Choose your running surface and the kind of runs you do first, then compare cushioning and support, and finally try on the specific shoe. Nike positions Structure for supportive cushioning, Pegasus for responsive cushioning, and Vomero for maximum cushioning—but those labels are starting points, not prescriptions based on your arch or gait.

Start with where and how you run

Choose the surface you run on most often before comparing shoe families. Nike’s shoe finder separates road, trail, and track, as well as everyday running, race-day, and trail-running use. Its categories can help narrow the search, but they do not determine which shoe will fit your feet best. Nike’s shoe finder can help match options to your running style; available choices may vary by market.

  • Road: Start with road-running shoes if most of your miles are on pavement or other maintained, relatively even surfaces.
  • Trail: Trail shoes are designed for uneven ground. Nike’s guide describes durable soles and grippy tread; a rock plate may be useful on especially rocky or steep routes. Check the specific shoe’s construction and intended terrain rather than assuming every trail shoe offers the same protection. Nike’s guide to running-shoe types
  • Track: Select track as your surface in the finder and look for a shoe intended for the workouts you plan to do there.

Next, identify the job the shoe will do. Daily mileage, long runs, recovery runs, and speed sessions can call for different ride preferences. If you want one pair for several types of running, prioritize the surface and sessions that make up most of your use, then make sure the shoe still feels comfortable for the rest.

Use foot shape and gait as clues—not diagnoses

Pronation is the inward rolling motion of the foot as you run, and some pronation is normal. Nike’s fit guidance associates stability shoes with overpronation and neutral cushioned shoes with underpronation; it also suggests that runners with flat feet may prefer more support, while many high-arched runners do well in neutral shoes. These are broad starting points, not an individualized assessment or a guarantee that a shoe will prevent injury. Nike’s running-shoe fit guide

  • Flywire cables provide a supportive feel when you tighten the laces.
  • Plush foam midsole cushions each step.
  • Grooves on the rubber outsole help your foot move naturally.

Outsole wear can offer another clue. Nike’s older guide says wear along the inner edge may suggest overpronation, while wear along the outer edge may suggest supination. Wear patterns alone cannot establish what shoe you need. If you use them to shortlist options, judge the actual shoe by its comfort and secure fit.

Don’t choose solely by labels such as “flat feet,” “high arches,” “overpronation,” or “neutral.” A foot type can inform what you try, but it does not replace comparing the intended use, feel, and fit of the shoe.

Compare Nike’s cushioning and support categories

Nike’s current running page describes three familiar road-running families by their cushioning emphasis. Treat these as Nike’s category positioning, not as a direct performance ranking or evidence that one family suits every runner with a particular gait. Nike Running

Nike family Nike’s stated positioning How to use the label
Structure Supportive cushioning Try it if you want a more support-oriented feel, then assess comfort and security on your foot.
Pegasus Responsive cushioning Try it if a responsive feel appeals to you, including for regular running or workouts where that ride suits your preference.
Vomero Maximum cushioning Try it if you prefer a more cushioned feel; confirm that the fit and ride work for your runs.

Nike’s general guide suggests more support for long runs, a lighter shoe for speed or racing, and more supportive footwear for recovery runs. Those are broad selection ideas, not independently established comparisons between Structure, Pegasus, and Vomero. Check the current model’s specifications and intended use before buying, especially if weight is important to you.

Try on the actual shoe and check these fit points

Comfort at the try-on matters more than hoping an uncomfortable shoe will eventually break in. Nike Running Club coach Chris Bennett puts it plainly: “If your shoes are uncomfortable, you’re going to anticipate that discomfort with every footfall,” according to Nike’s fit guide.

  • Toe room: You should be able to wiggle your toes, with about a thumb-width of space in front of them.
  • Secure heel: The heel should feel snug without slipping as you walk or jog.
  • No pressure or hot spots: Notice pinching, rubbing, or pressure points immediately; don’t assume they will disappear after repeated runs.
  • Try at a realistic time: Feet can swell, so Nike advises trying shoes later in the day or after activity.

Try the size and specific model you intend to use rather than relying on a foot-type category to predict fit. If you are uncertain, Nike’s finder can narrow options, and Nike’s general guide notes that store staff may offer suggestions or gait analysis. Those retailer services are fitting resources, not medical assessments. Nike’s USATF-certified running coach Jason Fitzgerald says, “Only experience and a lot of trial and error will help runners understand their preferences and the type of shoe they prefer,” in that guide.

Reassess shoes as they wear

Nike’s fit guide, citing Welch, gives 300–500 miles as a typical running-shoe replacement range. It says the range varies with running style and recommends paying attention to how the shoes feel; it is not a guaranteed lifespan or a fixed replacement deadline. Use changes in comfort and visible wear as reasons to reassess the shoe rather than relying on mileage alone.
