Start with your desk, your usual seated viewing distance, and what you do on screen—not a supposedly perfect diagonal. A 27-inch QHD monitor is a flexible mixed-use starting point; 24-inch 1080p, 32-inch 4K, and ultrawide displays can be better fits when space, sharpness, or workflow points elsewhere.

What monitor size actually measures

A monitor’s advertised size is the length of its diagonal, not its width. Two displays with the same diagonal can have different widths and heights if their aspect ratios differ. Before buying, check the manufacturer’s actual dimensions, including the stand footprint, and make sure the screen fits alongside your keyboard and other desk equipment.

Diagonal alone also does not tell you how sharp a display will look. Resolution is the number of pixels across and down the screen; pixel density, commonly expressed as pixels per inch (PPI), depends on both resolution and physical size. At the same resolution, a larger panel has lower pixel density. Viewing distance and eyesight influence how noticeable that difference is. Intel explains PPI and the role of viewing distance in perceived detail in its PPI guide.

Which size and resolution should you shortlist?

These combinations are practical examples drawn from manufacturer guidance, not guarantees or formal standards. The right choice still depends on viewing distance, text scaling, and your tasks.

Size and resolution May suit Check before choosing
Around 24 inches, 1080p A compact desk or setup where a smaller screen footprint matters. Whether text is comfortable to read and the screen has enough room for your windows.
Around 27 inches, QHD (1440p) A flexible mix of gaming and everyday productivity. Viewing distance, scaling, and whether the screen feels too large for your field of view.
Around 27 inches, 4K People who want a higher pixel count for text or imagery on a mid-sized screen. Whether you prefer the resulting interface size or need display scaling.
Around 32 inches, 4K More screen area for immersive gaming or creative tasks. Desk depth, comfortable viewing distance, and whether you can see screen edges without excessive head movement.
34 inches and above, ultrawide Wide timelines, spreadsheets, or side-by-side windows. Actual width, aspect ratio, task compatibility, and desk space.

ASUS presents these size-and-resolution pairings as buying guidance: its monitor buying guide describes 24-inch 1080p as a compact option, 27-inch 1440p as a middle ground, and 32-inch 4K as a larger option for immersive gaming and creative work. LG’s monitor buying guide also highlights factors beyond size, including panel type, refresh rate, response time, connectivity, and ergonomics.

How to check whether a monitor fits your desk and viewing distance

Measure the space the screen and stand will occupy, then sit in your normal position and estimate the distance from your eyes to the display. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) gives 20–40 inches (50–100 cm) as a generally preferred workstation viewing distance. This is broad workstation guidance, not a size-specific rule for every person or task. See OSHA’s monitor guidance.

  1. Check the physical footprint. Compare the display’s published width, height, and stand dimensions with your available desk space; do not rely on diagonal size alone.
  2. Check your normal viewing position. OSHA’s general preferred range is 20–40 inches (50–100 cm) from your eyes to the screen. Treat comfort and legibility as practical checks rather than trying to force your setup to fit a number.
  3. Position the display for a neutral posture. Place it directly in front of you, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. Choose a distance at which text is readable while your head and torso remain upright and your back is supported.
  4. Recheck the fit while working. If you need to lean forward, repeatedly turn your head, or sit uncomfortably close to read, reconsider the display size, layout, or text scaling. Smaller monitors may require larger text.

Which screen arrangement fits your work?

Arrangement Potential advantage What to weigh
24-inch 16:9 Compact footprint for a desk with limited space. Resolution, readable text, and room for your intended windows.
27-inch 16:9 A versatile size category with both QHD and 4K options. Viewing distance, resolution, scaling, and how much of your field of view it occupies.
32-inch 16:9 More physical display area. Desk depth, comfortable eye movement to the edges, and text scaling.
Ultrawide A broad workspace for timelines or multiple windows, without the center bezel of two separate displays. Width, aspect ratio, whether your tasks support the format, and whether separate monitors would organize work better.
Two monitors Physical separation of tasks and independent screen placement. Total desk space, bezels, and alignment.

Size alone does not ensure a faster gaming experience, better image quality, or higher productivity. For gaming, compare relevant performance features as well as dimensions; for office or creative work, consider whether the layout gives you usable space for the applications you actually run. Aspect ratio matters, too: a wide monitor occupies more horizontal desk space than a conventional 16:9 screen of the same diagonal.

A practical decision checklist

  • Desk: Does the screen and stand fit without crowding your other equipment?
  • Distance and posture: Can you read comfortably from your normal seated position while keeping your head and torso upright?
  • Detail: Does the resolution suit the panel size and the text or imagery you work with?
  • Workflow: Would a standard screen, ultrawide, or two displays better support your tasks?
  • Whole-monitor features: Compare panel type, refresh rate, response time, connectivity, and ergonomic adjustments where they matter to your use.
  • Budget: Compare the complete monitor and setup you need, rather than paying for a larger diagonal that does not solve a real constraint.
