Before creating an account, check your provincial or territorial regulator’s official site to confirm that the operator and the specific gaming platform are currently authorized where you live. Then assess the account controls, responsible-gambling tools, self-exclusion coverage, and money and complaint terms. A site being available in Canada—or licensed somewhere else—does not establish that it is authorized for you.
Why authorization depends on where you live
In Canada, provinces and territories set local rules for online gambling, including minimum age, the regulator responsible, and which platforms residents may use. Eligibility can also depend on the product. Do not assume that one age rule or one list of approved platforms applies across the country.
Use your local regulator or official government platform as the final check. A national overview can help you identify the relevant authority, but it is only a starting point; confirm current rules and platform status directly with the authority for your location.
How to verify a platform before signing up
- Start at the regulator. Navigate from the official provincial or territorial government or regulator website to its current list of authorized operators or platforms. Do not treat a search ad, influencer post, bonus page, or copied licensing badge as proof.
- Match the exact operator and site. Compare the legal operator name and platform name with the official listing. Check that the listing covers the type of gaming you intend to use; an operator’s presence on a list does not automatically establish that every product or brand it runs is covered.
- Confirm your eligibility. Check the current minimum age and any other local restrictions on the regulator’s site before registering. The rule may vary by jurisdiction or product.
- Recheck close to signup. Operator directories and rules can change. Use the live official listing rather than relying on an old article, saved screenshot, or a platform’s claim about its status.
Ontario offers a useful example of an official directory: iGaming Ontario’s list identified 49 operators and 84 gaming websites, accurate as of September 1, 2026. That count describes the directory’s size, not the relative safety or quality of its listed options. Consult iGaming Ontario’s current list for an up-to-date check.

What Ontario and British Columbia examples do—and do not—show
Ontario and British Columbia illustrate why a platform’s protections must be assessed under the rules that apply in your jurisdiction. These examples are not a substitute for checking your own regulator, and they do not establish that every province or territory uses identical requirements.
| Jurisdiction | What the cited official information says | What to verify for yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | iGaming Ontario says operators must obtain Responsible Gambling Council RG Check accreditation within two years of their operating agreement and maintain it. It also says operators must have their own self-exclusion program that meets the Registrar’s Standards. | Confirm the operator’s current listing and the terms and coverage of the exclusion tool you plan to use. |
| British Columbia | B.C.’s regulations require its lottery corporation’s online platform and account-application flow to display a prominent 19+ message. They prohibit establishing an account for a minor or a self-excluded person, and require an existing account to be locked while that person is self-excluded. | These are B.C.-specific requirements. Check the current age rule and account protections that apply where you live. |
How to assess account safeguards and responsible-gambling tools
Account identity and access controls
Look for a clearly identified legal operator in the platform’s account, privacy, and terms pages. Check how the service explains age eligibility, identity verification, and account restrictions. A clear explanation is useful, but it is not proof of authorization; verify the operator through the local regulator separately.

Limits, breaks, and support
Before depositing, find out whether the platform offers deposit, loss, or time limits, a way to pause play, self-exclusion, and links to support. Check how to activate each control and when it takes effect. Do not treat the mere presence of a tool as evidence that it covers every product or operator.

Understand the exclusion boundary
Self-exclusion can apply to one site, one operator, a group of regulated online services, or a broader set of venues. Confirm the scope before relying on it. For example, OLG describes BetGuard as covering regulated digital gambling in Ontario for a period of six months to five years, and says it does not cover in-person casinos. Check OLG’s current terms for the program’s scope and process.

In a June 1, 2026 announcement, OLG described a deposit-cap measure for certain online players under 25 as engagement increases. The cap can be daily, weekly, or monthly; the announcement does not establish that it applies to every player under 25. OLG President and CEO Duncan Hannay said, “Requiring a deposit limit is not about removing choice, it’s about strengthening that choice by helping players to pause and consider what they are comfortable spending.”
What to read in the money, account, and complaint terms
Read the specific platform’s current terms before adding funds. Look for how it handles:

Only compare platforms after confirming that each is currently authorized for your location and intended product. Use the same questions for each option:
Best Value
- Fun for the whole family
- Great for ages 8+
- Value priced
- Authorization: Does the local authority list the exact operator and platform for the product you want?
- Access controls: Are age eligibility, identity checks, and account restrictions clearly explained?
- Player controls: Can you set limits, take a break, or self-exclude, and are the activation and effective-time details clear?
- Coverage: Does self-exclusion cover the site, other regulated digital services, or physical venues?
- Terms and recourse: Are payment, closure, and complaint procedures easy to find and understand?
If any key detail is unclear, check with the operator or regulator before depositing. A polished website, a large directory count, an accreditation, or a safety claim is not a substitute for confirming the platform’s status and the exact reach of its protections.
Keep the risks and your limits in view
Authorization and safeguards do not make gambling risk-free. Decide in advance what amount of money and time you can afford to spend, and use breaks or self-exclusion if they would help. If gambling is causing harm, contact a support service available in your province or territory; choose a local service whose eligibility and contact details you can verify through an official source.
