Choose seed in two stages: first select a variety that suits your crop, purpose, climate and soil; then verify that the specific lot is clean, viable, vigorous, healthy and honestly labeled. A high germination percentage cannot compensate for a variety that is poorly adapted to your region.

Use local extension advice or your regional seed authority for variety recommendations and legal requirements. Compare current, lot-specific information rather than relying on a brand name, an old package or certification alone.

What “quality seed” actually means

Seed quality is multidimensional. A lot can germinate well in a laboratory yet be the wrong variety for your field, contain unwanted crop or weed seed, perform poorly under stress, or lack important treatment and traceability information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Quality dimension Question it answers Evidence to look for
Variety identity and regional fit Will this genetic type suit the crop, market and local growing conditions? Named kind and variety, trait descriptions, local trial or extension advice
Physical purity How much of the lot is the stated seed rather than debris or other material? Pure-seed percentage, inert-matter percentage and an official or current test
Germination How many pure seeds produced normal seedlings under the stated favorable test conditions? Germination percentage, test date and testing standard
Vigor How likely are seedlings to emerge rapidly and uniformly when conditions are less than ideal? Vigor result or test method, when provided
Seed health Could seed carry a disease or pest that threatens establishment or later crops? Health test, treatment disclosure and any quarantine or movement requirements
Truthful lot information Can you identify, compare and trace this exact lot? Lot number, test details, seller or shipper identity and complete label

Think of these as separate checks. “Certified” describes a documented production and verification process; it does not mean the variety is suitable for every region or that every quality attribute is identical across lots.

Step 1: Define the crop, use and growing region

Write down the decision the seed must support before comparing packets or suppliers.

Identify the crop and end use

  • Specify the crop and, where relevant, the market class or end use: fresh market, processing, grain, forage, seed production, home garden or conservation planting.
  • Set the planting window and expected harvest date. Early, midseason and late types can differ in maturity enough to determine whether a crop escapes heat, frost or seasonal rain.
  • List production constraints such as rain-fed versus irrigated production, protected culture, organic rules, mechanized harvest and available labor.

Describe the local environment

  • Record climate factors that affect the crop: temperature range, frost dates, rainfall pattern, humidity, day length and the length of the season.
  • Note soil texture, drainage, pH, salinity, fertility and known pest or disease pressure.
  • Consider elevation and microclimate. A variety successful in a nearby lowland may mature differently at higher elevation or on a cooler, shaded site.

Ask a local agricultural extension service, public seed authority or experienced crop adviser which varieties are suitable for your specific area. The Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service gives the advice plainly: “Consult the Agricultural Extension Service for advice on the suitability of various crop varieties for their specific regions.” Treat that as a starting point for local evidence, not as a substitute for checking the lot you will buy.

Step 2: Choose a variety for traits, not a universal “best” label

Genetics influence yield potential, maturity, environmental adaptation and resistance or tolerance to insects and disease. The best choice depends on the combination of crop, location, production system and intended use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match maturity to the season

Compare the stated days to maturity or harvest window with your frost-free period, heat risk and water availability. A longer-season variety may have useful yield potential where the season is long, but it can fail to finish before cold or drought in a shorter season. A shorter-season type may fit a tight window but have different yield, quality or disease characteristics.

Match resistance and tolerance claims to local pressure

Use resistance information only when the named disease or pest occurs in your area and the claim applies to the strain or race present there. Resistance is not the same as immunity, and it does not remove the need for rotation, sanitation or other integrated management.

Match quality traits to the buyer

Fresh-market buyers may value size, color, shelf life or uniformity; processors may require solids, moisture, shape or timing; livestock operations may prioritize forage quality and harvest timing. A variety that performs well for one use can be uneconomic for another even when it grows successfully.

Use local performance evidence carefully

Local trial results, extension recommendations and neighboring-farm experience are useful when the trial conditions resemble your field. Ask how the variety was tested, in which season and soil, and whether the result applies to your production system. Do not transfer a recommendation from another country or climate without checking the differences.

Step 3: Read the seed lot label line by line

The label is your evidence about the particular lot, not merely about the species. Requirements differ by jurisdiction, crop and sales channel, so confirm the rules where the seed is sold and planted.

