Choose a water filter based on the contaminants in your water—not a broad claim that it “purifies” everything. Check your local water-quality report, then verify that the exact filter model is currently certified for the specific contaminant you want to reduce. The available evidence does not establish the six products or test results named in the original title, so this guide explains how to choose a filter without presenting unverified models as lab-tested winners.
What’s the best water filter for your home?
The best choice is the filter whose verified contaminant-reduction claims match your water and whose format, installation, and replacement schedule suit your household. Start by finding out what is in your water; then check the precise certification and claim for a candidate model. NSF cautions that “not all filters can reduce all contaminants.”
Start with a water-quality report
If your home is served by a public water system, look for its Consumer Confidence Report or water-quality report. Your utility can tell you where to find it. If a report is unavailable—or you rely on a private well—consider independent water testing. NSF recommends using water information to identify which contaminants, if any, you need to address. Match the claim to the contaminant
A standard number by itself is not a promise that a filter reduces every contaminant covered by that standard. Manufacturers select the reduction claims they make, so check the exact product and contaminant claim, and verify current certification with the certifier. NSF says the contaminants a filter removes vary from product to product.

Which water filter removes lead or PFAS?
Check the specific contaminant designation rather than relying on a general description such as “carbon filter” or “certified.” The relevant standards and claims differ by contaminant and, for lead, by whether it is dissolved or particulate.
Lead: look for the right form of reduction
The U.S. EPA’s August 2025 guide distinguishes dissolved lead from lead particles: NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction includes dissolved lead, while NSF/ANSI 42 Class 1 covers particulate reduction. Read the product’s current listing and claim to confirm what it is certified to reduce; do not assume a claim for one form covers the other. PFAS: check for the PFAS designation
NSF says filters certified to NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58 with a PFAS designation help reduce PFAS. A product that lists only one of those standards, without the PFAS designation, should not be treated as certified for PFAS reduction on that basis alone. Confirm the current listing for the exact model.
Should you choose a pitcher, faucet, under-sink, or refrigerator filter?
These formats differ in how filtered water is supplied and what installation or upkeep they require. EPA notes that pitchers require refilling, while faucet-mounted, under-sink, and refrigerator filters can provide filtered water on demand; fit and installation depend on the model and your plumbing or appliance.

Follow the filter manufacturer’s replacement instructions. Cartridge life varies with the model, how much water you use, and water quality, so a category estimate is not a substitute for the model’s schedule.

These are broad estimates in the EPA guide published in August 2025; actual life varies by model, use, and water quality. Budget for replacement cartridges as well as the initial device cost, and replace cartridges as directed. EPA’s guide lists average product-category prices from February 2024; those historical figures are not current 2026 price quotes.
How to evaluate a specific filter before buying
- Identify the water concern. Review your utility’s water report or arrange appropriate independent testing, especially if you use a private well.
- Find the exact model’s certification. Check the certifier’s current listing, not just the product category, packaging, or a general standard number.
- Confirm the contaminant claim. Make sure the listing covers the contaminant and, where relevant, the form you want reduced.
- Check fit and access. Confirm faucet, plumbing, cabinet, or refrigerator compatibility and consider whether you want to refill a pitcher or have filtered water on demand.
- Compare upkeep and total cost. Check the replacement schedule, cartridge availability, and recurring cartridge expense before choosing.
Consumer Reports describes its own evaluations of pitchers and other filters as including measures such as filtration time, taste and odor, flow rate, and clogging. Those are Consumer Reports methods; they do not establish the test procedure or results of another publication’s article.
