Choose horse racing betting software by checking what it does, whether its selections or wagers are recorded before the race, how every outcome is settled, and what the published performance figures actually measure. A public record can show what a provider says it recorded; it does not, by itself, prove independent verification or future profit.
First identify what kind of software you are evaluating
“Betting software” can mean either a system that accepts and settles wagers or a service that analyzes races, publishes selections, or keeps a results ledger. Those are different products with different evidence and regulatory questions.
- Wagering systems: Licensed facilities use these systems to accept and settle bets. Applicable controls depend on the jurisdiction and product. Virginia’s rules for covered historical-racing facilities, for example, address past-performance information, approved wager and payout details, financial reporting, independent testing, integrity-auditor access, and responsible-gaming measures. Virginia administrative code
- Analysis, tipping, or recordkeeping services: These rank horses, publish picks, or display performance histories. A vendor’s methodology page does not establish that the service is a regulated wagering system or that its record has been independently audited.
Model rules from the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) are not automatically law everywhere; their adoption and effect depend on the jurisdiction. ARCI model rules Do not mistake regulatory testing of a wagering terminal for proof that a separate tipster’s record is profitable, or a public picks ledger for regulatory testing of a wagering system.

1. Verify picks were recorded before the race
Look for a permanent or independently time-stamped record showing the selection, market, advised price, and publication time before the race. Check whether the provider retains the original available price instead of substituting a later one. Algohorse says it logs selections before the off at the price available and grades them afterward; Winsmore says it publishes selections and settles them to Betfair Starting Price (BSP). These are useful features to look for, but the descriptions are vendor claims unless independently verified. Algohorse methodology Winsmore methodology

2. Check that losses and awkward outcomes stay visible
A credible ledger should include all selections, not only winners, and explain how it handles losing runs, non-runners, voids, abandoned races, dead heats, and corrections. The methodology should state which entries count in each metric’s denominator. Lay Picks, for example, says settled results—not pending rows or voids—determine its strike-rate denominator, and notes that strike rate needs liability context. Lay Picks results methodology
3. Demand definitions behind performance numbers
A strike rate is the proportion of selections that win under the stated grading rules; it is not a profit measure. For ROI, ask for the stake denominator, stake sizing, odds source, settlement rules, and deductions such as exchange commission. Also ask whether the record is prospective live performance, back-testing, simulation, or paper calculation, and whether it includes every signal or only a selected tier.

The UK Gambling Commission describes turnover as gross stakes before costs or winnings and reports betting profit as gross gambling yield (GGY); those measures should not be casually treated as interchangeable. UK Gambling Commission reporting guidance

4. Inspect the model in outline
A provider can protect proprietary code while still explaining its data inputs, geographic scope, time period, update cadence, selection rules, and validation method. Algohorse describes UK and Irish historical data, pre-race logging, automatic grading, and walk-forward validation—training on the past and evaluating on later seasons. It also says its model does not beat the closing price, but claims an advantage against the morning market. Those statements should be assessed against the service’s public record. Algohorse methodology
Winsmore says its factors include recent form, speed under conditions, trainer, jockey, draw, and other race-specific features, while keeping exact weights proprietary. It identifies lightly raced or unexposed horses as a weakness. Explicit limitations help you judge whether a model’s coverage fits the races you follow. Winsmore methodology

5. Establish whether verification is independent—and what it covers
Ask who performed any audit, which raw records they could inspect, the period and sample covered, whether the report applies to the software version currently offered, and whether the findings are public. Virginia’s rules for covered historical-racing systems provide an example of stronger controls: independent laboratory testing and access for an integrity auditor who can extract actual data and compare management reports with source information. Those requirements are specific to covered facilities; they do not automatically apply to analytics subscriptions or other jurisdictions. Virginia administrative code

6. Review terms, jurisdiction, and commercial disclosures
Check the service’s terms, age and location restrictions, responsible-gambling information, and any bookmaker or affiliate relationships. True Overlay says bookmaker links remain hidden unless relationship, campaign, jurisdiction, disclosure, and age requirements are approved, and that compensation would appear beside an enabled affiliate link. This is an example of disclosure language, not an endorsement. True Overlay disclosures

Compare providers on equivalent terms
Use the same questions for each option rather than ranking services by a headline ROI or strike rate. Record the answers side by side, and mark unknowns as unknown rather than filling gaps with assumptions.
| Comparison axis | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Pre-event record | Are picks time-stamped before the race? Are original prices and market details retained, and can the record be altered? |
| Completeness and settlement | Are wins, losses, voids, non-runners, abandoned races, dead heats, and corrections handled under stated rules? |
| Metrics and prices | Are stake sizing, odds source, commission, deductions, and live-versus-modeled status disclosed? |
| Model and data | Are inputs, geography, update process, selection rules, validation approach, and limitations explained? |
| Independent evidence | Who checked the record, what data and period were covered, and does the review apply to this product and version? |
| Product fit | Is it a wagering system or an analysis service? Are jurisdiction, support, and current price clear? |
What public provider pages can—and cannot—show
The figures below are vendor descriptions or snapshots, not independently audited performance evidence. Counts and displayed results can change; verify the current pages before relying on them.
| Service | What its page says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Algohorse | It describes 38 years of UK and Irish results, 3.8 million runner records, and more than 400,000 races. It says selections are logged before the off, publicly graded, and walk-forward validated. | These are vendor-reported database and methodology details, not independent verification. The service also describes a limitation around closing prices. Source |
| Winsmore | It describes training data from more than 90,000 UK races and over 800,000 individual runs since 2020, with Betfair pricing data going back to 2015, and reports more than 900 selections every month. Its page displays 31/72 NAP, 56/179 Dual Specialist, and 695/2,751 Backs selections alongside strike rate and ROI; figures update daily. | Data scale and activity are vendor-reported. The selection figures are a changing snapshot accessed in 2026, not independently audited results. Winsmore says past performance does not guarantee future results. Source |
| HRR Pro Ratings | Its methodology page says ratings refresh daily and presents a public track record. It says, “We don’t claim it makes you money.” | Vendor-authored methodology and limitation statement; neither establishes independent verification or profitability. Source |
| True Overlay | It separates source data, generated analysis, market information, and demonstrated performance, and says its performance ledger is platform-controlled rather than independently proofed. | Useful disclosure about the boundaries of its own ledger, not third-party validation. Source |
These examples cannot support a controlled cross-provider ranking or a claim that any named service will produce future profit. Compare the evidence and definitions, not just the displayed outcomes.

Make the decision without treating the record as a promise
A transparent track record is evidence about what a provider recorded and how it says it settled those records. It is not a guarantee that the selections can be placed at the displayed prices, that an independent party verified the numbers, or that future results will match the past. Favor services that make those limits easy to see, explain their methods and settlement rules, and distinguish measured outcomes from modeled ones.
