Choose parental-control software by matching its features to your child’s actual devices and apps—not by relying on a broad promise to keep children safe. First inventory each device and operating-system version; then decide whether you need time limits, app and site blocking, risk alerts, or a combination. Built-in controls may be enough, while third-party monitoring varies by platform and does not guarantee that every risky interaction will be detected.

Start with the devices and services your child actually uses

Make a list of the child’s phones, tablets and computers, along with their operating systems and versions. Include the browsers and social or AI apps they use. A service may offer different features on Android and iOS, and a feature available for one app may not cover another.

Before comparing products, define the job you want controls to do: reduce screen time, block particular apps or sites, receive alerts about possible risks, or combine those goals. If your main concern is restricting certain AI apps and social media, verify that the specific apps can be blocked on the child’s device. Do not assume a product’s general web-filtering or monitoring claim covers every AI service.

Separate alerts from restrictions

Monitoring and control are different capabilities. An alert may flag a message or search for a parent to review; it does not necessarily block the app, stop the interaction or limit usage. Conversely, a time limit or app block can restrict access without telling a parent what happened in a conversation.

Apple announced new child-safety features with updates to iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 on September 14, 2026. The announced tools include Ask to Browse for Safari, expanded Communication Safety protections for gore and violent content in shared media, age-tailored Time Allowances for categories including Social Media, Entertainment and Games, and a redesigned Screen Time overview. Apple says all devices in a Family Sharing group must be updated to the relevant current systems for the Screen Time update; some features vary by region, language or device model. It also discussed privacy choices for sharing a child’s age range with apps. Those descriptions refer to Apple’s announced ecosystem behavior at that time; check current account and operating-system settings for what applies to your child. Apple’s 2025 announcement

Compare vendor features by platform, not brand name

Qustodio

Qustodio’s feature page lists AI-powered alerts for concerning messages or searches and conversations during online gameplay, along with web filtering, app blocking, time limits and social monitoring. Its listed social-alert coverage differs by platform: Android includes WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and X, while the listed iOS social-message alerts cover WhatsApp and Instagram. The page lists Android 9.0 or later, iOS 15 or later, Windows 10 and up, and Chromebook support for Chromebooks with Google Play. Check the current feature and compatibility details for exceptions. Qustodio also describes its AI alert features; that is a vendor description, not independent verification of accuracy or complete coverage.

Bark

Bark says its Premium plan scans connected accounts and sends alerts for possible risks including bullying, self-harm, predatory behavior, risky app or site use, sexual content and violence. Bark describes its machine-learning approach as considering conversation context rather than individual keywords. These are Bark’s claims; independent accuracy, coverage and false-positive rates are not established here. See Bark’s monitoring description.

Ask these questions before choosing

  • Does it support every device? Confirm the exact OS version, browser and whether a Chromebook requires Google Play.
  • Does it cover the apps that matter? Ask whether monitoring uses connected accounts or on-device activity and confirm support for each social or AI service by name.
  • What can it do on each platform? Verify alerts, filters, blocks, schedules and time limits separately. A feature listed for Android may not be available on iPhone.
  • What will the child and parent see? Understand what activity data is accessed, what appears in parent alerts and how monitoring will be explained to the child. Independent comparative privacy audits were not established here.
  • What does setup require? Check permissions, account linking and maintenance demands. App or operating-system changes may affect coverage, so review settings and vendor support information over time.
  • What is the ongoing cost? Compare the relevant paid tier and renewal terms with built-in controls. Current prices have not been verified here, so confirm them directly before subscribing.
