For a mix of weightlifting, HIIT, and short cardio sessions, start with cross-training shoes: they balance a stable base with flexibility for varied movement. Choose running shoes instead if cardio means sustained running, and prioritize a firm, stable sole—or dedicated weightlifting shoes—if lifting is the main event.

What kind of shoes should you wear to the gym?

Match the shoe to the movements you do most often. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) says cross-training shoes may be a good choice for people doing many kinds of exercise during the week. That makes them a sensible first option for workouts combining weights, HIIT, and brief cardio. Adidas also describes cross-training shoes as a balance for varied workouts.

There is no single shoe that is ideal for every gym activity. Compare stability, cushioning, flexibility, and fit against your actual routine rather than choosing by category name alone.

How the main shoe types compare

Workout emphasis Shoe direction Main trade-off
Weightlifting, HIIT, and short cardio Cross-training shoes Versatile balance, but not necessarily ideal for long runs or specialized lifting. AAOS guidance and adidas guidance support cross-training for varied workouts.
Sustained running or treadmill cardio Running shoes Designed around forward motion and cushioning; less specifically tailored to lifting and lateral training. See adidas and ASICS.
Lifting is the clear priority Stable training shoes or dedicated weightlifting shoes A firm platform supports stability, while less cushioning may be less comfortable for cardio. See adidas and ASICS.

Choose by your workout’s biggest demand

For a one-pair mix of lifting, HIIT, and short cardio

Look first at cross-training shoes. HIIT can involve changing direction, bodyweight movements, and bursts of effort alongside strength work, so a shoe intended for varied workouts is a practical compromise. This is a compromise, not a guarantee that one pair will feel equally suitable for every exercise.

For sustained running or treadmill cardio

Choose running shoes when running makes up a substantial part of your routine. Running shoes are designed for repetitive forward motion, and cushioning matters for cardio. ASICS distinguishes running shoes from training shoes by their respective benefits. A running shoe may be less suited to lifting or lateral movements than a training shoe.

For lifting as the main priority

Favor a firm, stable base. Adidas advises a flat, stable sole for weight training; if lifting dominates your schedule, a stable training shoe or dedicated weightlifting shoe may suit that priority better than a cushioned running shoe. The trade-off is that a firmer, less-cushioned shoe may be less comfortable for cardio.

AIRHAS Men's Barefoot Training Shoes Zero Drop Minimalist Sneakers Anatomical Toe Design for Weightlifting and Fitness (Black, 12.0)
  • Zero Drop Profile: Designed with an even level between the heel and forefoot. This flat base encourages a more natural stance and can help support better balance during your exercises.
  • Anatomical Toe Design: Crafted to follow the natural shape of your foot. This gives your toes room to relax and spread out, which generally provides a more stable base for lifting and training.
  • Durable & Breathable Upper: Made with a lightweight, synthetic woven fabric built to resist tearing while allowing airflow. Fit Note: Because this material is quite sturdy, you might feel some stiffness where the shoe bends at first. It usually requires a brief break-in period to feel more comfortable.
  • Flexible Rubber Outsole: The rubber sole is made to bend smoothly with your foot's movements. It offers reliable grip and aims to give you a close-to-ground feel, similar to being barefoot.
  • Versatile Gym Shoe: Suitable for a wide range of fitness settings. Whether you enjoy weightlifting, cross-training, or daily gym routines, these shoes are designed to offer practical support for most indoor workouts.

Check stability, cushioning, flexibility, and fit

  • Stability for lifting: Look for a firm, stable sole rather than a soft, highly cushioned feel underfoot.
  • Cushioning for running and impact: If cardio involves sustained running or repeated impact, cushioning becomes more important.
  • Flexibility and support for varied movement: Consider whether the shoe can accommodate lateral movement and changing exercises as well as forward motion.
  • Secure, comfortable fit: AAOS advises trying shoes with the same kind of socks you wear for the sport. ASICS recommends a comfortable shoe that fits firmly around the foot.

These are qualitative comparisons, not numeric rules: the cited guidance does not set a mileage threshold, lifting-weight cutoff, or measurable point at which a shoe becomes stable or cushioned enough.

Are running shoes okay to use in the gym?

They can make sense when your gym session is mainly running or treadmill cardio. If the session includes substantial lifting, HIIT, or lateral movement, a running shoe’s forward-motion design and cushioning may be a less suitable match than a training shoe. ASICS describes training shoes as suited to weightlifting, HIIT, and bodyweight movements; adidas recommends a flat, stable sole for weight training.

When should you replace gym shoes?

Pay attention to how the shoes feel rather than relying on a universal replacement schedule. AAOS notes that cushioning can become less effective over time, even when shoes are not being used. The guidance does not give a universal replacement interval, so it does not support a fixed timeline for everyone.

How to decide

  1. List your main activities. Separate brief cardio intervals from sustained running, and note whether lifting or HIIT takes up most of your training.
  2. Pick the priority. Choose cross-training shoes for a varied routine, running shoes for sustained running, or a stable training or dedicated lifting shoe when lifting clearly dominates.
  3. Try the fit for your sport. Wear the kind of socks you use for training and check that the shoe feels comfortable while fitting securely.
  4. Reassess as your routine changes. If cardio becomes regular running or lifting takes over, the original all-purpose compromise may no longer match your needs.
