Choose living room furniture colors by starting with the decor and finishes that will stay, then decide whether a new sofa or chair should blend in or become a focal point. Coordinate undertones, check the color in the room’s light, and compare a physical upholstery sample with your rug, flooring, and woodwork when one is available.

Start with the colors and finishes that are staying

Before choosing upholstery, note the room’s established elements: a favorite rug, artwork, curtains, cushions, flooring, wood furniture, fireplace, and other fixed finishes. These provide a more reliable starting point than choosing a fabric color in isolation. Sherwin-Williams recommends using a favorite rug, artwork, or fabric as a guide in an already furnished room, and accounting for permanent features and wood undertones (Sherwin-Williams’ color-selection guidance).

Pick out the colors that repeat, and notice whether the wood and other finishes read warm, cool, or neutral. You do not need to match every item exactly. The goal is to identify a few existing colors and undertones that a substantial new piece can either support or deliberately contrast with.

Decide whether the furniture should blend in or lead

A sofa or large chair occupies enough visual space to influence the room’s whole palette. If your rug and artwork are already patterned or colorful, a quieter upholstery color can give them room to stand out. If the room’s existing pieces are restrained, a colored sofa or chair can provide a focal point. These are useful design options, not fixed rules: choose according to the balance you want.

Ask yourself which item you want people to notice first. If the answer is the rug or artwork, look for upholstery that relates to it without competing. If you want the furniture to lead, choose a color that stands apart while still making sense beside the room’s finishes.

Coordinate undertones as well as surface colors

Color names alone do not tell you whether two finishes will feel cohesive. A beige may read warm or cool; a gray can have a warm or cool cast. Check whether upholstery, wood, flooring, and nearby fabrics share compatible warm, cool, or neutral undertones. Dulux’s sofa guidance recommends identifying upholstery undertones, and interior designer Jill Tran of Tran + Thomas Design Studio advises using colors with the same undertones when creating a complementary palette (Homes & Gardens’ color-scheme guidance).

Related undertones can help different surface colors sit together without requiring an exact color match. If a candidate fabric looks appealing on its own but seems out of place beside the wood or floor, compare the undertones before ruling it in or out.

Choose the kind of color relationship you want

A color wheel can help you explore how a furniture color relates to the colors already in the room. Dulux describes it as a tool for choosing hues and building schemes (Dulux’s guide to using the colour wheel). Consider these three approaches:

  • Tonal: Stay within one color family, varying the shade or depth for a calm, closely related palette.
  • Analogous: Choose colors near each other on the wheel for a related palette with more variation than a single-color scheme.
  • Complementary: Pair colors opposite each other on the wheel for stronger contrast. Use this when you want a livelier effect, and consider how much contrast feels right for the room.

These relationships are starting points rather than formulas. A neutral sofa can still have an undertone that connects it to a colorful room; a bolder piece can work when its contrast feels intentional and the surrounding elements support it.

Check the furniture color in the room’s light and layout

Natural light can change how a color appears, so judge a candidate in the room rather than relying only on a screen or showroom impression. Look at it near the floor, rug, wood, and artwork it will sit beside. Also consider the rest of the home: in an open-plan space, coordinated undertones can connect the living room to adjacent rooms without making every space an exact match. BEHR Canada’s living-room guidance includes natural light, furniture, rugs, flooring, fireplaces, and art among the elements to consider (BEHR Canada’s living-room color guidance).

Compare candidates with a simple checklist

When you are deciding between upholstery colors, assess each one against the same questions rather than relying on memory:

  • Does its undertone relate to the wood, flooring, and other fixed finishes?
  • Does it harmonize with the rug and artwork, or create the degree of contrast you want?
  • How does it look in the room’s natural light and beside the materials around it?
  • Does it support the atmosphere you want: quiet and cohesive, or more vivid and focal?

Comparing two candidates side by side against the same room elements makes the trade-offs easier to see. One color may blend better with the floor, while another may connect more strongly to the rug; your choice depends on which relationship matters most to the room.

Use a physical swatch when you can

If the retailer offers fabric or leather samples, place one in the room and compare it with the rug, flooring, wood, and nearby fabrics. Ethan Allen describes upholstery swatches and the option to view materials up close at a design center (Ethan Allen’s fabric and leather information). Swatch options and services differ by retailer, so check directly with the seller. A color wheel can also help if you want to explore tonal, analogous, or complementary combinations before settling on a fabric.
