Start with the exercises you plan to train
Write down the movements you expect to do at home and the loads you can currently handle with controlled technique. Use those needs to guide your choice rather than buying the largest set available or relying on a broad fitness label. This is a practical way to apply the American College of Sports Medicine’s free-weight guidance; it is not a tested formula for choosing a particular capacity.
Check that the set can handle both lighter movements and the heavier exercises in your routine. A set with a high maximum is not useful if its minimum setting is too heavy for movements where you need less load.
Compare the full range and the increments
Check the exact model’s lightest selectable weight, maximum weight per hand, and every available step between them. A published maximum alone does not tell you whether the set offers useful options across the range you need.

There is no universally established best increment size in the guidance cited here. Compare the actual steps against the exercises you intend to perform rather than treating a particular increment or percentage as a scientific rule.
Allow for progression without buying capacity you may not use
Consider whether the maximum leaves room for the training you realistically expect to do. Lifemaxx lists adjustable dumbbells in 24 kg, 32 kg, and 40 kg options, and says its 32 kg or 40 kg options may suit heavier training or provide more room for progression. Those are manufacturer-listed capacities and product guidance, not universal recommendations for buyers: compare the listed adjustable dumbbell weight ranges.

ACSM’s 2026 update gives 30–70% of one-repetition maximum as a load range for power training, where the lifting phase should be performed quickly. That figure applies to this specific training method; it is not a shopping range for adjustable dumbbells or a general target for every exercise.
Check adjustment, handling, and storage
Before choosing a model, review its own instructions for changing weights and securing the plates or selector. The guidance cited here does not establish that a particular adjustment or locking mechanism is better, so assess how the exact model is operated rather than assuming mechanisms are interchangeable.

- Technique and handling: ACSM advises moving weights in a controlled manner, lowering them slowly, and taking joints through a full range of motion. Its free-weight guidance also covers picking up and putting down weights, and recommends spotters for heavy lifts or unfamiliar exercises.
- Space: Confirm where the set will be kept and whether you have room to adjust and use it safely. A rack may help with storage, but the cited guidance does not recommend a specific rack.
- Durability and upkeep: Consider the product’s durability, warranty, and maintenance information as part of the decision; ACSM’s consumer guidance discusses these equipment factors.
What home training guidance does—and does not—tell you
ACSM’s 2026 resistance-training update says, “Traditional gym settings are not needed to see results.” It notes that home-based routines and tools such as bands and bodyweight can support strength, hypertrophy, and physical-function benefits. That supports training outside a commercial gym, but it does not prescribe an adjustable-dumbbell capacity.
The sources cited here do not establish a population-wide ideal weight range, a winning adjustment mechanism, or a universal price-to-capacity tradeoff. For a specific set, the useful comparison is its minimum and maximum per hand, selectable steps, operating instructions, storage needs, and available durability and maintenance details.