Kind and variety

“Kind” identifies the crop species or crop group; “variety” identifies the named genetic type when a variety name is required. Verify spelling and identity against your order, production plan and local recommendation. A lot labeled only with a crop name may not provide the varietal information you need for a location-sensitive decision.

Pure seed

Pure seed is the share of the lot that meets the stated kind and variety definition under the applicable testing rules. It is not the same as germination. A lot can have high germination among pure seeds while still containing significant inert matter or other seed.

Inert matter

Inert matter includes non-seed material such as dirt, chaff or plant fragments. More inert material means less of the purchased weight is potentially plantable seed and can interfere with handling or metering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other crop seed and weed seed

Other crop seed can introduce an unintended crop into the field. Weed seed can create control costs, contaminate harvests or violate market and regulatory requirements. Look for the percentages or counts required in your jurisdiction, including any listed noxious weeds.

Germination percentage and test date

Germination is the proportion of pure seed that produces normal seedlings under the specified test conditions. Record both the percentage and the date or validity period. A current result is more useful than an old figure because viability changes with age and storage.

Lot identification and seller details

Keep the lot number, test information and seller or shipper name and address. In U.S. interstate commerce, the Federal Seed Act requires specified label information, including purity and germination percentages, noxious weed-seed information, treatment disclosure where applicable, kind and variety identification, and the interstate shipper’s name and address. Those requirements apply to that U.S. channel; they are not a universal label template.

Treatment disclosure

Look for the chemical or biological treatment name and the required safety language. Treated seed may require different handling, personal protective equipment, disposal and restrictions on use as food or feed. Follow the label and local rules; never assume treated seed is safe to eat, save or repackage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Germination and vigor answer different questions

Germination tests are conducted under defined, favorable conditions so lots can be compared consistently. Field conditions are rarely perfect. Cold soil, crusting, excess moisture, drought, salinity, planting depth, pests and mechanical damage can all reduce emergence.

What a germination result tells you

A germination percentage estimates the share of pure seeds producing normal seedlings in the stated standard test. It helps calculate how much seed to sow and compare lots tested by the same or an equivalent method. It does not prove that seedlings will emerge rapidly in cold soil or survive a disease challenge.

What vigor tells you

Vigor describes performance under stress and the ability to emerge quickly and uniformly. Vigor tests can be especially useful for early planting, heavy soils, cool conditions, drought-prone fields, long storage or crops where uneven emergence reduces yield or makes mechanical harvest difficult. A vigor result is meaningful only when you know the test method and how closely it represents your conditions.

Calculate viable planting units

Use purity and germination together when comparing weight-based packages:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

estimated viable seed fraction = pure-seed fraction × germination fraction

For example, a lot labeled 98% pure seed and 90% germination has an estimated 0.98 × 0.90 = 0.882, or 88.2% viable pure seed under the test assumptions. If a 1,000-seed packet costs $20, the illustrative cost per expected viable seed is $20 ÷ 882, or about 2.3 cents. This is a planning calculation, not a guarantee of field emergence. Use the actual lot values, package weight or seed count, and your planting rate.

Use certification as assurance, not as a substitute for local fit

Certification generally adds controlled steps such as field inspection, processing inspection, sampling, laboratory testing and official labeling. It can strengthen confidence in varietal identity, production practices and test records when the certifying authority and class are legitimate.

Why jurisdiction matters

Certification classes, minimum standards and legal definitions differ. Kenya’s seed-certification system describes field and processing inspections, sampling and laboratory testing. The European Union has its own marketing requirements for agricultural varieties, value-for-cultivation-and-use considerations and certification procedures. U.S. Federal Seed Act labeling addresses seed shipped in interstate commerce, while the U.S. Department of Agriculture also provides physical-purity, noxious-weed, germination, vigor, viability, moisture and variety testing through its seed-testing program.

These systems should not be treated as interchangeable. Ask which authority issued the certificate, what class or standard it represents, what was inspected, and whether the certificate applies to the crop and sales channel you are using.

What certification does not establish

  • It does not prove that a variety is adapted to your soil, elevation, rainfall or planting date.
  • It does not make every lot from the same variety identical in age, vigor or storage history.
  • It does not eliminate the need to read treatment instructions or check seed-health restrictions.
  • It does not replace local extension guidance or on-farm risk assessment.

