For a home in Alberta, Saskatchewan, or Manitoba, choose a roof by verifying the exact covering’s impact-test classification, confirming that the complete roof system suits the house, and checking local rules and insurance terms before signing. UL 2218 Class 4 is the highest class in that test; it is evidence from a controlled impact test, not a promise that hail cannot damage the roof.

Why hail resistance matters on the Prairies

Hailstorms affect parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Government of Canada guidance recommends considering impact-resistant roofing in areas with moderate to high hail risk and consulting a roofing specialist about suitable materials and methods. Government of Canada hail guidance.

The risk varies by location, and no roof covering makes a home immune to storm damage. Alberta homeowners may also weigh the scale of prior losses: the Insurance Bureau of Canada reported in 2026 that major hailstorms had caused more than $8 billion in insured damage in Alberta over the preceding decade. Insurance Bureau of Canada.

What Class 4 means—and what it does not

UL 2218 classifies roof-covering materials based on impact testing with steel balls. In GAF’s description of the test, Class 3 uses a 1.75-inch ball dropped from 17 feet, while Class 4 uses a 2-inch ball dropped from 20 feet. Class 4 is the highest rating in this classification. The test examines the material’s back surface for cracks, tears, or fractures; it does not reproduce every hailstone size, storm angle, installation condition, or aging effect. Check the rating on the exact product, not merely a brand or marketing phrase. GAF says only products sold in packages bearing the UL 2218 Class 3 or Class 4 classification statement are rated at those levels, and it does not warrant that a rated product will avoid hail damage. Ask for the manufacturer’s current technical sheet and packaging or other documentation that identifies the classification.

ICLR’s RC1 roof-cover guidance also recognizes products complying with FM 4473 Class 4. UL 2218 and FM 4473 are different standards and apply to different kinds of products, so ask the roofer to identify the relevant test for each proposed covering and provide the documentation. Compare roof-covering options as complete systems

Class 4 asphalt shingles are one option. Other materials marketed for hail resistance include concrete, clay, slate, and rubber. Aviva lists these categories as possible hail-resistant materials, but that list does not show that they have equivalent test results, cost, availability, or suitability for a particular home. There is no established neutral, directly comparable price-and-performance ranking across these material types for prairie homes. Choose based on the property and a full, itemized proposal rather than assuming that one material is universally best.

  • House and roof: Ask a qualified roofer to inspect roof pitch and geometry, decking and existing layers, ventilation, drainage, penetrations, and structural capacity for the candidate material. Weight and roof complexity can affect suitability and cost.
  • Test evidence: Compare the exact documented rating and the scope of its test. Do not treat “impact-resistant” without a named standard and product evidence as equivalent to a Class 4 classification.
  • Installation and local expertise: Confirm the proposed roof-system details, local availability, and the contractor’s experience with that material. A covering’s performance depends on more than its label.
  • Ownership trade-offs: Compare appearance, expected service life, warranty exclusions, maintenance, repairability, and any structural requirements. Ask the manufacturer and installer to explain the warranty terms for the exact product and installation.
  • Complete price: Request itemized costs for underlayment, flashing, ridge and hip details, ventilation, tear-off, disposal, and deck repairs. A covering-only figure is not the full installed roof-system cost.

Confirm building rules and permits locally

Before ordering materials, check the building-code and permit requirements with the authority having jurisdiction for the property. Provincial adoption dates do not by themselves establish all local requirements. For example, Saskatchewan states that its adoption of the 2020 National Building Code and related codes took effect January 1, 2024; this date does not determine the rules in every municipality or in Alberta and Manitoba. Ask the insurer before choosing the roof

Do not assume a Class 4 roof will reduce your premium. GAF says discounts, where available, vary by insurer and location and recommends contacting the insurance agent before installation. Some carriers may require a cosmetic-damage waiver for a discount; that can limit coverage for hail damage that does not cause a leak. Ask about the effect of any waiver before accepting it. GAF’s impact-resistant shingle information.

Ask the insurer to explain the policy’s treatment of roof age and material, hail deductibles, cosmetic damage, replacement-cost terms, endorsements, and claim settlement. Get the applicable wording for your own policy rather than relying on a general product description.
