A recent Men’s Health guide updated August 10, 2026 names the Adidas Adizero EVO SL its best overall pick, but its other category winners are aimed at recovery runs, lightweight training, speed, and short races.

Men’s Health says it assessed more than 100 pairs of trainers over the preceding two years, logging hundreds of miles on paved roads, tracks, and dirt during HIIT, Hyrox, treadmill sessions, and races from 5Ks to marathons. These are the publication’s editorial category judgments, not an independent comparative test conducted for this article.

Start with the run, not the ranking
Decide whether you need a shoe primarily for easy or recovery miles, everyday training, speed workouts, or racing. A shoe tuned for fast running may not be the comfort-first option you want for relaxed days. If you want one pair for varied sessions, weigh its fit and ride across the runs you do most often rather than relying on an “overall” label.

Check fit in several places
- Measure both foot length and width; foot dimensions and function can change over time.
- Look for a snug fit that is not tight, with roughly a thumb’s width between your longest toe and the shoe’s end.
- Check width and toe-box and midfoot space, as well as comfort underfoot.
- Make sure the tongue does not press uncomfortably and the heel or Achilles area does not rub.
A shoe that feels good standing still can still irritate during a run, so pay attention to pressure or rubbing wherever you can try it under realistic conditions. Match cushioning and ride to your priorities
Cushioning preference depends on your running style, joint considerations, terrain, and pace goals. Consider the surface
For pavement, the guide recommends considering a smoother road outsole. For dirt or gravel, look for a more rugged tread and traction suited to those surfaces. If your routes vary, prioritize the surface you run most or choose based on the conditions where grip matters most.
