For everyday photos, use your phone camera’s standard or default resolution. Choose a higher-resolution mode when you expect to crop significantly, inspect fine detail, or make a larger print. Higher resolution can preserve more image detail, but the benefit depends on the phone and camera mode—and often comes with larger files.
What phone camera resolution should I use for everyday photos?
For routine pictures you’ll view on a phone or share online, the default setting is a sensible choice. Switch to a higher resolution when you have a specific reason to keep extra detail, such as cropping into the image later or preparing a larger print.
Megapixels measure how many pixels an image contains; they do not describe every factor that affects how a photo looks. A higher megapixel number alone does not guarantee a better-looking result. The camera, lens, processing, capture mode, and intended output all matter, and the available vendor guidance does not establish a universal winner across phones.
Do I need 48MP or 12MP on my phone?
Not for every photo. On supported iPhone models, Apple says 48 MP ProRAW images retain more detail for zooming and cropping, while 12 MP capture produces smaller files. That makes 48 MP useful when you plan to work with the image closely; it does not mean every casual shot will look better at that setting. Apple’s iPhone camera guidance applies to specific models and capture modes.

- Check the mode’s limits before relying on high resolution: a phone may restrict it by lens, zoom, flash, Night mode, or other capture conditions.
How much more storage does a higher-resolution photo use?
High-resolution files can be larger, but the difference depends on the phone, format, and mode. Apple gives these approximate examples for ProRAW on supported iPhones: a 12 MP file is about 25 MB, while a 48 MP file is about 75 MB. These are RAW-file examples, not a general estimate for JPEG or HEIF photos on all phones. Apple Support

If high-resolution files are crowding your phone, use the standard setting for routine pictures and reserve the larger mode for images that benefit from it. You can also move files to another storage location; before choosing a portable SSD or other accessory, verify that your phone supports the required connector and file-transfer method. Samsung lists external SSDs and memory cards as possible media-storage options, but compatibility and transfer steps depend on the device. On supported iPhone Pro models
Apple says iPhone 14 Pro and later Pro models can capture ProRAW at 12 MP or 48 MP. In that ProRAW workflow, 48 MP is available only on the main camera at 1×. Ultra Wide, Telephoto, Night mode, flash, and macro photos can only be saved at 12 MP. HEIF Max or RAW Max can reach up to 48 MP on compatible models, but resolution can change with zoom, Night mode, or flash. Follow Apple’s instructions for your model and software to locate and enable the relevant format and resolution controls.
On supported Samsung Galaxy devices
Samsung Australia’s guide describes opening Camera, choosing Camera Ratio, and selecting 3:4 (64MP High Resolution) on supported devices. The option is not universal: Samsung says camera settings and modes depend on the device’s camera specifications and software version, and its guide is for Australian variant devices. Check the Samsung camera guide and your phone’s own menus; your choices may differ.

Does cloud backup keep the original resolution?
Camera resolution and cloud backup quality are separate settings. Google Photos’ Original quality stores photos and videos at the resolution captured, unchanged, and counts them toward Google Account storage. Storage saver compresses photos and resizes images above 16 MP to 16 MP; it also counts toward account storage. Google documents exceptions where some files may not be compressed. The Express option is region-dependent and resizes photos above 3 MP to 3 MP. Review the quality selected for your backups if preserving the captured resolution matters. Google describes a good-quality 16 MP print as up to 24 × 16 inches. This is Google’s guidance, not a guarantee for every printer, image, or viewing distance; it also concerns the stored backup copy when Storage saver resizes a photo. Google Photos quality settings
