Choose the Dawn of War IV faction whose decisions sound most satisfying to you—not one presumed to be universally strongest. Orks lean into aggressive numbers and multiple strongholds; Adeptus Mechanicus build a network and develop ranged power; Necrons rely on resilience, territory-linked bonuses, and recovery; and Space Marines field elite troops that can be upgraded, reinforced, and repositioned. These are preference matches based on developer-described mechanics, not hands-on testing or a post-launch ranking.

Which Dawn of War IV faction should you play?

Start with the kind of RTS decisions you enjoy. The game’s announced systems include base building, capturing and upgrading resource points, squad weapons and abilities, cover, garrison buildings, and unit veterancy. Those systems make army size, map coverage, infrastructure, positioning, and reinforcement useful ways to compare the four factions.

Faction Developer-described approach May suit players who… Tradeoff to keep in mind
Orks Press aggressively with numbers, expand through multiple bases or strongholds, and use Waaagh! Banners and free Stratagems. Like producing and directing many units, expanding across the map, and keeping pressure on opponents. Individual units—especially ranged units—are not described as their strength, and Ork buildings are relatively easy to destroy. Aggression can leave openings for opponents to exploit.
Adeptus Mechanicus Establish and extend a Noosphere Network to resource points, then use Noosphere levels for research and upgrades. Their guidance highlights strong firing lines and a mix of cheap units and powerful late-game options. Enjoy infrastructure, upgrading, ranged positioning, and planning around network development. Network setup and protecting ranged units are part of the described approach; the available guidance does not establish a difficulty ranking.
Necrons Lean on resilience in prolonged engagements, recover losses with Resurrection Galleries, and advance the Power Matrix for bonuses. Mid- and late-game translocation can help offset slow movement. Prefer durable forces, deliberate map progression, and timing positional movement. Slow movement and vulnerability outside the Power Matrix are stated weaknesses. Resilience does not make the army invulnerable.
Space Marines Use elite fighters, upgrades, on-field reinforcement, fortifications, reserves, and Thunderhawk Relay redeployment. Want fewer, individually capable units and options to reinforce or reposition them. The publisher describes Space Marine units as expensive and resource hungry; elite forces can also be stretched across multiple engagements.

The mechanics and tradeoffs in this table come from Deep Silver’s faction guide. The “may suit” descriptions are play-style interpretations, not claims from independent gameplay testing.

How to choose based on the decisions you enjoy

Choose Orks if you want to keep expanding and applying pressure

The Ork approach puts emphasis on numbers, aggression, and multiple strongholds. That may appeal if you enjoy directing a broad force and making opponents respond to pressure in more than one place. The risk is that aggression can become reckless: the publisher’s own counter-guidance points to punishing advances, while relatively vulnerable buildings can make expansion costly if left exposed.

Choose Adeptus Mechanicus if network development and firing lines appeal

The Noosphere Network gives the faction a development plan tied to map resources: establish it, extend it, then use its levels for research and upgrades. If you like setting up infrastructure and protecting ranged units as you improve your force, that pattern may fit. The published description does not establish how forgiving the faction is for beginners.

Choose Necrons if you like durable armies and deliberate positioning

Necron resilience, Resurrection Galleries, and Power Matrix bonuses point toward sustaining a force through longer engagements while advancing across the map. Translocation is described as a way to mitigate slow movement later in a match, rather than proof that mobility is never a concern. Their position outside the Power Matrix can be exploited.

Choose Space Marines if you prefer elite units and reinforcement options

Space Marines emphasize individually capable fighters, upgrades, and ways to reinforce or redeploy forces. That can suit players who enjoy making each squad count and responding to changing engagements. Their cost and resource demands mean that keeping elite troops active in several places at once may strain your army.

How multiplayer objectives affect your choice

Mode Objective What to consider
Annihilation Destroy the enemy headquarters and defend your own. If you most enjoy attacking or protecting bases, consider how each faction’s described army and stronghold approach fits that focus.
Domination Hold Strategic Positions to earn Victory Points. Think about how you want to capture, reinforce, and hold locations around the map.
Maelstrom Secure dynamically appearing objectives to earn Victory Points. Consider how comfortable you are shifting attention as objectives change and how your preferred faction handles map coverage or repositioning.

Mode objectives are described in the Dawn of War IV developer posts on Steam. They offer another way to think about your preferences, but they do not establish a strongest faction for any mode. The developers say they want faction identity to remain authentic while pursuing fair play, and anticipate balance work informed by data and feedback after launch.

Should the campaign or story decide it?

Yes. Deep Silver says each of the four factions has a distinct campaign that contributes to one overarching story. KING Art Games’ announcement describes four full single-player or co-op campaigns, one per faction. If a faction’s story interests you more than its multiplayer profile, that is a sound reason to choose it; campaign appeal does not require you to be focused on competitive play.

Deep Silver / PLAION’s 2026 game page lists 70+ campaign missions. KING Art Games’ August 2025 announcement described over 110 units and buildings; treat that as an announcement-era count, not a verified final release total.

Is one faction best for beginners?

The official material available does not give a definitive easiest-faction ranking. It describes distinct plans and weaknesses, but does not establish comparative difficulty through player testing. If you are new to the game, use the faction whose core decisions sound most intuitive to you—such as expanding with Orks, building a Mechanicus network, advancing Necron territory, or reinforcing Space Marine elites—rather than treating any one as officially beginner-friendly.

Release date and platform

As of October 4, 2026, Deep Silver’s current FAQ lists December 3, 2026 as the release date and Steam for Windows PC as the platform. The FAQ says the campaign supports solo or co-op play and that multiplayer modes are planned for launch. These are pre-release details and may change; check the official Dawn of War IV page and FAQ for the latest information.
