Start near the horizontal center, then choose a row where you can comfortably take in the whole screen. There is no universally best IMAX row or official distance rule: auditorium layouts vary, so check the seat map for the specific theater before buying. If expanded IMAX scenes matter to you, confirm the movie’s format and the venue’s presentation too.
How to pick a seat in an IMAX theater
- Open the seat map for your specific show. Compare the available seats in the actual auditorium rather than relying on a row recommendation from another theater.
- Start near the horizontal center. This is a practical way to seek a balanced view, not an official IMAX rule.
- Choose a comfortable distance. Select a row from which you can take in the screen without needing to strain or constantly shift your gaze. IMAX does not publish a numeric best-distance recommendation in the cited material.
- Check the movie and screening format. If you want expanded IMAX scenes, confirm what the film and that venue’s screening offer.
- Buy through the ticket seller. IMAX says tickets are purchased through the seller, such as Fandango or the theater’s website, rather than through IMAX itself.
Use the IMAX theater finder to locate venues, then check the theater’s current showtime and seat map. IMAX’s event listing for Project Hail Mary, dated February 13, 2026, likewise directs customers to confirm listings with their local exhibitor; listings can change.
Why there is no single best row for every IMAX
IMAX describes its auditoriums as customized, with geometry designed for the presentation. Its company materials also describe steeply inclined floors as helping provide clear views. Those design points support checking the sightlines in the auditorium you plan to visit; they do not establish a universal row number or viewing distance.

Check the movie’s IMAX presentation
The screen experience can vary by film and presentation. IMAX says filmmakers may use 1.90:1 or 1.43:1 aspect ratios, with expanded scenes that open vertically to fill more of the screen. If seeing that expanded presentation is part of why you chose IMAX, check the film’s format information and confirm the specific venue and showtime offer it.
Format affects what appears on screen, not which seat is universally best. Still, knowing what presentation to expect can help you decide whether you want a more encompassing view or would rather sit farther back for comfort.

Does one seat have better IMAX sound?
IMAX says its proprietary surround-sound configurations are intended to make every seat an optimal listening position. That is IMAX’s description of its design, not an independent seat-by-seat comparison or a ranking of particular rows. The cited material does not identify a best row for sound.
