Choose rugby boots by starting with two things: how securely and comfortably they fit your feet, and whether their outsole suits the pitches you play on. Try the specific model with your rugby socks if possible, leave room so your toes do not touch the boot, and check club or facility rules before buying for artificial turf. Position can help narrow options, but it should come after fit and surface.

Start with fit, not the size number

A rugby boot should feel secure and comfortable, with a close fit toward the end of the foot but no toe contact. Adidas gives this as its fit guidance for rugby boots (adidas UK rugby boots). A boot that feels too tight at the toes or unstable around the foot is not a good choice just because its size matches another brand.

Try boots with the socks you wear for rugby when possible. Foot shape and boot construction differ, and the available guidance does not establish a validated size conversion between brands or a standardized comfort test. Gilbert describes its own specialist rugby boots as wider fitting than most football boots; treat that as a description of the Gilbert range, not a guarantee that every rugby boot is wide or will suit every foot (Gilbert Rugby Boots Buyers Guide).

  • Check that your foot feels held in place without uncomfortable pressure.
  • Make sure your toes do not touch the front of the boot.
  • Assess the particular model on your own foot rather than relying on a size label or a general claim about rugby-boot width.

Choose the outsole for your pitch and conditions

World Rugby advises players to use footwear that is in good condition and appropriate for the playing surface (World Rugby Passport: Equipment, environment and emergency plan). Before comparing boots, identify where you play most: natural grass or artificial turf, and, for grass, whether it is usually firm and dry or soft and wet. Ask your club or facility about any footwear restrictions.

Pitch or conditions What to look for Guidance and qualification
Soft, wet or muddy natural grass An outsole explicitly intended for soft ground. Adidas describes soft-ground rugby boots for wet or muddy surfaces. Gilbert describes longer-stud, eight-stud designs for soft, wet or muddy ground. These are manufacturer descriptions, not a universal outsole standard.
Firm or dry ground An outsole intended for firm conditions; check the maker’s description for the specific model. Gilbert describes moulded options for firm ground and shorter, multiple studs for hard or dry surfaces. Outsole categories and labels can differ between manufacturers.
Artificial turf A boot intended for the actual surface, subject to facility guidance. Adidas lists artificial/turf as a category. World Rugby’s One Turf guidance warns that excessive grip can reduce the natural slippage expected on the surface and may increase potential ankle and knee joint injury risk. It does not establish one outsole as mandatory for every artificial pitch (World Rugby One Turf).

There is no universal outsole taxonomy covering every maker, competition or artificial surface. If you play on more than one type of pitch, prioritize the surfaces you use and check venue rules rather than assuming that a boot suited to one pitch will work everywhere.

Inspect studs and check the applicable rules

Before playing, inspect the outsole and studs for wear, damage, burrs or sharp edges. World Rugby’s Approved Equipment: Outsoles page states that studs must not be longer than 21 mm and must not have burring or sharp edges. That specification page says it was last updated on 1 January 2019, so check the live wording of World Rugby Regulation 12, current Law 4 and your competition’s rules before treating that measurement as current advice.

Stud safety is not only about length: the specification also discusses shape, profile, edge radius, hardness, the tendency to burr and wear. Its testing guidance is directed at manufacturers, not a player fit test. If your boots use replaceable studs, use only parts and tools specified for that boot model; do not assume a generic replacement will fit.

Use position as a secondary preference

Once fit and pitch suitability are settled, your position and playing style can help you choose between appropriate options. Gilbert associates eight-stud designs with forwards seeking grip for scrummaging and rucking on soft, wet or muddy ground, and describes moulded designs with shorter, multiple studs for hard, dry or artificial surfaces. These are product-selection cues from a manufacturer, not requirements for every forward or back.

Do not trade away a secure, comfortable fit or suitable surface grip solely to follow a positional stereotype. Compare the specific boot’s fit and intended conditions first, then consider whether its construction suits your preferences.