Compare seed lots with a consistent worksheet

If a seller cannot provide a lot number, current test information or required treatment details, treat that missing information as a risk rather than filling in the gap with assumptions.

Check seed health, treatment and handling before planting

Seed health

Seed can carry pathogens or pests between fields and regions. Check whether the crop has known seed-borne diseases, whether your destination has quarantine rules, and whether a health test or phytosanitary document is required. A clean-looking packet is not evidence that seed is pathogen-free.

Treatment decisions

Treatment may protect seed or seedlings from specific diseases or pests, but its value depends on the target problem and the product’s permitted use. Read the active ingredient or treatment name, crop, target organism, rate, storage instructions and safety precautions. Verify whether treated seed may be used in organic production, saved for replanting or fed to animals; requirements vary.

Moisture and packaging

Seed moisture at packaging and during storage affects longevity and physical damage risk. Prefer intact, clearly dated packaging and ask how the lot was stored if the information is available. Do not promise a fixed storage life without lot-specific moisture, temperature, packaging and test data.

Transport and storage after purchase

  • Keep seed dry, cool and protected from rodents, insects, direct sunlight and condensation.
  • Store bags off the floor and away from fertilizers, fuels and chemicals that could contaminate them.
  • Label opened containers with the crop, variety, lot number, treatment and opening date.
  • Use older lots first only after checking that their current viability still meets your planting plan.
  • Retain the original label and purchase record until establishment and any quality dispute are resolved.

Adjust your planting rate without hiding poor quality

Use the lot’s purity and germination values to estimate viable seed, then account for your target stand, seed size and planter calibration. Increasing the seeding rate can compensate for some expected loss, but it cannot correct varietal mismatch, severe disease, poor vigor or contaminated seed.

For high-value crops, test a representative sample or conduct a small emergence check before committing an entire field. Compare emergence speed and uniformity with your target conditions. A laboratory result and a field check answer different questions, so document both rather than replacing one with the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing a variety because it has the highest germination percentage

Germination measures performance in a defined favorable test. Start with regional adaptation and intended-use traits, then use germination and vigor to choose among suitable varieties and lots.

Assuming certification means local adaptation

Certification verifies the requirements of a particular scheme. Confirm the certifying authority and still seek local variety advice.

Comparing package prices instead of planting costs

Different package sizes, seed counts, purities and germination rates make sticker prices misleading. Calculate cost per expected viable seed or per planned area using current lot information.

Ignoring the test date

Two packets with the same printed germination percentage may have very different ages and storage histories. Record the test date and ask whether the seller can provide a current retest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overlooking contaminants

Weed seed, other crop seed and inert matter can increase hand-weeding, cleaning and regulatory risk. Read those fields even when germination looks excellent.

Buying unidentified or relabeled seed

Without a lot number, variety identity and responsible seller, you cannot reliably compare quality or trace a problem. Choose a source that provides the information required in your jurisdiction.

Treating all regions’ rules as one standard

U.S., Kenyan, EU and other systems use different legal definitions and certification procedures. Apply the rules of the place where the seed is sold and planted, and ask the local authority when in doubt.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Write the crop, end use, planting window and field location.
  2. Ask local extension or the relevant seed authority for varieties suited to that region and production system.
  3. Shortlist varieties by maturity, resistance or tolerance, quality traits and market requirements.
  4. Obtain current lot labels or certificates from each prospective source.
  5. Verify kind, variety, lot number, test date, pure seed, inert matter, other crop seed, weed seed and germination.
  6. Look for vigor or emergence information when planting conditions may be stressful.
  7. Review seed-health statements, treatment names, safety directions and any movement restrictions.
  8. Confirm the certification authority and what its class or standard covers.
  9. Calculate viable planting units and cost per viable unit, then compare the lots on equal terms.
  10. Store the selected lot correctly, retain its records and run a small emergence check when the crop or seed cost justifies it.

When to contact an authority or reject a lot

Contact your extension service or seed regulator when a variety recommendation is unclear, a certificate cannot be verified, a label omits information required locally, a treatment conflicts with your intended use, or a shipment crosses a quarantine boundary. Set a lot aside when packaging is damaged, seed is damp or infested, the identity is uncertain, or the supplied test information is too old for the risk you are taking.
