buying. This practical check can help you judge whether the depth and undertone look cohesive; there is no single standardized testing protocol established across these product pages.
Choose finish and coverage for the look you want
The powder foundations described here are matte or blur-matte, not radiant-finish examples. Compare the specific product’s coverage, layering directions, shine-control claims, and preparation advice instead of assuming all powder foundations behave alike.

What you need—and what you do not
The essential product is the powder foundation in the closest available shade. A fluffy face brush is an optional tool for a lighter application, not a requirement for choosing a shade; follow the directions for the formula you buy. MAC describes its compact as refillable, so check compatibility with the product’s own refill rather than assuming refills work across lines.
