For flights, prioritize independently tested reduction of low-frequency engine rumble, a comfortable fit you can wear for hours, and battery life that covers your travel day with noise cancellation on. Then check how the headphones connect to seatback entertainment. Over-ear headphones and earbuds can both work; comfort, fit, and how much space you want to save should decide between them.
What matters most in headphones for a flight?
Active noise cancellation (ANC) is especially useful against the steady, low-frequency rumble common in an aircraft cabin. RTINGS says ANC headphones reduce this sound more effectively than passive isolation alone. That does not mean they will make a cabin silent: compare independent assessments of engine and cabin noise rather than relying only on a manufacturer’s general noise-canceling label.
- Comfort over time: Consider earpad depth, clamping force, headband pressure, heat, and how the headphones feel with glasses. A reviewer’s fit experience may not match yours, so try them on if possible.
- Battery with ANC enabled: Compare the stated runtime with your longest travel day, including layovers. Check whether a number is a manufacturer claim or a reviewer’s measured result.
- Portability and protection: Check weight, folding design, packed size, and whether a protective case is included. A model that does not fold may take up more room in your bag.
- Entertainment compatibility: Look for wired audio support or plan to use a compatible Bluetooth transmitter if the seatback system has a headphone jack.
Over-ear headphones or earbuds?
Over-ear headphones may suit travelers who prefer a padded fit for long listening sessions. Earbuds take up less space and may be easier to pack. Neither style is best for everyone: fit and personal comfort matter, and ANC performance varies by model. If you are unsure, try the shape and fit before choosing rather than assuming a smaller or larger design will be comfortable for you.

| Model | Flight-relevant evidence | Trade-off to consider |
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | RTINGS’ travel guide, updated July 28, 2026, names it its best travel headphones. RTINGS reports close to 32 hours with ANC enabled and says it supports wired connection to in-flight entertainment systems with an audio jack. SoundGuys measured 37 hours 14 minutes in its battery test and reports a detachable 3.5 mm cable. It folds into an included hard-shell case, according to RTINGS. | RTINGS notes relatively shallow earpads may be less comfortable for some people during extended wear. The battery figures differ by reviewer and should not be combined as if measured under one protocol. |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | Bose says the over-ear model offers up to 24 hours of battery life, and highlights plush cushions, light weight, ANC, and Aware Mode for hearing announcements. SoundGuys reports 30 hours per charge in its listing. RTINGS says the Bose accommodates a wider range of head and ear shapes than the Sony. | These battery numbers come from different sources and are not directly comparable. RTINGS says Sony’s noise isolation is stronger in its comparison, so the Bose may suit someone who prioritizes fit over that advantage. |
| Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless | SoundGuys reports 56 hours 21 minutes in its battery test and says an airplane adapter is included for use with the detachable cable. It describes the ANC as useful, though not class-leading. | It does not fold at its hinges, which may make packing less convenient. |
RTINGS’ 2026 travel guide also compares the JBL Live 780NC, Anker Soundcore Space Q45, and Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024 as lower-priced options. Compare their isolation, comfort, case protection, and battery against your priorities; do not assume they match every premium model in performance or comfort. Prices and local stock change, so check current listings before buying.
How to use headphones with seatback entertainment
Seatback audio connections vary by aircraft. Some systems use a wired headphone jack; do not assume every plane offers Bluetooth or the same jack arrangement.

- Check the headphone’s wired options. Confirm whether it accepts a 3.5 mm cable or another audio connection, and whether the cable is included. RTINGS says the Sony WH-1000XM6 can connect by wire to in-flight systems with an audio jack; SoundGuys reports a detachable cable and included airplane adapter with the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless.
- Check what the aircraft connection requires. If you can, confirm the seatback port and plug arrangement for your flight. An adapter is useful only if it matches both the seatback jack and your headphones.
- Consider a Bluetooth transmitter if you want wireless listening. Bose says a transmitter such as AirFly Pro can plug into a seatback jack and pair with wireless headphones. Verify compatibility for the transmitter and headphones before departure; this route still depends on a suitable wired jack being available.
- Check what is in the box before buying accessories. Some models include a cable or airplane adapter. Buy a separate adapter only if the included connection does not fit the aircraft system you expect to use.
How to make the final choice
- Set your priority: choose between stronger cabin-noise reduction, a fit that feels comfortable for hours, longer runtime, or a smaller packed footprint.
- Compare independent reviews: focus on low-frequency rumble performance and note the reviewer’s comfort caveats.
- Check travel-day runtime: look for ANC-on battery figures and keep manufacturer claims separate from independent test results.
- Confirm your entertainment setup: check wired support, included cables and adapters, and the seatback jack if you plan to watch or listen through the aircraft system.
- Verify packing and current availability: check folding design, case protection, current model details, local stock, and price before purchase.
