Check the system label on your tool first: M12 batteries fit M12 tools and chargers, M18 batteries fit M18 tools and chargers, and MX FUEL is a separate equipment system. Once you have matched the platform, choose a pack size for the balance of weight and runtime you need, then choose a charger for your platform and how many batteries you want to charge at once.
Match the battery to the tool’s platform
Look for M12, M18, or MX FUEL on the tool and buy a battery with the same system label. These are separate Milwaukee battery systems, not interchangeable voltage options. Milwaukee lists M12 as 12 volts, M18 as 18 volts, and MX FUEL as 72 volts; its battery-selection guide says batteries do not cross between systems.
Within a platform, compatibility is broad: Milwaukee says all M18 batteries work with M18 tools and chargers, and all M12 batteries work with M12 tools and chargers. Its M18 FAQ puts it plainly: “All M18™ Batteries are compatible with M18™ tools & chargers.” Use genuine Milwaukee batteries with Milwaukee chargers; Milwaukee advises against third-party batteries or chargers.

Choose a pack size for the job
After platform fit, consider how much pack size and weight matter compared with runtime. Milwaukee describes its M18 pack tiers this way:

- Single unit simplicity for quick charge of all M12 and M18 battery packs.
- Sequential charging: automatically charges the second inserted pack once the first pack is fully charged.

These are Milwaukee’s general tier descriptions, not a universal performance ranking for every tool or task. Check the exact battery and tool specifications when weight, runtime, or output is critical.
Milwaukee states that M18 HIGH OUTPUT batteries have 50% more power and run 50% cooler than standard M18 REDLITHIUM batteries. It makes a separate M12 comparison: M12 HIGH OUTPUT batteries have 25% more power and run 25% cooler than standard M12 REDLITHIUM batteries. Choose a charger by platform and charging workload
If you own only one system, choose a charger explicitly compatible with that system. If you own both M12 and M18 tools, Milwaukee’s M18 & M12 Rapid Charger is a dual-platform option. Milwaukee says it accepts all M12 and M18 batteries and charges packs up to 40% faster than its compared baseline. - User Guide:When installing the battery, align it with the slot and apply moderate pressure until you hear a click, indicating it is securely in place. After installation, gently pull the battery to verify it is locked. Clean the contacts regularly and use compatible batteries to ensure proper operation.

These charger features are listed by Milwaukee in its M18 battery and charger FAQ. A multi-bay charger is useful when your charging workload warrants it, but is not a requirement for every home user.
Manufacturer-published M18 Super Charger time examples
Milwaukee reports these room-temperature test examples for its M18 Super Charger: an M18 REDLITHIUM FORGE XC6.0 reaches 80% in 15 minutes and full charge in 25 minutes; an M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT HD12.0 takes 60 minutes to full charge; an M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT XC8.0 takes 45 minutes; and an M18 REDLITHIUM XC5.0 takes 60 minutes to full charge. Milwaukee’s page, accessed in 2026, says actual results may vary and charging depends on the battery pack, charger, and surrounding conditions; these figures are not guaranteed times for every environment. A quick buying checklist
- Read the platform label on the tool and match it exactly: M12, M18, or MX FUEL.
- Choose a CP, XC, or HD pack tier according to Milwaukee’s size and runtime guidance, then check the exact pack’s specifications for your tool.
- Pick a charger with the right platform coverage; do not assume an M18-only charger accepts M12 packs.
- For more than one battery, distinguish simultaneous charging from a sequential charger.
- Check the product manual for handling guidance and battery-specific warranty information.
