There is no single best Fortress Saga hero lineup for every activity. Choose heroes for the job a mode demands, then narrow the options to heroes you own and can upgrade and equip. Use a general tier list as an investment shortlist—not as a universal lineup—and treat mode-specific rankings as advice shaped by their date, region, and progression assumptions.
Start with the mode, then check your roster
A hero’s value can change between wave stages, bosses, Arena, Guild War, farming, and tower-type content. An older mode-by-mode list illustrates that rankings can diverge: it rates Zelos highly in several combat modes but poorly for farming, while Violet is rated well in waves, bosses, farming, and towers but poorly in Arena. Those placements come from a December 16, 2023 guide, so they are useful as an illustration of the principle, not as current recommendations. AllClash’s mode table
For a practical choice, ask three questions in order:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- What is stopping progress? Identify whether you need damage, help controlling groups, protection or healing, or support for a particular ally type.
- Which owned hero can do that job? A highly ranked hero you do not have—or cannot develop enough to use—is less useful than a roster option you can field.
- Can you meet the build requirements? Check the mode guide’s upgrade and equipment assumptions against your account before copying its lineup.
For a broad shortlist, Pocket Gamer’s tier list was updated September 16, 2026, and labels its snapshot version 2.1.02, with Anubis as its latest addition at that time. It places Anubis, Yuyan, Ryo, Beatrice, Violet, Malleus, Ruingaladh, Styria, Iris, Ungula, Mael, Mephisto, Luna, Iblis, Milena, Kahula, Laios, Marcille, Chilchuck, Tails, and Gildong in S+. The guide says its list adapts material based on the Japanese server for the global server; treat it as an editorial guide, not an official or independently tested ranking. It also notes that players may need to upgrade lower-rarity heroes when top-ranked options are unavailable. Pocket Gamer’s Fortress Saga tier list

Match the hero’s function to the activity
Use skills and team interactions to decide whether a hero fits your specific problem; a tier label alone does not explain why a pick might work. Pocket Gamer’s guide describes Violet as a summoner whose Shadow Soldiers benefit from additional stats, Malleus as effective against clusters and able to buff Machina allies, and Styria as a healer and support who can heal and shield allies and passively raise team HP. These are role descriptions from that guide, not comparative performance results.
- Many enemies at once: Look for a role that can handle groups or provide useful area pressure; the cited guide describes Malleus as effective against clusters.
- Team survival: A healer, shield provider, or other defensive support may address the problem; Styria’s guide-described healing and shielding are examples.
- Summon-based strategy: Consider whether your lineup can make use of the summon-related stats Violet’s Shadow Soldiers benefit from.
- Ally-specific synergy: If your formation uses Machina allies, Malleus’s described buff is a reason to consider him—provided he is available and suitably developed.
How to choose by game mode
| Mode | What to prioritize | What current evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Waves | Match your damage and group-control needs to the enemies and stage you are facing. | The available mode-by-mode example is dated December 16, 2023; use it to understand why rankings vary, not to select today’s exact heroes. AllClash |
| Bosses | Choose around the encounter’s demands and the roles your roster can support. | The same older guide separates boss rankings from other modes, but does not establish current placements. AllClash |
| Arena | Use a mode-specific lineup as a starting point, then check its investment and equipment requirements against your account. | A Japanese-language guide updated August 18, 2026 gives an eight-hero example: Kubera, Mael, Tien, Kahula, Styria, Anubis, Kaira, and Malleus. It also specifies upgrade thresholds and equipment/stat recommendations, so the lineup is not a plug-and-play prescription for every roster. Kamigame’s Arena recommended lineup |
| Guild War | Compare the mode’s own recommendations with your available heroes rather than importing an Arena lineup. | A Japanese-language, Japan-focused ranking updated September 16, 2026 places Violet, Kubera, Mael, Iris, Yaksha, Luca, and Tien in its SS tier. Treat this as regional editorial guidance, not a confirmed global ranking. Kamigame’s Guild War hero ranking |
| Farming | Prioritize what makes your farming activity effective; do not assume a combat-focused ranking carries over. | The older mode table shows farming can differ from other modes, but its 2023 placements are not current recommendations. AllClash |
| Tower-type content | Choose for the challenges you are encountering and the roles you can sustain across your lineup. | The older guide ranks tower-type content separately; it does not establish current hero placements. AllClash |
Use Arena and Guild War rankings carefully
Arena: adapt the example to your account
Kamigame’s eight-hero Arena example is a useful roster reference, but its stated upgrade thresholds and equipment/stat recommendations matter as much as the names. If you cannot meet those requirements, use the lineup to identify possible roles or candidates rather than copying it unchanged. The guide is in Japanese and reflects a regional guide context, so its recommendations are not proof of a universally optimal global team. Arena guide

Guild War: keep the ranking in its regional context
Kamigame’s September 16, 2026 Guild War list places Violet, Kubera, Mael, Iris, Yaksha, Luca, and Tien in SS. That is a dated Japanese-language, Japan-focused editorial ranking. Use it to generate candidates for your Guild War roster, then account for your own hero access and investment; do not treat the tier as a global guarantee. Guild War ranking
When a guide’s rankings disagree
Different rankings may be answering different questions: a general tier list can reflect broad usefulness, while a mode guide focuses on one activity and may assume a particular region, roster, or level of investment. Dates matter too. The September 2026 Pocket Gamer snapshot is newer than the December 2023 AllClash mode table, but it is still an editorial tier list, not a controlled comparison of win rates. For exact mode picks, give more weight to a recent guide for that activity while checking its regional scope and prerequisites.
