Start with the age marking on the LEGO box or product listing, then match the set’s theme and build to the child’s interests and experience. Compare the piece count and listed features before choosing; if you are still unsure, use LEGO’s gift finder or let the recipient pick with a gift card.
1. Use the age marking as your first filter
LEGO organizes sets into age categories to help shoppers narrow a broad selection. Its US browsing categories currently include 1.5+, 4+, 6+, 9+, 13+ and 18+; the sets available in each category change over time. Start with the category that includes the child’s age, then check the marking on the individual set’s box or listing. You can browse LEGO’s 6+ category and 9+ category as examples.
The age mark is a guide to intended suitability, not a promise that every child of that age will have the same building skills or interests. LEGO says its markings help shoppers find sets suited to a child’s age, skills, experience level and development in its LEGO Friends FAQ. If a child is new to building, a smaller or simpler option within the appropriate age-marked range may be a more comfortable starting point; that is a practical choice, not a guarantee about how the child will find it.
2. Start with what the child likes
A theme connected to a genuine interest gives you a more useful shortlist than assumptions based on gender. LEGO’s gift pages cover interests and subjects such as animals, vehicles, sports, dollhouses, gaming and STEM, alongside themes including City, Creator 3in1, NINJAGO, Friends, DREAMZzz and Technic. Think about what the child already chooses to play with, watch, read about or build. If they enjoy storytelling, look for a set whose listed features support pretend play. A child drawn to vehicles, animals or STEM subjects may prefer a set built around one of those interests. Treat the theme as a starting point, not a promise about what a set does: check the actual listing for its functions and accessories.
3. Compare the build and the play
Once you have a few age-appropriate candidates, compare their product details rather than choosing by theme name alone. LEGO notes that details such as piece count and features vary by set; check the box or individual listing for the information available.

- Age marking: Does the set’s marked age range fit the child?
- Experience: Is the build likely to be a comfortable challenge for their current building experience?
- Piece count and build scope: How large or involved does the build appear compared with the child’s past projects?
- Functions and accessories: What does the listing say the set includes or can do?
- Play or display: Does its subject and listed features suit how the child likes to use completed builds?
These are comparison questions, not a scoring system. A higher piece count is not automatically a better fit: consider it alongside the age mark, the child’s experience and whether they want a longer build, a particular play feature or a model to display.
4. Check current price and availability
Prices, stock and the assortment of sets can change. Check the retailer’s current listing before settling on a specific set, especially if you are comparing candidates or shopping to a budget. Do not rely on an old price or assume a set is still available just because it appears in a gift category.

5. Let the child choose if you are unsure
If you do not know the child’s current favorite theme—or want to avoid choosing a set they already own—LEGO’s gift guidance points to its gift finder and gift cards. LEGO says, “You can also send a gift card and let them pick out whatever they want on LEGO.com or in a LEGO Store!” A gift card or a choice between a few suitable candidates leaves the final preference to the recipient.
