The best smart lock depends first on your door: a replacement deadbolt, a retrofit that turns an existing deadbolt, and a lock for a European cylinder or multipoint door are not interchangeable. After confirming physical fit, choose the entry methods you will use, check whether your smart-home setup needs a hub or Thread border router, and compare the full installed system—not just the lock.
Start with your door and existing lock
Smart locks sold in the United States generally fall into two physical formats. A replacement deadbolt takes the place of the existing deadbolt hardware. A retrofit unit mounts on the inside and operates a compatible existing deadbolt, potentially leaving its exterior key cylinder in place. European cylinder and multipoint-door products use different hardware and should not be assumed to fit a North American deadbolt.
Before choosing a model, check the manufacturer’s compatibility guide and measure the door and lock hardware it specifies. For retrofit locks, verify the exact thumbturn shape and interior clearance, and whether the existing key remains usable from outside. For replacement locks, confirm the door preparation, thickness, backset, strike-plate fit, and any keyed-backup requirements. MatterCatalog’s 2026 guide to Matter smart locks also cautions that products within a category can have different fit requirements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Replacement deadbolt: Replaces the existing deadbolt; check door preparation, dimensions, and the selected package.
- Retrofit lock: Operates a compatible deadbolt from inside; check thumbturn fit, clearance, key operation, and any required bridge or hub.
- European cylinder or multipoint lock: Requires a product designed for that door and lock format; do not rely on a North American deadbolt compatibility claim.
- Lock with camera or visitor features: Treat the camera, app, and physical fit as part of the same system decision.
If your door is unusual, modified, or outside a manufacturer’s stated measurements, ask a qualified installer or locksmith to assess it before ordering.

Choose access methods around how people enter
Entry features solve different problems. A keypad makes it straightforward to issue codes to guests or service workers; a physical key can provide an independent way in if electronics or connectivity fail. Phone and wallet credentials can reduce the need to carry a key, while fingerprint readers avoid entering a code. Hands-free proximity features can be convenient, but depend on supported devices and the lock’s particular setup.
- Guest access: Look for code creation and management in the lock’s app, and check how many codes it supports if that matters to your household.
- Phone or wallet access: Confirm the exact lock, phone or watch, wallet, and smart-home platform combination. Support can vary by model and may change with certification or software updates.
- Fingerprint access: Check who can enroll fingerprints and how credentials are managed, as well as whether the lock offers another dependable entry method.
- Hands-free unlocking: Verify supported devices and required home hardware; do not assume a general Matter claim includes proximity unlocking.
- Backup entry: Decide whether you want a mechanical key, keypad, or another independent method, and understand what happens if the battery is depleted.
For example, Aqara lists the U400 with fingerprint, keypad/password, app and voice control, mechanical key, NFC card, and selected wallet-based options. Its UWB approach unlocking is device-specific: Aqara identifies supported iPhone and Apple Watch models and requires a Thread-enabled Apple home hub. These are manufacturer-stated features, so verify current supported-device details on Aqara’s U400 product page before buying.

Matter compatibility does not mean every lock feature works identically in every ecosystem. A Matter-over-Thread lock needs compatible Thread and Matter infrastructure for the selected platform. Some functions may still depend on the manufacturer’s app, a particular phone or wallet, or a separate bridge. Remote access can also have different requirements from local control.

- Does the selected model use Matter over Thread, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a vendor bridge?
- Does your home already have the required compatible controller or Thread border router?
- Is a bridge, hub, keypad, or other accessory included in the specific package you are considering?
- Which features work in your preferred app, and which require the manufacturer’s app or another service?
- Do you need remote access, and what hardware or account setup enables it?
Compare the price of the lock plus the accessories needed for your chosen setup. Packages and retailer bundles can differ, so confirm the model identifier and box contents rather than relying on a product-family name. MatterCatalog’s 2026 guide notes that one U400 DL-D06E package has the lock and rechargeable battery but not an M100 hub; Aqara lists separate packages with different included accessories. Check the live listing and the manufacturer’s current package details before ordering.

MatterCatalog’s classifications are a useful starting point, not a substitute for manufacturer specifications. Tom’s Guide describes a hands-on process that includes installation, daily use, guest access, and smart-home interaction; its picks reflect that publication’s evaluations. Security.org’s 2026 guide similarly frames recommendations around buyer needs and access methods. Neither publication’s selection makes a model best for every door or ecosystem.

Aqara Smart Lock U400
Aqara says the U400 supports single-cylinder deadbolts, Matter over Thread, and a Thread-enabled Matter controller for the selected ecosystem. The company warns that other door dimensions may need modification and directs installers to use the supplied strike plate. Aqara publishes battery life of up to six months per charge, capacity for up to 50 fingerprints, and fingerprint recognition accuracy up to 98.6%. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Aqara also lists BHMA certification and an IP65 rating for the outer panel; those labels are not a like-for-like comparison with another lock’s physical-security performance, and the stated IP rating applies to the outer panel.

Schlage Sense Pro
Tom’s Guide reports that the Sense Pro went on sale in June 2026 for $399 and lists keypad/app access, Bluetooth, Matter over Thread, Aliro, Wi-Fi, 250 codes, ANSI Grade 2, and four AA batteries. Its reviewer says they tested the lock on their door for more than two months. The review reported UWB unlocking with iPhones at that time, while Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet Aliro support were expected after certification; it did not provide a rollout date. Treat wallet availability as time-sensitive and confirm it before purchase in Tom’s Guide’s Sense Pro review. The reported $399 is the review-era launch price, not a current price guarantee.
Compare the details that affect ownership
Once a lock fits and works with your chosen platform, compare the practical details that shape daily use and the complete cost:
- Installation: Check whether the lock replaces hardware or mounts over it, whether the supplied strike plate is required, and whether your door may need modification.
- Power and backup: Confirm battery type or charging method, the manufacturer’s battery-life conditions, low-battery alerts, and your backup entry plan.
- Guest management: Look for the code controls and access-management features your household needs, not just a maximum-code figure.
- Connectivity: Include any required hub, bridge, Thread border router, or keypad in the system comparison.
- Security and exposure: Read the stated certification and its scope separately from connectivity standards. Check any weather or ingress rating for the specific component it covers.
- Privacy and ongoing costs: Review app permissions, account requirements, subscriptions, warranty, and any recurring fee tied to features you plan to use.
Make the decision in this order
- Identify the lock format. Determine whether you need a replacement deadbolt, a retrofit unit, or a product for a European cylinder or multipoint door.
- Confirm physical compatibility. Use the manufacturer’s current measurements and installation guide for your exact door and hardware.
- Pick essential entry methods. Decide whether keypad codes, a mechanical key, fingerprint, phone or wallet credentials, or proximity unlocking matter to you.
- Check your ecosystem. Verify the required Matter controller, Thread border router, bridge, app, and device support for the features you expect to use.
- Price the whole setup. Add any separately sold accessories and compare package contents for the exact model and SKU.
- Review ownership details. Check power, guest management, privacy, certification scope, warranty, and any recurring service costs.
For a retrofit, prioritize preserving the compatible hardware and exterior key access you want. For a replacement deadbolt, focus on door fit, the lock’s entry options, and any controller required. If you want a camera as well as a lock, assess the combined unit’s visitor features and physical fit rather than choosing on the lock label alone.
