Choose a portable power station by matching it to the devices you need to run and how long you need them—not by battery capacity alone. Add up those devices’ energy use in watt-hours (Wh), then separately confirm the station can supply their combined running power and any startup surge. The result is a plan for selected loads, not a guarantee that a portable unit can power an entire home.
Start with the devices and outage you need to cover
Decide what must stay on, for how many hours, and under what conditions. A heat wave, hurricane, or brief local outage can create different priorities; as Noah Kittner, an associate professor at the University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, told the Associated Press, “If you’re deciding between different backup power options for what you need, different conditions are going to require different elements, like a heat wave versus a hurricane,” (Associated Press, July 14, 2026).
Write down each essential device, its rated or measured running wattage, the hours you expect to use it, and whether it draws extra power at startup. Use the device label or manual; an appliance category alone is not enough to predict its actual demand. A refrigerator, for example, has a compressor whose startup demand may differ from its running demand.

Estimate energy use in watt-hours
For each device, multiply its watts by the number of hours you plan to run it. Add the results to get a basic energy estimate:

Energy estimate (Wh) = device power (W) × planned runtime (hours)
For example, a device rated at 100 W running for 5 hours uses an estimated 500 Wh. This is a planning calculation, not a runtime promise: actual consumption can vary, and a station does not necessarily deliver all of its stated stored energy to connected devices.
Allow for losses and operating conditions
Add a reasonable planning allowance for conversion and operating losses rather than sizing the station exactly to the arithmetic total. There is no universal loss percentage that applies to every model and load. Usable energy depends on the specific station, load, temperature, battery condition, and discharge limits, so treat manufacturer buffer advice as guidance rather than measured performance for your setup.

Anker SOLIX US gives a theoretical illustration: a 1,000 Wh battery could supply 100 W for 10 hours before real-world losses. That arithmetic helps explain the relationship between capacity and load; it is not a guaranteed result for a particular station or device (Anker SOLIX US buying guide, September 18, 2026).
Do not confuse Wh and W
Wh measures stored energy and helps estimate duration; W measures power delivered at a moment. A station can have ample Wh but still be unable to run an appliance if its inverter’s output rating is too low. Check both numbers against your load list.
Check continuous output and startup surge
Add the running watts of all devices you expect to operate at the same time. The station’s continuous output must cover that combined load. Then check its surge rating against the startup demand of appliances with motors or compressors, such as refrigerators and pumps. A unit that meets the running-watt total may still fail to start one of those devices if its surge capability is insufficient.

Compare the appliance’s label or manual with the station’s specifications. If the appliance’s startup requirement is not stated, do not assume that a particular station will handle it; seek the device maker’s guidance or choose equipment whose compatibility is clearly documented.
Match voltage, outlets, and ports to your equipment
Confirm that the station provides the voltage and connection types your devices require, including the number of outlets needed for simultaneous use. Check USB or DC ports for devices that use them directly. If equipment requires 240 V or split-phase power, verify that the particular station is explicitly designed to provide it; voltage arrangements vary by region, so do not apply a US-specific example to another country.
A portable station is generally a selected-load backup product. Do not plan to energize household wiring with an improvised connection. Circuit-level or 240 V integration requires equipment designed for that use and installation appropriate to local requirements by a qualified professional.

Plan how you will recharge the station
Compare the station’s supported AC, vehicle, and solar charging inputs with the conditions in which you expect to use it. Check the maximum input limits and the likely time available to recharge between outages or periods of use. Solar can extend off-grid operation only when the station accepts a compatible panel and sunlight and other conditions permit; verify electrical and connector compatibility rather than assuming panels are interchangeable.
Also consider whether the battery chemistry, model-specific cycle-life claims, warranty, support, and expansion options fit your intended use. Treat cycle-life and warranty details as model-specific specifications, not category-wide guarantees.

| Guide and intended use | Manufacturer’s stated planning example |
|---|---|
| Anker SOLIX UK: phone and laptop charging | Under 600 Wh and 300–600 W |
| Anker SOLIX UK: weekend camping | 600–1,500 Wh and 600–1,200 W |
| Anker SOLIX UK: short home power cuts | 1,000–2,000 Wh and 1,000–1,800 W |
| Anker SOLIX UK: multi-day appliance backup | 2,000 Wh or more and 2,000 W or more |
| Jackery: essentials during an outage | About 3,000 Wh |
| Jackery: broader everyday backup | About 3,500–3,600 Wh |
| Jackery: larger or longer-duration use | 5,000 Wh or more in expandable systems |
These are each manufacturer’s own examples, not independent guarantees or universal thresholds. Anker SOLIX UK’s ranges pair example capacities with output ranges; Jackery’s guide gives approximate capacity tiers. Jackery says its 3,000 Wh example can run a 200 W refrigerator plus lights and a router for most of a day, but that estimate uses assumed loads and should not be applied to an arbitrary refrigerator or household (Anker SOLIX UK guide, September 2026; Jackery home-outage guide). Build your own estimate from actual device data and desired runtime.
Compare shortlisted stations against your checklist
- Capacity: Is usable energy adequate for the planned loads and hours?
- Power delivery: Do continuous output and startup surge meet the combined load and appliance requirements?
- Compatibility: Are voltage, outlet count, and USB/DC ports right for your devices and region?
- Recharging: Do AC, vehicle, or solar inputs fit your available charging opportunities and limits?
- Practical fit: Can you store and move the station? Check its mass, dimensions, wheels, and handles.
- Longer-term support: Review the specific model’s battery chemistry, cycle-life claims, warranty, service, and expansion options.
- Uninterrupted operation: If a connected device cannot tolerate a brief interruption, check whether the station has a UPS function and whether its switchover behavior meets that device’s needs.
Product specifications and lineups change, so verify current manufacturer documentation for the exact model and region before buying. Independent roundups such as TechRadar’s 2026 comparison can help identify comparison criteria, but rankings and availability can change.
Account for safe use and special requirements
A battery station has no combustion engine or exhaust during normal operation, but that fact alone is not a full safety assessment. Follow the specific model’s manual for charging, operating temperatures, storage, and permitted loads. Do not improvise a connection to house wiring.
For a medical device, check the device maker’s power and backup requirements. If uninterrupted, life-critical operation is needed, plan with the clinician or device supplier and power provider rather than relying on a general portable-station estimate.
