Choose protection based on the wavelengths that trigger your photosensitivity—not on the biggest rating alone. UPF describes ultraviolet (UV) protection through fabric; it does not show whether clothing or window film blocks visible light. Ask your treating clinician which wavelengths matter for your condition, then compare clothing coverage and film test data against that advice.
What UPF clothing should I wear for photosensitivity?
Look for a stated UPF rating and choose garments that cover the areas you need to protect. DermNet recommends UPF 30 or higher. A UPF 50 fabric allows about 2% of UV radiation to pass through—equivalent to blocking about 98%—but that figure describes UV, not visible light. See DermNet’s clothing guidance.
Compare the garment, not just its label
- Coverage: Consider long sleeves, long trousers or skirts, a hat that shades the face and neck, and gloves or enclosed shoes if useful for your situation. A rating only applies to the fabric tested; it cannot protect skin the garment leaves exposed.
- Weave and opacity: Dense, tightly woven fabric can provide useful coverage. DermNet describes looser-fitting garments as useful; avoid stretching the fabric, which can reduce protection. If visible light is also a trigger, ask your clinician whether opaque, dark or densely woven garments are appropriate. UPF alone does not establish visible-light protection.
- Wetness, washing and wear: Wet or worn fabric may protect less effectively. Follow care instructions and replace garments when their condition or fit changes enough to compromise coverage.
- Comfort and fit: A garment must cover the intended skin without being stretched tight. Weigh coverage and fabric density against comfort in the conditions where you will wear it.
Understand what a UPF number means
UPF is the amount of UV transmitted through fabric; it is not SPF, which rates sunscreen, and it is not a visible-light rating. Labeling rules vary by country. UK government guidance from 2014 says a garment needs UPF of at least 40 to be labeled solar UV-protective under the standard it describes; it also explains that UPF 20 lets one-twentieth as much UV reach covered skin as bare skin. DermNet describes a minimum UPF of 15 in US, Australian and New Zealand guidance and at least 40 in European guidance. Check the standard and documentation that apply where you live rather than treating regional thresholds as interchangeable. See the UK government explanation and DermNet’s overview.

Does window film block UVA?
It can, but performance depends on the glazing and the film. Ordinary clear glass blocks UVB but can transmit UVA and visible light. A review of glass and photoprotection reports that UVA transmission varies with glass type, thickness and color, and that film can greatly decrease UVA transmission. University Hospital Southampton’s patient leaflet explains the distinction and says clear film may provide some UVA protection. Read the hospital leaflet and the review abstract.
Check the wavelengths and test evidence
Ask for measured performance for both UVA and UVB. If visible light is a known trigger, also look for technical data on visible wavelengths relevant to your clinician’s advice. The Skin Cancer Foundation requires 99% or greater UVA and UVB blocking for products in its window film, tint, lenses and glass Seal category. That is a UV criterion; it does not establish that a product blocks visible wavelengths that may trigger symptoms. See the Seal criteria.

University Hospital Southampton says that people sensitive to visible light may get some protection from clear film or may need a colored film. Do not assume clear UV film is a complete solution if visible light is relevant. Ask your clinician which wavelengths to address, then compare the exact film’s current technical data rather than relying on claims such as “sun blocking” or on its appearance. A colored film may be worth discussing, but its color alone does not prove suitable performance.
Check fit before installation
Confirm that the exact film is compatible with your building or vehicle glazing and ask the manufacturer or installer about installation requirements. Check any vehicle tint rules that apply locally. Compatibility and current local rules depend on the product and location; they are not established by a general UV-blocking claim.

How do I compare clothing and window film?
These products address different exposure routes, so their ratings are not directly comparable. Use a checklist for each rather than choosing by a single number.
| What to check | Clothing | Window film |
|---|---|---|
| UV performance | Stated UPF and applicable local standard; UPF is a fabric UV rating. | Measured UVA and UVB blocking for the exact film. |
| Coverage or wavelength range | How much skin the garment covers; if visible light matters, whether the garment is suitable for that trigger. | Visible-wavelength transmission data if visible light matters; a UV rating alone does not answer this. |
| Real-world factors | Weave, opacity, fit, stretch, wetness, laundering and wear. | Compatibility with the exact glazing and installation requirements. |
| Evidence | Product documentation and any applicable independent certification, such as a qualifying Skin Cancer Foundation Seal. | Current technical data and any independent certification; verify what wavelengths a certification actually covers. |
Can sunlight through a window trigger a reaction?
It can, depending on the condition and the wavelengths that cause the reaction. Ordinary clear glass blocks UVB but can transmit UVA and visible light, so being indoors behind a window does not necessarily remove relevant exposure. The appropriate response depends on your diagnosis and trigger spectrum; a UV-focused UPF label or film claim does not establish protection from visible light.

Why does the right protection depend on the condition?
Photosensitivity describes multiple disorders with different action spectra and severity. DermNet notes that the protection needed varies by disorder and geography; UVA and visible light can each be relevant in different cases. Some people with porphyria are sensitive to blue-violet visible light, and the American Porphyria Foundation describes opaque, tightly knitted clothing as a protective measure for some patients. That advice is condition-specific, not a universal prescription. See DermNet’s photosensitivity reference and the American Porphyria Foundation’s patient information.
If you have lupus, the American Academy of Dermatology advises sun protection, including UPF clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen, and recommends discussing potentially photosensitizing medicines with your clinician. Do not stop or change a medicine without medical advice. See the AAD’s lupus guidance.

How should clothing and film fit into a protection plan?
Use clothing and film as parts of a plan tailored with your treating clinician, not as proof that all relevant light has been blocked. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends seeking shade, wearing UPF-labeled clothing and applying broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher sunscreen to uncovered skin. Follow your clinician’s advice about the wavelengths relevant to your condition and any additional precautions. See the AAD’s sun-protection guidance.
A hospital leaflet also names wash-in UV-protective fabric treatment as an option and says it must be repeated regularly. If considering one, check its instructions and discuss suitability with your clinician; it does not replace checking which wavelengths your condition responds to.
