Choose over-ear noise-canceling headphones by matching fit, noise control, battery life, connectivity, and travel features to how you will actually use them. There is no universal winner: a comfortable pair for a long commute may matter more than a lighter spec-sheet figure, while reliable multipoint switching may matter more than extra audio features at work.
Start with the way you will use them
List your main listening situations before comparing models. A useful shortlist separates the features that matter every day from those you need only occasionally.
- Travel: prioritize comfortable long-session fit, effective noise control for your surroundings, ANC-on battery life, portability, and a wired or airplane-audio option if your setup calls for it.
- Work: consider call quality, microphone performance, multipoint connection for switching between a phone and computer, and whether you need to hear nearby conversation or announcements.
- Everyday listening: consider comfort across varied sessions, battery and charging habits, device compatibility, app features, and a sound signature you enjoy.
Noise cancellation and comfort often lead a buyer’s priorities; one recent university-buyer discussion used those priorities alongside call quality and reliability, but that single discussion is anecdotal, not a representative survey.
Check fit in person when possible
Over-ear headphones can differ in clamp pressure, ear-cup depth and size, heat, and how well they accommodate glasses. These details determine whether a pair remains comfortable through a lecture, flight, or workday. Weight is useful for comparison, but it cannot establish personal comfort: try a pair for long enough to notice pressure and heat if you can.
#1 Best Overall
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
Published weights provide a reference point, not a comfort verdict. Sony lists the WH-1000XM6 at approximately 8.96 oz, Bose lists the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) at 0.583 lb, and Apple lists AirPods Max 2 at 386.2 g (13.6 oz). Each figure is the manufacturer’s specification.
Choose noise control for your environment
Think about the sounds you most want to reduce and whether you also need an ambient or transparency mode to hear announcements and conversation. Feature descriptions are not independent comparative tests, so do not assume that a listed ANC feature proves one model performs better than another in your environment. If possible, try headphones in the kinds of surroundings where you expect to use them.
Compare battery claims on equivalent terms
Look specifically for playback time with ANC enabled. Headline battery figures may use different settings and test conditions, so manufacturer claims are not a standardized cross-brand comparison.
| Model | Published ANC-on playback claim | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | Up to 30 hours | Sony’s continuous music playback specification with noise cancellation on. |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | Up to 30 hours; up to 23 hours with Immersive Audio on | Bose states the 30-hour figure with ANC on and Immersive Audio off, and 23 hours with both on. Bose says testing was conducted in April 2025 on production-representative headphones. |
| Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless | Up to 60 hours | Sennheiser’s Bluetooth playback claim with ANC, tested using an iPhone at mid volume. Its method is not directly comparable to every other brand’s. |
Charging behavior can matter as much as the maximum runtime. Bose says a 15-minute charge can provide up to 2.5 hours in the specified configuration of ANC on and Immersive Audio off. Its 2025 product release also describes charging during use via USB-C.
Check travel details beyond weight
Look at whether the headphones fold, what case is included, whether they can play audio passively or by cable, and whether an airplane adapter is useful for your particular seat and audio setup. In its MOMENTUM 4 Wireless listing, Sennheiser includes a carry case, USB-C cable, 3.5 mm-to-2.5 mm audio cable, and airplane adapter. That package detail should not be assumed for other models.
Rank #2
- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLING (ANC): block distractions at work, on flights or during your daily commute. Or use Transparency mode to let the sounds of your environment mix in with your music.
- SEAMLESS WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: One-touch pairing with Apple & Android for easy switching across devices.
- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
Sony lists passive operation and includes a carrying case, connection cable, and USB cable with the WH-1000XM6. Check the package for the exact model and region you plan to buy; included accessories can affect how convenient a pair is for your trip.
For work, verify calls and device switching
Check call and microphone performance against your actual needs, especially if you take meetings in noisy spaces. Multipoint lets supported headphones connect to more than one device, which can simplify moving between a computer and phone. Sony lists multipoint for the WH-1000XM6, and Bose’s 2025 product release describes Bluetooth 5.4 multipoint for the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). Confirm how device switching works with your devices before treating it as a must-have.

Match connectivity to your devices and preferences
Bluetooth version, supported codecs, wired connections, and app features can help narrow a shortlist, but a codec does not guarantee better sound in every combination of source, device, and listening preference. Apple says AirPods Max 2 support lossless and ultra-low-latency audio over USB-C; they also work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, although Apple warns that some functions may be limited.
Published specifications list SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 for the Sony WH-1000XM6; SBC, AAC, aptX, and aptX Adaptive for the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless. Consider whether your phone and computer support the connections or features you intend to use, then prioritize listening comfort and sound preference over a codec list alone.

Quick Recap
A practical shortlist checklist
- Rank your settings: decide whether travel, work, or everyday listening is the primary use.
- Test fit: check pressure, cup depth, glasses comfort, and heat during a session close to your intended listening duration.
- Set a battery threshold: compare ANC-on claims and keep each maker’s stated conditions attached to the number.
- Check essential features: verify multipoint, calls, ambient mode, wired or passive use, and device compatibility as needed.
- Inspect the travel package: confirm case, cable, folding behavior, and whether an airplane adapter is included for the exact model.
- Compare local prices: decide whether the features you will use justify the current price, rather than relying on an unverified or outdated price.
