Choose running shoes by getting a secure, comfortable fit first, then matching the pair to the surfaces and sessions you run most. Gait and arch shape can help guide what to try, but neither alone can identify a shoe that will prevent injury. Compare suitable options in both shoes, ideally with a brief run, and get clinical advice for persistent pain or recurring injuries.

1. Get the fit right before choosing a shoe category

If you are unsure of your size or have not had your feet measured recently, measure both feet. Feet can change over time, and one may be larger than the other; choose a pair that fits the larger foot comfortably. Northwestern Medicine’s September 2026 guide recommends regular measuring and prioritizing a comfortable fit for the larger foot (Northwestern Medicine).

Try both shoes with the socks, orthotics, or braces you normally wear. Check that your heel feels secure and your toes are not crowded. Walk around and, when the shop allows it, run in the shoes. Nationwide Children’s recommends trying both shoes with your usual equipment and running in them when possible (Nationwide Children’s). Trying later in the day may help account for normal foot swelling.

2. Match the pair to where and how you run

Think about where most of your miles happen: roads, track, treadmill, or uneven trails. The surface and session can affect the grip, protection, cushioning, weight, and feel that suit you. A shoe for everyday road miles may not be the best choice for a technical trail or a speed session. UCSF Health recommends considering both foot shape and the intended type of running (UCSF Health).

Check the current specifications for the particular shoe before relying on a category label or retailer description. A single pair may work for several kinds of running, but it need not be the best fit for every terrain or goal.

3. Use gait and arch shape as clues—not prescriptions

Pronation is the foot’s normal rolling motion. Traditional guidance often associates a neutral gait with neutral shoes and greater inward rolling with stability features; some broad arch-based charts also suggest different shoe types for low, normal, or high arches. Those labels can help you decide what to try, but they are not diagnoses and do not reliably identify one ideal shoe for every runner.

The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine says footwear responses are not systematic across people and that shoe suggestions should be individualized (AAPSM). The American Podiatric Medical Association also offers broad suggestions by arch type (APMA), but an arch category by itself should not dictate a purchase.

In its 2022 review, Cochrane found most evidence comparing running shoes to be of low or very low certainty. For military recruits, shoes prescribed according to static foot posture did not show evidence of reducing injuries compared with shoes not prescribed that way: rate ratio 1.03 (95% confidence interval 0.94 to 1.13) (Cochrane review). This result applies to that studied comparison; it does not establish that every shoe category performs equally for every runner. It does mean you should not count on gait matching or stability features as a proven injury-prevention guarantee.

4. Compare appropriate pairs by how they work for you

Once you have shoes that fit and suit your usual surface, compare their practical trade-offs. A category name or arch chart cannot substitute for trying them on.

  • Fit and comfort: Check toe room, width, heel security, rubbing, pressure points, and how the shoe feels during a brief run.
  • Surface: For trails, verify that the actual model’s outsole grip and protection suit the terrain; for roads or a track, consider the feel and protection you want on those surfaces.
  • Support feel: Try neutral, stability, or more structured motion-control designs as options to assess—not as automatic consequences of your arch height. A clinician can help if you have a specific medical need.
  • Cushioning and flexibility: Choose a feel that is comfortable and appropriate for your session. More cushioning is not universally safer or better.
  • Running goal: Everyday mileage, speed sessions, racing, and trail running can involve different trade-offs in weight, feel, grip, and protection.

There is no universal ideal shoe established by these sources, and no current individual model has been verified here. Choose among pairs that fit and suit your use rather than treating a model ranking or a gait label as a guarantee.

5. Know when to ask a clinician

Talk with a sports-medicine physician or podiatrist if foot pain persists, injuries keep recurring, you cannot resolve fit problems by trying different sizes or shapes, or you have had a bone injury. Northwestern Medicine recommends expert guidance for repeat injuries, long-term pain, or a history of bone-related problems (Northwestern Medicine). More support features are not a substitute for evaluating a persistent problem.
