Choose noise-cancelling headphones by how well they handle the noise you actually face—not by the ANC label alone. For commuting and flights, look for model-specific evidence about engine rumble; for work, weigh microphone quality and device switching; and for every use, check fit, ANC-on battery life, and portability.

Start with the noise you need to reduce

Active noise cancellation (ANC) varies by model. Bus, train, and aircraft cabins often produce persistent low-frequency engine noise, so seek reviews that assess that kind of sound specifically rather than relying on a general claim that a headphone has ANC.

Example What the cited review reports What that means for choosing
Sennheiser PXC 550-II RTINGS reports effective reduction of bus and plane engine noise. [RTINGS review] A relevant example to consider if transit engine rumble is your main concern.
Skullcandy Hesh ANC The review reports difficulty reducing bus and plane engine rumble. [RTINGS review] ANC presence does not guarantee strong suppression of low-frequency transit noise.
JBL Live 460NC RTINGS reports weaker reduction of bass-range engine noise. [RTINGS review] Check whether a model’s limitations align with the noise you most want to reduce.

These are examples from individual reviews, not a current market-wide ranking or a universal verdict. Treat them as evidence about the named models, not a guarantee that every headphone in a brand or product family will behave the same way.

Check fit and comfort for the time you will wear them

A headphone that feels fine for a short try-on may become uncomfortable on a long flight or workday. Reviews describe the PXC 550-II as comfortably padded, while the Hesh ANC is described as comfortable; the JBL Live 460NC may feel tight or fatiguing to some listeners. Fit is personal; one reviewer’s comfort assessment cannot predict yours.

Compare battery life in the mode you will use

Look for endurance figures with ANC enabled if you plan to keep noise cancellation on. A maker’s maximum or an ANC-off figure may not match your real use. For true wireless earbuds, distinguish playback time per charge from total listening time: the case can recharge the earbuds between sessions, but that requires taking them out.

RTINGS reports 3.5 hours of continuous ANC-on playback for the SoundPeats H3, with a charging case available for recharging between uses. [RTINGS review] That is a model-specific review result, not a general estimate for ANC earbuds.

Other cited examples illustrate why battery claims should be compared carefully: RTINGS reports 27 hours for the Sony WH-1000XM3 and around 24 hours of continuous use for the Skullcandy Hesh ANC. Match the form factor to your commute and travel

True wireless earbuds are compact and easy to carry. Over-ear headphones can offer longer continuous playback and a comfortable padded fit, but may take up more room. Consider where you will store them, how long you will wear them, and whether you can tolerate charging-case breaks or prefer one continuous listening session.

The Sennheiser PXC 550-II review describes its fit as comfortable and its battery life as long, while also calling the headphones somewhat bulky. The Sony WH-1000XM3 review describes it as comfortable and suitable for commuting and travel, with effective ANC. These are reviewed examples, not current-generation recommendations. For work, check calls and switching between devices

If you move between a phone and a computer, confirm that the headphones support multipoint pairing and that it works with your devices. Multipoint can make switching between two connected devices more convenient, but do not assume every ANC headphone includes it: RTINGS says the Sony WH-1000XM3 cannot connect to more than one device simultaneously, while its JBL Live 460NC review describes multi-device pairing. Microphone performance is a separate purchase criterion from noise cancellation. In an April 2026 RTINGS comparison of the Soundcore Liberty 4 NC and EarFun Air Pro 3, Soundcore blocks more bass-range noise and lasts longer per charge, while EarFun has the better microphone performance. If calls matter more than transit rumble, the trade-off may favor the EarFun; if bass-range noise reduction and per-charge endurance matter more, the comparison favors Soundcore. [RTINGS comparison]

Use a short checklist before you buy

  1. Name your main noise: engine rumble on transit, general cabin noise, or voices in a shared workspace.
  2. Find model-specific evidence: prefer reviews that discuss the noise profile and use case you care about.
  3. Try the fit: assess comfort over the duration you expect to wear the headphones, including with glasses if relevant.
  4. Compare ANC-on endurance: check whether the figure applies per charge, includes case recharges, or comes from manufacturer specifications.
  5. Check work features: confirm multipoint support and look for microphone assessments if you take calls.
  6. Consider carry and breaks: decide whether over-ear bulk or earbud charging interruptions fit your routine.
