Choose Assassin’s Creed Mirage if stealth, parkour, and planned assassinations are your priority; choose Odyssey for dialogue choices and a sprawling Greek RPG, Valhalla for Viking raids and settlement-building, Origins for Ancient Egypt exploration, or Shadows if you want to alternate between a stealth specialist and a combat-focused character. The series changes its balance of stealth, action, and RPG systems from game to game, so the best starting point depends on what you want to do.
Choose by the kind of play you want
| If you want… | Start with… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Stealth, parkour, investigations, and planned assassinations | Assassin’s Creed Mirage | Ubisoft presents it as a return to stealth-focused play, with gadgets, contracts, investigations, and a dense Baghdad setting. Its official page also notes a free Valley of Memory update and mission replay. Ubisoft’s Mirage page |
| The original series formula | Assassin’s Creed (2007) | Its core activities include stalking targets, climbing, blending into crowds, and sword fighting in the Crusades-era Holy Land. Expect older design and pacing than in newer entries. Ubisoft’s original game page |
| Dialogue choices, RPG progression, and a long Greek adventure | Assassin’s Creed Odyssey | Decisions shape events, and Ubisoft describes more than 30 hours of choice dialogue and multiple endings, alongside land exploration, large battles, and naval combat. Ubisoft’s Odyssey page |
| Viking raids, combat, settlement-building, and alliances | Assassin’s Creed Valhalla | Its central premise is establishing a home in ninth-century England through raids and alliances, with RPG mechanics and combat. Ubisoft’s Valhalla page |
| Ancient Egypt, exploration, quests, and weapon-based combat | Assassin’s Creed Origins | It pairs exploration across Egypt with story quests, varied weapons, a redesigned combat system, and the Discovery Tour educational mode. Ubisoft’s Origins page |
| A choice between stealth and direct combat | Assassin’s Creed Shadows | Play as Naoe, whose style centers on shinobi stealth, infiltration, tools, and parkour, or Yasuke, who is combat-oriented. Their skills, stats, progression, and gear differ. Ubisoft’s Shadows page |
These are fits based on Ubisoft’s descriptions, not hands-on rankings. For the least ambiguity, decide whether you want to avoid fights, build a character through RPG systems, or make combat the main attraction.
If stealth and assassination matter most
Pick Mirage for a modern stealth-forward entry
Mirage is the clearest fit among these choices if you want to scout a target, investigate, use tools and hiding places, and escape rather than win a prolonged open fight. Ubisoft describes Basim as vulnerable in direct combat and emphasizes stealth, parkour, scouting, and Baghdad’s urban environment.
Pick the original for the early template
The 2007 Assassin’s Creed is an option if you want to see the early formula: observe targets, climb, use crowds, and fight with historical weapons. Its older pacing and design make it a different experience from a modern stealth game.
#1 Best Overall
- BECOME A FEARSOME PIRATE- Strike fear in your foes as you board and sink enemy vessels as Edward Kenway, captain of the Jackdaw. Whether blending into crowds or leading daring assaults, switch between silent takedowns and fierce brawls as you effortlessly wield swords, pistols, and the Hidden Blade. With a cast of historical pirate legends at your side, defy empires amidst the age-old conflict opposing Assassins and Templars.
- A CLASSIC REBUILT FOR AN ENHANCED EXPERIENCE- Combat has been rebuilt for more dynamic encounters, emphasizing parries and takedowns, while stealth and parkour have been improved for smoother escapes and assassinations. Continuously upgrade the Jackdaw to face powerful enemy ships with enhanced naval mechanics featuring new alternate fire modes. Quality-of-life additions also address previous pain points, ensuring your experience is improved.
- THE CARIBBEAN LIKE NEVER BEFORE- Whether you’re sailing the open seas or journeying across untamed lands, discover a seamless open world built with the latest Anvil engine. Take in sweeping vistas as you brave stormy waters, dive into underwater shipwrecks, or push through dense tropical jungles. Enhanced by features such as Dolby Atmos and ray tracing, every scene feels more immersive, bringing the world’s beauty to life.
- EXPANDING EDWARD’S ADVENTURE- Building on top of the original story, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced introduces exclusive new content. Familiar faces will return, with new storylines dedicated to fan-favorite characters such as Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet. Unexpected allies will also cross your path, as three officers join you on your journey as part of the main narrative. More surprises await, such as new sea shanties, pets, a photo mode, and more.
Pick Shadows if you also want a combat option
Shadows lets you switch between Naoe’s stealth-oriented approach and Yasuke’s combat specialization. It suits players who want both approaches within one game rather than an entry built primarily around one of them.
If you want RPG choices, progression, or a large setting
Odyssey: choices and naval exploration
Odyssey is the strongest fit for a player who wants decisions to shape the story, multiple endings, and a long journey around Ancient Greece. Ubisoft’s “more than 30 hours” refers specifically to choice dialogue in its product description; it is not a general estimate of total playtime. The game also features land exploration, large battles, naval combat, and an optional Discovery Tour.

Origins is the earlier of these three RPG-era redesigns. It shifts attention from the compact-city emphasis of earlier entries to exploration across Egypt, quests, and weapon-and-loot combat. Its Discovery Tour presents Egypt through guided tours curated by historians and Egyptologists.

If you want combat to carry the experience
Shadows offers the clearest character-based contrast: Yasuke favors direct combat, while Naoe favors stealth. Valhalla foregrounds Viking fighting and raids, and Origins emphasizes varied weapons and a rebuilt combat system.
Stealth kills also work differently across the RPG-era games. Ubisoft’s stealth-history article explains that Origins and Odyssey moved away from guaranteed stealth kills, using stealth damage until upgrades; Valhalla includes a setting for instantly lethal Hidden Blade kills or a timing challenge; and Mirage was designed with stealth in mind. That describes differences in mechanics, not which game will feel best to you.
