To improve your chances of sitting together, choose a fare that lets you select seats, book children and accompanying adults on the same reservation, and pick adjacent seats as early as possible. If seat selection costs extra or is unavailable, check the airline’s written family-seating policy before buying. Confirm the assignments with the airline after booking and again before departure: a seating commitment is conditional, and an aircraft change can disrupt the arrangement.
This guide focuses on U.S. airline and federal guidance. Airline policies, fare rules, routes, and seat availability vary, so check the operating airline’s current terms for your flight.
Before you buy, check the fare and family-seating policy
Start with the operating airline’s seat-selection rules, not just the fare’s headline price. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) recommends choosing tickets that allow specific seat selection or considering an airline with a fee-free family-seating commitment. Basic economy often does not allow seat selection. Compare the full cost, including any seat-selection charges, and confirm when and how seats can be chosen. DOT’s family seating dashboard is a comparison starting point; verify details with the airline before purchase.

A commitment is not an unconditional promise that adjacent seats will be available on every flight. Eligibility can depend on the child’s age, fare or cabin, booking circumstances, seat availability, and aircraft layout. Read the carrier’s current policy and make sure it fits your specific trip.

What the DOT dashboard says
The dashboard, last updated September 5, 2025, listed five of its nine displayed carriers as having a commitment to fee-free adjacent seating for a child age 13 or under and an accompanying adult: Alaska, American, Frontier, Hawaiian, and JetBlue. It listed no such commitment for Allegiant, Delta, Southwest, or United. This is a count of displayed commitments—not a guarantee that seats are available on a particular flight or a measure of airline outcomes. Policies can change; check the live dashboard and the airline’s own policy before booking.
For carriers with assigned seats, the dashboard describes conditions that can include booking the party on one reservation, adjacent seats being available in the selected class when booked, no substitution to a smaller aircraft, and following the airline’s seat-selection rules. Depending on the policy, an adult may need to select seats for everyone or leave the entire reservation unselected, and may not be able to change assignments after they are made. Where conditions are met, the adjacent assignment is to be provided no later than the day before the flight. Open-seating commitments have different conditions, including notifying a gate agent before boarding begins. Check the carrier’s terms for the rules that apply to your itinerary. How to book seats together
- Choose a fare with a workable seat policy. Before paying, check whether the fare allows you to choose specific seats and whether a fee applies. If not, see whether the carrier’s family-seating commitment covers your child’s age and circumstances.
- Put the family on one reservation. Book accompanying adults and children together under the same reservation record. DOT says airlines generally recognize people on one reservation as a party and give priority to parents and children booked together.
- Select adjacent seats as early as you can. Earlier booking makes adjacent seats more likely to be available. If the seat map does not show a suitable group of seats, contact the airline’s reservations team and ask whether more seats may become available. Do not assume the airline will automatically seat the family together later.
- Verify the assignment directly with the airline. Check the airline’s own reservation system after purchase. If you bought through a travel agency or another third party, confirm the seats with the airline as well. Keep a note of any instructions the airline gives about check-in or contacting a gate agent.
- Check again before departure. Revisit the reservation for schedule or aircraft changes, which can change the seat map or assignments.
If your child is assigned a separate seat
Contact the airline’s reservations team as soon as you see that the family is split. Explain that you are traveling with a child and ask for adjacent seats. If it cannot place the whole party together, ask for each child to be seated beside an accompanying adult. DOT says the airline may be able to arrange that even when it cannot seat the entire family in one group.

What U.S. policy does—and does not—require
The DOT dashboard helps compare airline commitments, but it does not establish a universal current right to fee-free family seating. DOT’s rulemaking agenda says the department issued a proposed rule on August 9, 2024, and is considering next steps; the next action is undetermined. The proposed rule should not be treated as an effective requirement. Check the rulemaking agenda.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Seat selection and child restraints are separate decisions
A child restraint does not reserve seats or ensure that a family is seated together. If a child under two has their own seat, the FAA strongly urges use of an approved child restraint system (CRS) or alternative device. Buying a ticket is the only way to guarantee the child can use a CRS in their own seat. CRS use is not required on commercial airplanes, but is strongly recommended. The FAA says: “The safest place for your child under the age of two on a U.S. airplane is in approved child restraint system (CRS) or device, not in your lap.” FAA Kids’ Corner guidance (last updated August 18, 2026) and its child safety FAQ explain the distinction.

A CRS must have the relevant aircraft certification label or qualifying foreign approval, fit the child’s height and weight limits, and be installed according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Airline rules may also affect where it can be used. CARES is an aircraft-only restraint option for a child who can sit upright alone facing forward, weighs 22 to 44 pounds, and is up to 40 inches tall. The FAA warns that counterfeit CARES devices are sold online and advises buying directly from the manufacturer. Check the FAA’s current guidance and your airline’s requirements before travel.
