iPads can access files on supported external USB drives and SD cards through the Files app and compatible apps. The right setup depends on your iPad’s port, the drive’s format and partition, and whether it needs more power than the iPad can supply.
How external storage works with iPad
Connect a compatible USB drive or SD card reader to your iPad, then open Files to browse and manage files. Apple also supports access through other compatible apps. A card reader can provide a separate photo workflow: Apple says you can import photos and videos from a memory card directly into Photos.
External storage expands the space available for files you keep on a drive or card; it does not change the iPad’s built-in storage capacity. Whether a particular drive appears and works depends on its connection, format, partition, and power requirements.

Check these compatibility requirements before buying
1. Identify your iPad’s port
Check the physical charging port and confirm the exact iPad model before choosing a drive or adapter. Apple’s USB-C model guidance includes iPad Pro (M4 and M5), selected earlier iPad Pro generations, iPad Air (M2, M3, M4, 4th and 5th generations), iPad mini (A17 Pro and 6th generation), and iPad (A16 and 10th generation). Lineups change, so verify your model in Apple’s USB-C iPad identification guide and its model-specific documentation.

3. Match the connector and reader
A USB-C iPad may connect directly to a compatible USB-C drive, but other drives and SD cards may need an adapter or reader. For Lightning iPads, Apple lists the Lightning-to-USB Camera Adapter and Lightning-to-USB 3 Camera Adapter; for card workflows, it lists USB-C-to-SD Card Camera Reader and Lightning-to-SD Card Camera Reader. Which accessory fits depends on the iPad and the external device. Apple’s external storage guide describes the supported connection options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Account for power
Some external hard drives need more power than the iPad connection provides. Apple describes using a powered USB hub with Thunderbolt or USB 4 iPads, and an externally powered Lightning-to-USB 3 Camera Adapter setup with Lightning iPads. Check the drive’s power requirements and the adapter or hub arrangement before relying on a portable connection.

Set up and use a drive or card
- Confirm the iPad model and port. Check the model documentation and decide whether the drive connects directly or needs an adapter or card reader.
- Verify the drive’s format and partition. It should use one data partition and a format Apple supports. Back up first if reformatting is necessary.
- Connect the storage. Attach the drive, reader, or suitable adapter. If the device requires more power, use the powered setup it specifies.
- Open Files and locate the device. Use the Files app to browse files on the connected storage, or use another app that supports access to external devices.
- For photo and video cards, open Photos to import. Connect a compatible card reader and use Photos’ import workflow to bring supported media into the iPad’s photo library.
What to verify when a device does not work
- It is not visible: Recheck the physical connection, adapter or reader compatibility, and the drive’s partition and file system.
- The drive powers on inconsistently or fails to mount: Check whether it needs external power. Apple documents powered-hub use for Thunderbolt/USB 4 iPads and an externally powered Lightning-to-USB 3 Camera Adapter arrangement for Lightning iPads.
- The card works as storage but not for importing: Confirm that the reader matches the iPad connection and that you are using Photos’ import workflow for photos and videos.
- You are considering reformatting: Copy needed files elsewhere first; reformatting may erase existing content.
