For a portable evaporative cooler, start with its airflow rating in CFM and the manufacturer’s stated room coverage, then check whether your climate and room ventilation suit evaporative cooling. A square-foot claim is only a first filter: heat, humidity, room layout and airflow all affect results. For a whole-home system, size by conditioned air volume and climate-appropriate air changes per hour—not by a portable cooler’s coverage chart.

What capacity means for an air cooler

For a portable evaporative cooler, capacity is most usefully compared by airflow: cubic feet per minute (CFM), or the equivalent cubic metres per hour (m³/h). Airflow gives you a practical starting point for comparing units. A manufacturer’s room-area figure can help narrow choices, but it is an estimate tied to the maker’s assumptions, not a guaranteed cooling result.

Honeywell’s air-cooler FAQ gives illustrative examples of about 50 sq. ft. for a 200-CFM spot cooler and about 500 sq. ft. for a 2,000-CFM cooler. Honeywell cautions that actual performance depends on heat and humidity. Do not extrapolate those examples into a universal square-feet-per-CFM formula.

How to size a portable cooler for a room

  1. Measure the space. Record the floor area and ceiling height. Note whether direct sun heats the room and whether it opens into other spaces, since the cooler may be dealing with more than the measured floor area.
  2. Compare airflow and stated coverage. Check the cooler’s CFM or m³/h rating and the manufacturer’s room-area claim. Treat coverage as a screening estimate rather than a promise.
  3. Check climate and ventilation before deciding. Evaporative cooling is less effective when the air is humid, and a direct cooler needs a route for moist air to leave. A unit that appears large enough on paper can still disappoint in an unsuitable room.
  4. Compare practical features once the unit fits. Consider noise, refill frequency, footprint, portability, fan speeds, maintenance access and whether the product is rated for indoor, outdoor or covered-patio use.

Does your climate and room suit evaporative cooling?

A direct evaporative cooler lowers air temperature by evaporating water into the air; in doing so, it adds moisture. Its cooling potential depends partly on the difference between dry-bulb temperature (the ordinary air temperature) and wet-bulb temperature (which reflects humidity). The larger that gap, the more potential there is for evaporative cooling. At 100% relative humidity, the temperatures are equal, so there is no wet-bulb depression to support cooling through evaporation.

The entire water tank lifts out for easy sink cleaning, while the removable cooling pad lifts out for easy rinsing. Regular maintenance helps keep airflow fresh for consistent cooling performance over time

Honeywell says its portable evaporative coolers work best at about 60% relative humidity or lower; De’Longhi describes them as suitable for areas where humidity does not reach 50–60%. These are manufacturers’ practical guidelines, not a universal cutoff. Local conditions and the room’s use still matter. If your space is often humid, a portable air conditioner may be a more suitable option.

Plan for cross-ventilation when using a direct evaporative cooler. Honeywell advises opening a window or door so excess humidity can escape; its TC30PEU product page also recommends an open window or door for indoor use. Do not assume a cooler will perform effectively in a sealed room.

How to size a whole-home evaporative system

Whole-home systems use a different sizing approach from portable room coolers. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Building America Solution Center recommends estimating conditioned air volume and applying an air-changes-per-hour (ACH) target appropriate to regional design conditions. Manufacturers commonly suggest approximately 20–40 ACH for evaporative cooling, depending on location and outdoor conditions.

  1. Calculate conditioned volume: floor area in sq. ft. × average ceiling height in ft. = cubic feet.
  2. Select a target ACH appropriate to the location and outdoor conditions.
  3. Calculate airflow: required CFM = (conditioned volume in cubic feet × target ACH) ÷ 60.

For example, PNNL’s guide uses a 2,000-sq.-ft. home with 8-ft. ceilings near Salt Lake City and a 20-ACH target: (2,000 × 8 × 20) ÷ 60 = 5,333 CFM. That is a whole-home calculation, not a portable room-cooler chart. PNNL notes that sizing evaporative cooling is not an exact science; use the appropriate local design conditions when choosing an engineered system.

What to compare when choosing between models

Factor How to use it
Airflow rating Compare CFM or m³/h, and check that the rating basis is consistent across the models you are considering.
Advertised room coverage Use the manufacturer’s stated area as an initial filter, with its climate and operating qualifications in mind.
Room volume and layout Consider ceiling height, adjoining open areas and airflow path—not just floor area.
Humidity and ventilation Assess local humidity and whether a window or door can provide cross-ventilation.
Water tank Use tank capacity to estimate refill convenience, not cooling output. Honeywell says tank size mainly affects refill frequency and the cooler’s physical size.
Everyday fit Compare noise, energy use, footprint, mobility, maintenance and replacement cooling media.
Intended location Check whether the model is rated for indoor use, outdoor use or a covered patio.

How to interpret a manufacturer’s coverage claim

Honeywell’s TC30PEU illustrates why coverage figures need context: its product page lists 700 CFM and coverage up to 426 sq. ft., but identifies the model as discontinued. Those numbers describe that manufacturer’s claim for a specific model; they are not a current buying recommendation or a general conversion rule.

Before choosing a current model, confirm its airflow rating, stated coverage and operating guidance on the manufacturer’s product page. A larger tank alone does not establish that a cooler can serve a larger room.
