Choose based on who should carry the operational work, not on a blanket assumption that self-hosting is cheaper or cloud hosting is more reliable. Self-hosting gives you more control but makes you responsible for setup, updates, security, backups, monitoring, and recovery. A managed platform takes on some of that work for a fee, while leaving you responsible for the parts of the service it does not manage.
What “self-hosted” and “cloud” mean
Self-hosted does not necessarily mean owning a server. It can mean running an application on a computer you control, or renting a virtual private server (VPS) and managing its operating system and application yourself. A VPS provider supplies the virtual machine; it does not automatically administer everything you install on it.
“Cloud” is not one level of service. Amazon Web Services (AWS) distinguishes infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and software as a service (SaaS). With IaaS, the customer manages the operating system and applications. With PaaS, the provider manages infrastructure, the operating system, and runtime, while the customer remains responsible for code, data, and configuration. With SaaS, the provider manages the ready-to-use application layer as well. The exact division of work depends on the service. AWS’s IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS explainer describes these distinctions.
So the practical comparison is often self-managed hosting versus a managed application platform—not “your hardware versus the cloud.” You can also use a hybrid arrangement, keeping a particular workload or data set under closer control while using managed services elsewhere.

What changes when you self-host
You take on the operating work
With a self-managed server, you are responsible for getting the application running and keeping it healthy. That can include deploying updates, applying security patches, arranging backups, monitoring availability, troubleshooting failures, and restoring service or data after a problem. If the server is physically at home or in an office, hardware, power, and internet connectivity become part of your setup too.
These duties do not disappear just because the server is rented. A provider may maintain the underlying physical infrastructure, but on a self-managed VPS you generally remain responsible for the operating system and the software you run. For example, PocketBase Cloud’s provider-authored comparison describes OS patching, security, backup scheduling, off-site copies, and restore tests as VPS operator responsibilities. PocketBase Cloud’s comparison is an example for its product context, not a rule that every VPS or application has identical requirements.
You gain configuration control, not automatic portability
Managing the operating system can give you more freedom over configuration and tools, particularly when you have administrative access to the machine. But control alone does not make an application easy to move. Portability also depends on the app’s architecture, data formats, and the deployment and operational tools it relies on.

You may still need to plan for growth and failure
A single server may need manual resizing as demand increases. If you need redundancy or failover, you must design and maintain the extra pieces rather than assuming one machine will provide them. Self-hosting can work well for a stable workload, but a single server is still a single point of failure unless you plan otherwise.
What a managed platform takes off your plate
A managed application platform can reduce the infrastructure and runtime work you do yourself. The scope varies: one service may handle provisioning and backups, while another expects you to configure or operate those features. Read the service’s documentation to see exactly what it manages and what remains your responsibility.
Laravel Cloud, for example, says its service handles server provisioning, scaling, security, databases, caching, SSL, and backups. That is a vendor’s description of its own framework-specific platform, not a feature list that applies to every managed host. Its comparison with a self-hosted VPS is useful for identifying the kinds of tasks to check. Laravel Cloud’s documentation explains its offering.

Managed hosting can also make scaling simpler when a service provides suitable capacity and scaling features. It does not guarantee that your particular application will scale well, stay available, or recover from every failure. Those results depend on the service, plan, configuration, and application design.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The trade-off is less control over the underlying stack and potential limits on configuration, in exchange for less infrastructure work. Fees may be subscriptions or usage-based charges, and included capacity differs by plan. Compare the full trade-offs
| Decision factor | Local or self-managed hosting | Managed cloud platform |
|---|---|---|
| Operating responsibility | You handle setup and ongoing administration. Local hosting also involves hardware, power, and connectivity. | The provider handles some infrastructure or runtime work, depending on whether the service is PaaS or SaaS. Your remaining duties depend on the service. |
| Direct costs | Hardware or server rent, storage, connectivity, and any paid administration. | Subscription or usage charges; included capacity and plan terms vary. |
| Your time | Patching, backups, monitoring, deployment, troubleshooting, and recovery take your time. | Less infrastructure work can leave more time for the business, but platform boundaries and support limits still matter. |
| Control and portability | More control over the operating system and configuration, especially with administrative access. Portability still depends on app design, data formats, and tooling. | Less control over the underlying stack; integrations and managed operations can reduce day-to-day work. |
| Scaling and availability | A single server may need manual resizing and extra design work for redundancy or failover. | A provider may offer scaling and distributed infrastructure; exact behavior depends on architecture and plan. |
| Data and compliance | Can suit specific control or location needs, but you must implement and demonstrate safeguards. | May support compliance needs, subject to the provider, service, configuration, and applicable obligations. |
How to decide as a solopreneur
A useful question is, “when does it make sense to self-host vs just using something managed?” One participant in a r/SideProject discussion framed the choice around how often a tool would be used, how much maintenance time the operator could spare, whether data sensitivity was a real concern, and whether the workload could run on low-power hardware or a low-cost VPS. That is an individual discussion, not a representative survey. Read the discussion.

Start with managed hosting when operations could distract from the business
Managed hosting is a sensible starting point when customers depend on the application, downtime would be costly, demand is uncertain, or your time is better spent building and selling than administering servers. These are decision guidelines, not a guarantee that a managed service will meet your availability or scaling needs. Check its specific capabilities, limits, and responsibilities.
Consider self-managed hosting when the control is worth the work
Self-managed hosting may fit when you have the skills and interest to operate it, the workload is stable, you have a concrete need for control, and the cost of administration, backups, and recovery is acceptable. Count your time as a real cost. There is no established universal break-even price that proves self-hosting is cheaper once the operator’s time is included.
Use a hybrid approach when only part of the workload needs special treatment
If a particular component or data set needs closer control, you may be able to keep that part self-managed and use a managed service for other work. AWS says business needs, budget, compliance requirements, and long-term technology strategy help determine the right infrastructure “on a case-by-case basis.” AWS’s comparison of on-premises and cloud infrastructure discusses hybrid computing and the factors involved.

Price the setup you will actually run
For a rough reference, TechRadar Pro reported in 2026 that a small VPS suitable for several lightweight self-hosted apps typically costs $5–$20 per month, depending on provider and specifications. The same article put a single SaaS tool at $20–$60 per month, with amounts varying by vendor and plan. These are journalistic indicative ranges, not current quotes or a universal comparison. Read TechRadar Pro’s 2026 account.
A separate, provider-authored PocketBase Cloud comparison, published in September 2026, described entry-level VPS hosting as about $4–$6 per month and listed PocketBase Cloud tiers at $0, $10, and $25. Those figures describe that provider’s comparison at that date; they are not market-wide prices and may change. Check PocketBase Cloud’s current page for its own current offering.
To make a useful comparison, price the app and expected usage you actually have. Include server or plan charges, storage, backups, any needed recovery arrangements, and the value of the time you would spend administering the system. Compare current plan limits and backup or support terms directly; the figures above do not establish a general break-even point.

When local hardware is relevant
A mini PC for a home server is one possible route if you specifically want to run a workload on local hardware. It is optional: a self-managed VPS uses rented hardware, and a managed platform does not require you to buy a server. Choosing local hosting also makes power, connectivity, and physical equipment part of the operating arrangement.
