Use JPG/JPEG as a strong starting point for ecommerce product photographs: it handles complex colors and can make photographic files smaller through lossy compression. Choose the dimensions and compression by checking the image at its actual storefront size and any shopper zoom level. JPG is not right for every asset—transparent logos, icons, and crisp flat graphics often suit PNG better—and your store may deliver a JPG upload to shoppers as WebP or AVIF.
When should an ecommerce image be JPG?
JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format. It is usually a practical choice for product photography, banners, and other still images with complex colors. Shopify’s Help Center describes JPEG as ideal for photography and other still images with complex colors, including products, banners or slideshows, and page or blog images (Shopify image guidance).
JPEG uses lossy compression: it reduces file size by discarding some image information. That can be a useful trade-off for photographs, but too much compression may make details look smeared or create visible artifacts around edges. Judge the result at the sizes shoppers actually see, not only in an editor’s zoomed-in preview.

Choose another format when the image needs it
- PNG: Consider it for transparent logos, icons, or graphics with flat colors and sharp edges. PNG is often a better fit when transparency must be preserved.
- Live text: Use page text rather than embedding words in a raster image whenever possible. Text inside an image is not selectable or searchable, as web.dev notes in its image guidance.
- WebP or AVIF: These may be useful delivery formats if your ecommerce platform or image CDN generates them and serves them to compatible browsers. Their availability depends on your delivery stack; don’t assume an uploaded JPG is automatically transformed.
How to choose dimensions for product photos
Start with a source image that has enough detail for the largest intended display, then deliver appropriately sized variants for different contexts. A product-grid thumbnail does not generally need the same delivered dimensions as a full-width hero or a zoom view. Serving an oversized original to every screen can waste transfer and decoding work; serving an image that is too small can look soft when enlarged.
Use responsive image candidates or your platform’s image tools so the browser can receive an image suited to the rendered context and screen. The right candidates depend on your theme’s actual layout, breakpoints, and image crops. Check both the collection grid and product detail page, including mobile layouts, rather than choosing dimensions from a single desktop screenshot. web.dev recommends matching images to display dimensions and creating responsive candidates (web.dev image guidance).

Shopify’s documented product-image limits
For Shopify’s product and collection image flow, the Help Center states an image can be up to 5000 × 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, and the file must be smaller than 20 MB. It says a 2048 × 2048-pixel square image usually displays best for square product imagery (Shopify product media guidance). These are Shopify-specific upload guidance, not universal ecommerce standards or a target every store should serve to every shopper.
How to compress JPGs without making them look blurry
- Pick representative images. Include different product types, such as smooth surfaces, fine texture, fabric, gradients, and high-contrast edges. Compression artifacts appear differently across image content.
- Set the delivery dimensions first. Compare the image at the grid, product-page, and zoom sizes you actually use. Resizing an enormous source and then compressing it for a specific context often gives a more useful result than compressing the full original for every use.
- Export more than one candidate. Try different JPEG quality settings in your image editor or optimization workflow. There is no universal setting that guarantees the best balance for every photograph.
- Inspect at shopper-relevant sizes. Look for blockiness, ringing around edges, loss of fine texture, banding, and softness. Check any product crop and zoom behavior as well as the un-cropped source.
- Compare file weight and appearance together. Keep the smallest version that still looks acceptable in the contexts that matter. web.dev advises balancing visual quality and file size rather than relying on a generic quality number (web.dev image guidance).
Shopify’s 2026 image-size guide reports lossy WebP images as 24% to 34% smaller than JPEG at equivalent SSIM quality index (Shopify’s 2026 guide). That is a reported format comparison, not a guaranteed saving for a particular store’s photos. Actual results depend on the image and encoding choices; compare representative files in your own workflow.

Should you upload JPG or deliver WebP and AVIF?
Separate the format you upload from the format a customer’s browser receives. Shopify says its image service detects supported browser formats and can deliver WebP or AVIF. Its developer documentation recommends using built-in image features such as image_url and image_tag for responsive sizing, dimensions, focal points, format negotiation, and CDN behavior. Manually constructing image URLs can bypass built-in optimizations (Shopify image_url documentation; Shopify image_tag documentation).
On Shopify, use the theme’s supported image mechanisms where applicable instead of assuming that a manually assembled URL preserves every optimization. On another platform, check its documentation and inspect the actual response. In browser developer tools, open the Network panel, reload the page, select the image request, and inspect its response headers and transferred dimensions. This shows what the storefront delivered for that browser and request; it does not prove all browsers receive the same format.

Google Search Central supports JPEG, WebP, and AVIF, and recommends responsive image techniques and descriptive filenames rather than generic names such as image1.jpg (Google image SEO guidance). A descriptive filename can identify the product and relevant variation, but the image should also appear on an appropriate product page with useful surrounding context.
A practical format and delivery checklist
- Classify the asset: photograph, transparent logo, icon, flat graphic, or text.
- Use JPG as a starting point for photographic images with complex color; consider PNG for transparency and crisp flat artwork.
- Choose source dimensions for the largest intended use, then generate or request responsive delivery sizes.
- Compare compression at real display sizes and relevant crops, including zoom if shoppers use it.
- Check whether your platform or CDN negotiates WebP or AVIF instead of assuming that it does.
- Use the platform’s built-in image transformations where available and avoid bypassing them with improvised URLs.
- Give product images descriptive filenames and ensure they are discoverable on the relevant product page.

Common problems and fixes
- The product photo looks blurry on the detail page: Check whether the delivered variant is smaller than its rendered or zoomed size. Generate a suitable larger candidate and verify the crop rather than simply serving the full original everywhere.
- The file is large despite being a JPG: JPG is not automatically small. Resize for actual display contexts, compare export settings, and check whether your platform can optimize delivery.
- A logo has a box or unwanted background: JPG does not preserve transparency. Use a format and workflow that support the required transparent background, such as PNG where appropriate.
- Edges or text look rough: Strong JPEG compression can damage high-contrast edges and fine detail. Reduce compression or use a format better suited to crisp flat artwork; keep text as live page text when possible.
- You expected WebP or AVIF but see JPEG in the browser: Verify the platform’s documented behavior and inspect the request actually served to that browser. Format negotiation can depend on the platform, CDN, request, and browser support.
- The platform rejects the upload: Check that platform’s current file-size and dimension limits. Shopify’s documented product-media limits are not rules for other services.
- Search engines see a generic image filename: Rename files descriptively before upload where practical, and make sure images are associated with the relevant product page.

Are JPG and JPEG different formats?
No. JPG and JPEG are filename extensions for the same image format.
Should every product image use the same compression setting?
Not necessarily. A finely textured fabric, a smooth bottle, and a high-contrast label may show compression changes differently. Compare a representative range of products rather than applying one setting blindly.

Does a JPG upload mean shoppers always receive a JPG?
No. Some platforms or CDNs can negotiate another format for supported browsers. Check the actual storefront response for your stack.
