Choose a privacy-focused provider by checking what it encrypts, what the provider can still access, where data is stored or processed, and how the service handles retention, recovery, and your day-to-day work. A privacy label, a server location, or an “encrypted” claim is not enough on its own. The available provider information supports a few product-specific comparisons, but it does not establish a comprehensive ranking of cloud services or consumer AI tools.
What should you compare before switching?
Start with the data you plan to move and the harm you want to prevent. Protecting file contents from provider access is a different goal from choosing a storage region, limiting account records, or preventing submitted prompts from being used to train AI models. A provider may address one of these without addressing the others.
Use these questions for each specific product
- Encryption: Which data types are encrypted? Is encryption end-to-end, zero-access, or otherwise accessible to the provider? What happens to file names, sharing details, and other metadata?
- Access and records: What account activity or diagnostic records can the provider access? Are there exceptions for spam, abuse, support, or legal requests?
- Location: Where are data stored and processed? Can you select a region, and does that choice apply to every copy, backup, and subprocess?
- Retention and deletion: How long are data retained, including backups, and what does deletion mean in practice? What does the provider disclose about legal requests?
- AI use: Can submitted files, prompts, or outputs be used to train models? Does the answer differ by account type, product, or setting?
- Keys and recovery: Who controls encryption keys, and what happens if an account or key is lost? Does recovery change who can access data?
- Practical fit: Can you export and migrate data? Does the service support the sharing, collaboration, integrations, accessibility, administration, and budget you need?
Ask for current product-specific privacy and technical documentation. If a provider does not clearly answer a question that matters to your use case, treat the answer as unknown rather than inferring protection from a general company policy.

These descriptions come from the named providers’ product, privacy, or help information. They cover different products and use cases, so they should not be read as equivalent guarantees.
How should you compare cloud storage options?
Separate encrypted content from accessible records
For Proton, product boundaries matter. Proton’s general privacy policy covers a suite of services, but its Drive and Mail information describes different data handling. Proton says Drive files are stored encrypted. Separately, Proton says it cannot access encrypted Mail message content, while identifying account activity records it can access and saying that unencrypted messages exchanged between Proton and external providers may be scanned for spam and viruses. The Mail details are a useful illustration of why an encryption statement about one product or data type should not be applied to every service or every record.

Treat location as a control, not an encryption guarantee
Proton lists Drive servers in Switzerland, Germany, or Norway. Hetzner says cloud storage location depends on the product location a customer selects. These facts can help you evaluate location requirements, but neither establishes by itself who can read the stored content or whether the service meets a particular legal or compliance obligation. Verify which data and copies a location choice covers.
Account for the work of running your own service
A hosted or self-managed option may offer location choices, but control brings configuration and maintenance responsibilities. Do not treat a hosting location as a substitute for understanding encryption, backups, access controls, updates, recovery, and who is responsible for each task. The available information does not provide a complete managed Nextcloud comparison, so it cannot support a general claim that self-hosting is more private or easier than a managed alternative.

Can you identify an AI provider that will not train on your data?
The available documentation is not sufficient to recommend a consumer AI provider on that basis. Mistral’s cited guidance concerns organization data location and safeguards for personal-data processing; it does not establish consumer-account training terms. No comparable set of current primary consumer AI terms is available here, so a broad claim that a named provider “does not train on your data” would go beyond what is established.
What to verify in an AI service’s current terms
- Whether prompts, uploaded files, and generated outputs may be used for model training or service improvement.
- Whether the answer changes for consumer versus organization accounts, or when an administrator changes a setting.
- How long inputs and outputs are retained, including for safety review, abuse prevention, or support.
- Which service providers process the data, where processing occurs, and what safeguards apply.
- How to disable optional use, delete submitted data, and confirm that the setting applies to the product and account you use.
Get the answer from the current terms and privacy documentation for the exact product and account type. If the service does not clearly answer these questions, avoid submitting sensitive information until you have a suitable written commitment or have confirmed an alternative workflow.

How do you choose without sacrificing usability?
Privacy protections only help if the service fits the way you need to work. Before moving important data, check export and migration options, collaboration and sharing, integrations, accessibility, account recovery, administrative controls, and total cost. The provider information described above does not offer a comparable evaluation of these workflow factors, so assess them against your own requirements rather than assuming one option wins across the board.

A practical selection process
- List the data and users. Separate ordinary working files from sensitive documents, and note who needs access and from which devices or locations.
- Set non-negotiable privacy requirements. For example, decide whether you require end-to-end encryption, a selectable storage region, or explicit limits on AI training. Do not treat these as interchangeable.
- Check primary documentation product by product. Record what is stated about encryption, metadata, location, retention, deletion, recovery, and AI use. Mark anything unclear as unknown.
- Test the workflow with non-sensitive material. Confirm that sharing, collaboration, accessibility, administration, and export work for your users before migrating important data.
- Plan migration and recovery. Keep an appropriate copy of important data during the move, establish who manages access and keys, and understand the recovery path before relying on the new account.
- Recheck policies when needs or services change. Product features, terms, and regional availability can change; revisit the specific documentation when renewing, changing account type, or adopting a new feature.
What is the right decision?
There is no well-supported universal winner in the available information. For cloud storage, compare encryption scope and provider access separately from location, then test the service against your recovery and workflow needs. For AI, do not rely on a general privacy label or an organization safeguard to answer whether consumer prompts are used for training; obtain current, product-specific terms before submitting sensitive data.
