For Apple’s current AirPods choices, start with fit: AirPods 5 have an open-ear design, AirPods Pro 3 use silicone tips, and AirPods Max 2 are over-ear headphones. Then compare price, noise control, battery claims, and which features work with your devices. The prices below are Apple’s US prices checked on October 4, 2026; prices and availability may differ elsewhere or change over time.
Compare the current AirPods choices
Apple’s US Store lists three current model families. Their different fits are the most useful first filter; the listed prices are not universal market prices.
| Model | Fit and key features | Apple US price checked October 4, 2026 | Best fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods 5 | Open-ear; standard USB-C charging case or Wireless Charging Case. Apple lists ANC for this model. | $129 with standard USB-C charging case; $149 with Wireless Charging Case | Listeners who prefer an open fit and want the lowest entry price among these choices. |
| AirPods Pro 3 | In-ear silicone tips in five sizes; ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, hearing-health functions, and workout heart-rate sensing. | $249 | Listeners who want an in-ear fit and Apple’s broadest set of listening and workout features in this comparison. |
| AirPods Max 2 | Over-ear headphones; Apple lists USB-C lossless and ultra-low-latency audio capability. | $549 | Listeners who prefer a headband and ear cups and value the listed USB-C audio capability. |
These are Apple US Store figures, not fixed prices for every retailer or country. Older AirPods generations may still appear in comparison pages and retailer results, so confirm the exact generation and included case before buying. See Apple’s AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2 store pages for current US listings.

AirPods 5: an open-ear fit
Choose AirPods 5 if you prefer earbuds that do not seal the ear canal. Apple lists ANC, but the open-ear shape is not the same as the seal created by silicone-tipped in-ear earbuds. If you need a close in-ear fit for commuting or noisy surroundings, consider whether that difference matters more than the open design.

AirPods Pro 3: silicone tips and noise control
Pro 3 comes with silicone tips in five sizes and includes ANC, Adaptive Audio, and Transparency. The sealed fit may suit listeners who prefer in-ear earbuds, but comfort and stability depend on the individual; specifications cannot predict how a particular person’s ears will respond. If possible, prioritize fit as well as the feature list.
AirPods Max 2: over-ear headphones
Max 2 is the choice for listeners who specifically want ear cups and a headband rather than earbuds. That form factor is a substantial difference from the other two models, so compare it on comfort and how you plan to carry and use headphones—not only on its feature list.

Match the choice to your devices
AirPods can pair with non-Apple devices as Bluetooth headphones, according to Apple’s compatibility comparison, but pairing does not guarantee the full Apple feature set. If you mainly use Android or Windows, confirm that the specific controls and services you care about are available for your setup before choosing based on them.

Apple-device owners should check requirements feature by feature. Some functions depend on compatible hardware and software, current firmware, particular operating-system versions, supported languages, or regional availability. Do not assume that Live Translation, Siri functions, hearing features, automatic switching, or personalized audio will work on every device, AirPods generation, or in every country. Apple’s comparison page provides the relevant feature notes.

- EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge. Or up to 10 hours in Transparency using the Hearing Aid feature.*
Consider workouts, hearing features, and noise control
Apple lists heart-rate sensing during workouts on AirPods Pro 3. Treat it as a product feature, not medical advice or a replacement for a dedicated health device. Pro 3 also includes hearing-health functions, but availability can depend on device and regional conditions; check Apple’s feature notes for your location and hardware.
For noise control, Pro 3’s silicone tips and ANC suit listeners seeking an in-ear seal and noise-reduction features. AirPods 5 also has ANC listed by Apple, but its open fit does not create the same seal. ANC and other specialized features matter less if you rarely listen in noisy places or prefer to remain more aware of surrounding sound.
Rank #4
- Automatically on, automatically connected
- Easy setup for all your Apple devices
- Quick access to Siri by saying “Hey Siri”
- Double-tap to play or skip forward
- New Apple H1 headphone chip delivers faster wireless connection to your devices
Weigh battery claims and charging needs
Apple lists up to 8 hours of listening on one charge for AirPods Pro 3 with ANC on, and up to 20 hours of battery life on one charge for AirPods Max 2 with ANC on. These are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results or guaranteed everyday runtimes. Apple says, “Battery life depends on device settings, environment, usage, and many other factors.” See its AirPods comparison page for the claim and qualification.
If you often listen away from a charger, compare the stated single-charge durations with your typical sessions, while accounting for the very different in-ear and over-ear designs. For AirPods 5, the Wireless Charging Case configuration is listed at $149 in Apple’s US Store as checked October 4, 2026, versus $129 for the standard USB-C charging case. Apple describes wireless charging as a case option; choose it if that charging method fits your setup.
Best Value
- Active Noise Cancellation blocks outside noise, so you can immerse yourself in music
- Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
- Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
- Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears
- Three sizes of soft, tapered silicone tips for a customizable fit
Apple says USB-C cables are not included with AirPods 5 or AirPods Pro 3. If you do not already have a compatible cable, account for obtaining one when planning how you will charge them.
When USB-C audio matters
Apple lists lossless and ultra-low-latency audio capability for AirPods Max 2 when used with USB-C and compatible content. Do not treat those modes as ordinary Bluetooth playback; the stated capability has both a connection and content condition. If you do not specifically need that wired USB-C use, the over-ear fit and higher listed price may be more relevant to your decision.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path
- Choose the fit first. Open-ear points to AirPods 5, silicone-tipped in-ear to AirPods Pro 3, and over-ear to AirPods Max 2.
- Set a US price ceiling, if applicable. Apple’s prices checked October 4, 2026 were $129 or $149 for AirPods 5 depending on case, $249 for Pro 3, and $549 for Max 2. Check local pricing if you are outside the US.
- Identify the feature you will actually use. Consider ANC, Adaptive Audio or Transparency, workout heart-rate sensing, hearing functions, wireless case charging, or USB-C audio rather than buying on a feature name alone.
- Check device and regional compatibility. Use Apple’s feature notes to confirm OS, firmware, hardware, language, and country requirements for the specific function you want.
- Verify the exact listing. Confirm model generation and case configuration, especially if shopping retailer listings that may include older AirPods.
