Choose between Sony’s WH-1000XM over-ear headphones and WF-1000XM wireless earbuds by how you want them to fit and how you use them. The WH line has a headband and earcups, and the current WH-1000XM6 also supports passive wired listening with its detachable cable. The WF line sits in the ear and is easier to carry; the current WF-1000XM6 is rated IPX4 for water resistance. Neither style is universally more comfortable or better sounding—the right choice depends on your fit, routine and priorities.
Start with fit and wearing style
Choose WH over-ear headphones if you prefer a headband
The WH-1000XM line is Sony’s over-ear family. Its headband and earcups make it the natural choice if you prefer headphones that sit around your ears rather than tips inside them. Sony classifies the WH-1000XM6 as a closed, over-ear headphone and lists a carrying case and detachable cable in its specifications.
Choose WF earbuds if you want an in-ear style
The WF-1000XM line is Sony’s truly wireless earbud family. Ear tips rest in the ear canal, so fit depends on your ears and on whether the supplied tip sizes create a secure, comfortable seal. Try the fit if you can; the available specifications do not establish that either family is more comfortable for everyone.
Compare portability and daily routine
Over-ear headphones take up more room in a bag and are worn on the head. Earbuds and their charging case are compact enough for a pocket or small bag, which may suit commuting or carrying headphones throughout the day. In return, the WH-1000XM6’s listed detachable cable gives you a wired fallback, while the WF-1000XM6 relies on its charging case as part of the charging routine.

Understand what the battery figures mean
Sony’s US specifications give maximum music-playback estimates for each model under stated noise-canceling conditions. These are manufacturer maximums, not independent test results; actual playback varies with use. An earbud’s per-charge figure is not the same measure as a full charge of over-ear headphones: earbuds can be charged again from their case.
| Model | Style | Maximum playback with noise canceling on | Maximum playback with noise canceling off |
|---|---|---|---|
| WH-1000XM6 | Over-ear | Up to 30 hours | Up to 40 hours |
| WH-1000XM5 | Over-ear | Up to 30 hours | Up to 40 hours |
| WH-1000XM4 | Over-ear | Up to 30 hours | Up to 38 hours |
| WF-1000XM6 | Wireless earbuds, per charge | Up to 8 hours | Up to 12 hours |
| WF-1000XM5 | Wireless earbuds, per charge | Up to 8 hours | Up to 12 hours |
The figures are Sony’s listed maximums in its US specifications, accessed in 2026. The WF-1000XM6 and WF-1000XM5 specifications also list wireless charging with the case, but the battery figures above are for playback per earbud charge, not a combined total including case recharges.

Consider wired fallback, device switching and water exposure
Wired listening and fallback
Sony lists passive operation and a detachable cable for the WH-1000XM6, so it can be used in passive wired mode. Sony also lists a detachable cable for the WH-1000XM5; the WH-1000XM4 specifications list passive wired operation. If having a cable option matters, check the exact model’s specification rather than assuming every feature is identical across generations. The WF-1000XM6 is a truly wireless model.

Both current models list multipoint. Sony Support says multipoint lets compatible headphones switch between two audio sources without the standard Bluetooth reconnection process, and specifies that it works with only two devices at a time. That can help if you regularly move between a phone and computer, but it is not a connection to more than two sources simultaneously. See Sony’s multipoint guidance for details.

Rain, sweat and splashes
Sony lists IPX4 water resistance for the WF-1000XM6 and IPX4-equivalent water resistance for the WF-1000XM5. Treat that as splash resistance, not waterproofing: it does not establish protection against immersion. The cited WH specifications do not provide a comparable water-resistance rating, so do not assume the over-ear models are suitable for wet conditions.

If you have settled on over-ear headphones, compare the WH-1000XM6 with earlier WH models based on the features you need and the price and stock available where you live. The WH-1000XM5 shares the same listed maximum playback figures as the XM6 and has multipoint and a detachable cable. The WH-1000XM4 lists 30 hours with noise canceling on and 38 hours off, along with LDAC and passive wired operation. These details do not establish a sound-quality or noise-canceling ranking between generations.

For earbuds, the WF-1000XM5 is an earlier-generation option. Sony lists the same maximum playback figures as for the WF-1000XM6, plus multipoint, IPX4-equivalent water resistance, wireless charging with the case and noise-isolation tips in the box. That specification comparison alone does not establish which model is the better value; prices and availability vary by retailer and region.

Make the decision
- Pick WH-1000XM over-ear headphones if you prefer a headband and earcups, want the current WH-1000XM6’s listed detachable cable and passive wired mode, or prefer Sony’s longer listed playback maximum per full charge.
- Pick WF-1000XM earbuds if an in-ear fit and pocketable charging case fit your routine, or if the WF-1000XM6’s listed IPX4 water resistance matters to you.
- Compare exact models if multipoint, wireless charging, wired operation or battery life is decisive. Specifications vary by generation, and the available figures do not settle comfort, sound quality, noise-canceling performance or microphone quality.
