Choose gun grease by following your firearm’s manual for the exact contact point—not by picking the product with the widest temperature range. Grease can stay put on maker-approved heavy-wear areas, while some firearm makers recommend a thinner oil in cold conditions. Product temperature claims describe the lubricant, not a guarantee that a particular firearm will operate at those air temperatures.

Start with the firearm manual and the contact point

Check the manual for the specific firearm and the part you intend to lubricate. Use grease only where the manufacturer permits or specifies it; instructions for a slide, rail, bolt, hinge, or threaded connection are not interchangeable. If the manual does not answer the question, ask the firearm maker rather than applying a product based on a broad label claim.

Grease and oil are not universal substitutes. For example, Wilson Combat describes its Ultima-Lube II Grease for heavy-wear areas and its low-viscosity Ultima-Lube II Oil for cold-weather use. That is product-specific guidance, not a rule that applies to every firearm. Use the oil only if the firearm maker’s instructions allow it. Wilson Combat lubricant guidance

How cold, heat, and heavy use affect the choice

Cold weather

Some lubricants thicken in cold and may interfere with operation. The U.S. Army’s technical manual discusses cold-weather lubricant transitions, but cautions that exact temperatures differ by weapon. Its procedures are military guidance, not a blanket prescription for consumer firearms. Follow the guidance for your own firearm and expected conditions. U.S. Army technical manual

Heat and sustained use

Look for the firearm maker’s instructions and the lubricant manufacturer’s stated range, but do not treat that range as proof of firearm performance during sustained use. A temperature specification for grease does not establish that every firearm will function throughout that range.

Heavy-wear contact points

Where the firearm maker approves grease, its tendency to stay in place may suit designated heavy-wear areas. Confirm the exact application point in the manual; a product advertised for firearms or severe conditions is not automatically appropriate for every part.

What else to check before choosing

  • Approved application: Match the product’s intended use to the exact part and the firearm manual.
  • Conditions: Consider expected cold, heat, and sustained use alongside both the firearm maker’s instructions and the lubricant’s stated range.
  • Materials and environment: Manufacturers make claims about corrosion protection, water resistance, and material compatibility. Check those claims against the firearm’s manual and materials.
  • Evidence: Manufacturer specifications describe the maker’s product claims; they do not establish a cross-brand winner. No independent head-to-head performance study is established here.

Make the decision without overreading the label

  1. Find the firearm manual’s lubrication instructions for the exact part.
  2. Rule out any lubricant type or application point the manual does not permit.
  3. For the remaining options, compare stated use, temperature specification, compatibility claims, and the conditions in which you expect to use the firearm.
  4. If the manual and product guidance leave a material question unresolved, contact the firearm maker before using the lubricant.

A reader asking about cold, humid conditions—or whether white lithium grease is suitable—should apply the same checks. The material here does not establish white lithium grease as suitable for firearms generally or for that specific combination of conditions; the firearm’s manual and maker remain the authority.
