Start with where and how you run, then compare Brooks’ neutral and GuideRails-supported options, cushioning, and fit. Ghost and Ghost Max are neutral road families; Adrenaline GTS and Glycerin GTS are Brooks’ supported options; Cascadia and Caldera are trail families. These categories are useful starting points—not a diagnosis based on foot shape or a guarantee of what will suit you.
Choose by surface and running goal first
For road running, narrow your choice by whether you want a neutral shoe or Brooks’ GuideRails support, then consider cushioning and distance. For trails, begin with a trail-specific family. If speed work or race day is the priority, compare Brooks’ lighter options.
| Running use | Brooks family to compare | Brooks’ stated positioning |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday road running | Ghost | Everyday neutral option described as reliable, soft, and smooth. Brooks UK shoe-selection guide |
| Neutral road running with a broad, protective platform | Ghost Max | Max cushioning and a broad base intended not to interfere with a neutral stride. Brooks Canada Ghost family guide |
| Road running with Brooks’ added support recommendation | Adrenaline GTS | GuideRails support; Brooks recommends the family for overpronation. Brooks US Ghost-versus-Adrenaline comparison |
| More cushioned supported road running | Glycerin GTS | Listed by Brooks among its GuideRails-supported choices for overpronation. Brooks UK overpronation collection |
| Soft neutral feel for longer road runs | Glycerin | Described by Brooks as especially soft; Brooks recommends Ghost or Glycerin for longer distances. Brooks UK shoe-selection guide |
| Trail running, including technical or varied terrain | Cascadia | Brooks lists the Cascadia 20 for trails, hiking, technical terrain, and varied surfaces; the product page specifies Vibram Megagrip traction and TrailAdapt. Brooks US Cascadia 20 product page |
| Plush cushioning for trail distance | Caldera | Described by Brooks as a distance-trail option with a plush feel and traction. Brooks UK shoe-selection guide |
| Faster road training or race day | Hyperion or Launch | Brooks names Hyperion for speed or race day; Launch is described as light, between a race flat and a standard trainer. Brooks UK collections page Brooks UK shoe-selection guide |
These family descriptions reflect Brooks’ own product guidance. They help you build a shortlist, but do not establish which model will work best for your individual stride or needs.
What “neutral” and GuideRails support mean
Neutral: Ghost and Ghost Max
Brooks positions Ghost and Ghost Max as neutral choices. The Ghost is its everyday neutral option; Ghost Max adds a broad, highly cushioned platform. Choose between them by comparing the feel and platform you want, not by assuming that one matches a particular arch shape.

GuideRails: Adrenaline GTS and Glycerin GTS
Brooks identifies Adrenaline GTS and Glycerin GTS as GuideRails-supported options, and associates the category with overpronation. Brooks explains GuideRails as allowing the body’s natural motion path while limiting excess motion. That is the brand’s product explanation, not an independent clinical assessment or an injury-prevention promise. Read the Brooks comparison of Ghost and Adrenaline for its description of the support system.
Do not choose from arch height alone
Brooks organizes shoes around categories such as neutral and support, but its product guidance does not establish that static arch height alone predicts which category a runner should choose. Treat “foot type” as a prompt to compare options and pay attention to fit and comfort, not as a reliable shoe prescription. If you need biomechanical or clinical advice, the product categories here cannot settle that question.
Compare cushioning with distance and preferred feel
Brooks recommends more cushioning for longer runs or marathon distances and points runners to Ghost or Glycerin; it describes Glycerin as especially soft. That guidance gives you a starting point, not a rule that every long-distance runner needs the same level of cushioning. Compare how the shoe feels for your intended use when possible.
For trails, prioritize trail-specific features
Road and trail use are different selection problems. Brooks lists Cascadia for trail protection, including technical and varied terrain; the current US Cascadia 20 page also names hiking and specifies Vibram Megagrip traction and TrailAdapt. For plush cushioning on trail distance, compare Caldera. Check the exact model listing for the generation and specifications available in your market.

Some Brooks models are offered in wide or extra-wide widths, but the available widths vary by model and country. For example, Brooks UK’s road-shoe listings show market-specific model and width options; listings and inventory can change. Check the local product page for the exact model, generation, size, and width you intend to buy rather than assuming that an option shown in another market is available to you.
Brooks recommends trying shoes at a local shop or using its Shoe Finder. If you can try the shortlisted models, compare how they feel in the width you need and for the activity you plan to do. Brooks UK road-shoe listings

A practical shortlist
- Identify your main surface: road, trail, or both. For trail use, compare Cascadia or Caldera rather than starting with a road family.
- For road running, compare categories: Ghost or Ghost Max for neutral options; Adrenaline GTS or Glycerin GTS for Brooks’ GuideRails-supported options.
- Match cushioning and pace to your goal: compare Ghost or Glycerin for longer road runs, and Hyperion or Launch for faster running or race day.
- Verify local fit options: check the current generation and width listing for your market, then try shoes on if feasible.
