Choose phone storage by starting with how much space you use now, then allowing for what you expect to add before replacing the phone. Check the storage breakdown on your current device, account for apps and their data, photos and videos, offline downloads, and leave a working margin. A photo count or minutes-per-gigabyte estimate is not reliable without specifying the phone and camera settings.

How much phone storage do you need?

The best capacity is the smallest option that comfortably covers your current use, expected growth, and the files you want available offline. Start with the storage screen rather than a generic recommendation: it shows which categories are actually using space on your phone.

  1. Check current use. On iPhone, open Settings → General → [device] Storage. Review total used space, the largest apps, and any storage recommendations. Other phones have a storage section in Settings; menu names vary by manufacturer and software version.
  2. Separate keep-local files from retrievable files. Note large games, work files, downloaded shows, music, maps, and camera originals you want available without a connection. Streaming or cloud access can reduce local needs, but only for content you are comfortable retrieving later.
  3. Estimate growth. If your phone or a recent backup shows usage over time, use that trend to estimate how much you may add during your expected ownership period. Account for new apps and media rather than assuming today’s total will remain unchanged.
  4. Compare the exact capacity options and price difference. Pick a tier with room for growth and routine use, not one that leaves the phone nearly full. Available capacities and prices vary by model, market, and time.
  5. Check specialist recording needs. If you shoot long or high-bitrate video, verify the exact model’s recording limits and external-storage support before choosing.

The headline capacity is not entirely available for your own content: the operating system and other device data also use space. Treat the advertised tier as a starting point, not as a promise of equivalent free room for photos and apps.

What uses phone storage?

Photos, music, apps, and other content all use device storage, as Apple Support explains. The balance differs from person to person, so a large app or offline download may matter more than a typical photo library.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
  • Apps and app data: Games and creative apps can be substantial, and saved projects, downloads, and cached content may add to an app’s footprint.
  • Photos and videos: Local originals take space. Video use varies with resolution, frame rate, format or codec, recording duration, and editing copies.
  • Offline media and files: Downloaded shows, music, maps, and work documents remain on the phone until removed or replaced.
  • System and other data: The phone needs space for its operating system and working data, so not all built-in capacity can be assigned to personal media.

Is 128GB enough, or should you choose 256GB or 512GB?

There is no capacity tier that fits everyone. Use your storage breakdown and habits to judge the options offered for the specific phone. The table describes decision patterns, not a guarantee of how many files fit.

Capacity choice May suit you if Check before choosing
128GB Your current use is modest, you do not keep many large files offline, and you are comfortable managing downloads or using cloud photo optimization. Whether expected growth will leave enough room for apps, camera capture, and everyday working space. Some recording features are also restricted by capacity on supported iPhones.
256GB You want more room for a growing library, larger apps, downloads, or keeping more content on the phone. Whether the extra capacity is worth its price for your actual habits; compare the exact model’s available recording options.
512GB or more You keep substantial content locally, often travel offline, use large creative apps, or record high-quality video. Whether your phone offers the desired tier and whether your workload is limited by model-specific camera settings rather than capacity alone.

These are practical profiles, not universal thresholds. If your current phone’s used storage is already close to the next tier’s usable room, choose a larger option or plan a reliable way to offload content.

How many photos and videos fit on a phone?

A precise photo-per-GB or minutes-per-GB chart is not defensible without naming a device and its capture settings. Photo resolution and format affect file size; video adds resolution, frame rate, compression, duration, and possible editing copies. A few long or high-quality recordings can change the calculation substantially.

For ordinary use, use your current phone’s photo and video storage as a more useful baseline than a generic file count. For professional or high-bitrate capture, check the exact phone’s supported formats and settings. Apple notes that ProRes videos result in larger file sizes, and its supported recording options vary by iPhone model and capacity.

How cloud photo storage changes the calculation

Cloud storage and built-in phone storage are separate pools. Cloud services can reduce how much original media stays locally, but the phone still needs room for its operating system, apps, working data, camera capture, and anything you want offline.

iCloud Photos

With iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage, full-resolution originals are kept in iCloud while space-saving versions remain on the device as needed. Opening or editing an original may require retrieving it. This can lower the local photo-library footprint, but it is not the same as having every original stored locally. Apple’s instructions for managing photo and video storage are at Manage your photo and video storage.

Apple says a new Apple Account includes 5 GB of iCloud storage; paid iCloud+ options are available, with current plans and prices depending on region. Check Apple’s iCloud+ page for current availability and terms.

Google Photos

Google documents up to 15 GB of storage with each Google Account, shared under its account-storage rules. Backups in Original quality count toward that storage. Storage saver may resize eligible photos larger than 3 MP to 3 MP and eligible videos above 480p to 480p; exceptions and regional limitations apply. These are Google Photos service rules, not a general estimate of the size of files a phone will create. See Google’s backup quality explanation and check your account’s available space.

Before deleting items from a synchronized photo library, check the service’s current sync and deletion behavior. A cloud-backed library is not automatically a separate local archive, and deleting a synced item may affect the library rather than merely removing a device copy.

When high-quality video needs special planning

Video creators should check more than the capacity number. Apple’s ProRes guidance says recording options depend on both iPhone model and storage tier: for supported ProRes-capable iPhones, its table lists 1080p at 30 or 25 fps for 128 GB models, and 1080p at 60, 30, or 25 fps for 256 GB and larger configurations. Supported models also list 4K at 30, 25, or 24 fps; higher frame rates depend on model and, in some cases, external storage.

Apple documents direct ProRes recording to compatible external storage for specified newer Pro models, including iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, and 17 Pro workflows. Its stated minimum write speeds are 220 MB/s for ProRes 4K60 and 440 MB/s for ProRes 4K120 in the specified supported workflows. Compatibility, power, and other requirements vary by model and mode, so confirm the exact device details in Apple’s ProRes guide. These requirements do not provide a universal recording-minutes-per-gigabyte conversion.

Make the final choice

  • Choose less built-in capacity only if your current use is modest and you are comfortable managing or retrieving content.
  • Favor more capacity if you keep originals, download heavily, use large apps, or expect your library to grow substantially before upgrading.
  • For cloud-based photo workflows, account for the service’s storage allowance, quality settings, connectivity, and ongoing plan terms as well as local storage.
  • For advanced video, verify model-specific recording modes and external-storage requirements before buying.
