The right pair depends on your foot shape, walking surface and any prescribed inserts—not just the brand or size on the box.
Start with fit, not the label
Shoe sizes vary between brands and styles, so treat the size printed inside as a starting point. Try several options, measure both feet if possible, and fit the larger foot. If you can, shop later in the day, when feet may have expanded. Wear the socks you expect to use for walking.
Use the longest toe—not necessarily the big toe—to judge length. AAOS/OrthoInfo suggests about 1/2 inch between that toe and the shoe tip. Australian Podiatry Association guidance gives roughly 1 cm on one page and around 1.5 cm on another; Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust also gives about 1 cm. These are practical fitting guides, not a single medical rule. Check that the shoe is widest where your foot is widest, at the ball, and that your toes have enough width and depth to rest without being pinched or pushed together. Walk in the shoes before deciding
Fasten the shoes as you would normally wear them, using the laces, straps or buckles to secure your foot. Walk on a suitable surface and notice whether the heel stays in place, whether any seam rubs, and whether you feel pressure or pain. A shoe should bend around the toe joint area; it should not fold or collapse easily through the arch.

- ICONIC COMFORT: Enjoy all-day comfort with anatomical cushioning, anti-odor insole technology and arch support that uses 15% cushy plant-based BLOOM foam
- EASY, SECURE FIT: Women's lace up low top sneaker with lace-up front and padded collar to ensure a snug fit for active and everyday wear plus B+ ball girth & width in medium widths (a half girth/width more than the industry B) and D ball girth & width in wide width sizes for added comfort
- RETRO PLATFORM STYLE: Sporty and versatile water-resistant faux-leather platform sneakers with approx. 1 inch platform offer a modern boost with casual flair, perfect for travel and beyond. As seen (and loved) on TikTok.
- FEEL-GOOD FLEX: Ultra-flexible outsoles with extra grip and cushioning
- EASY CLEAN: Pre-treated with Easy Clean Repellant, a topical spray applied to the sidewall of the shoe only, to keep the sides of the shoe’s sole cleaner longer. Use water (only) on a household cloth to wipe sidewall of shoe. Individual results may vary.
A pair should feel comfortable at try-on. Do not accept pinching on the assumption that the shoe will become comfortable after a painful break-in period. If the length seems right but the forefoot feels tight, try a different width or shape rather than automatically sizing up; a longer shoe can leave the foot sliding.
AAOS/OrthoInfo warns that tight shoes can cause foot problems. Read its guidance on tight shoes and foot problems.
Match the shoe to where and how you walk
For city streets and pathways, the Royal College of Podiatry says trainers can be suitable. Its guidance highlights a stable base, broad contact with the ground and laces for fastening. For rougher or otherwise different terrain, choose footwear suited to that surface rather than assuming one everyday pair will work for every route. Royal College of Podiatry: walking footwear.

- ABZORB HEEL CUSHIONING - IMEVA midsole with ABZORB heel pad absorbs impact and provides added cushioning for all-day comfort during training and everyday wear
- SUEDE LEATHER UPPER - Quality suede upper delivers a classic, durable look with supportive structure that molds comfortably to your foot over time
- LACE-UP CLOSURE - Traditional lace-up design allows you to adjust the fit for maximum comfort and a secure feel during workouts and daily activities
- CUSHIONED FOOTBED - Lightly cushioned footbed provides an extra layer of soft comfort underfoot, keeping you supported through long days on your feet
- DURABLE OUTSOLE - Sturdy outsole construction offers reliable traction and long-lasting durability on gym floors, sidewalks, and everyday surfaces
Compare cushioning and stability while walking in the shoe, with your usual route and walking duration in mind. Breathable uppers may be worth considering, but materials and construction are factors to assess for your own comfort, not guarantees that a shoe will suit everyone. A shoe that feels soft in your hand still needs to hold your foot securely and feel comfortable as you walk.
Check space for prescribed inserts
If you use prescribed orthoses, try the shoes with them in place. A removable liner can help make room, but the insert should not crowd the foot or make the shoe tight. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust discusses footwear and orthoses in its advice on choosing shoes to reduce foot pain.

When to ask for individualized advice
These checks can help you compare shoes, but they cannot diagnose the cause of foot pain or identify the best shoe for a particular condition. If pain persists, or you have a known foot condition or need help accommodating an insert, ask a podiatrist or another appropriate health professional for an individual assessment. The Australian Podiatry Association says a podiatrist can assess fit and make recommendations; NHS guidance also addresses shoe choice for people with foot pain. In a Cleveland Clinic article published July 28, 2023, podiatrist Joy Rowland says: “The shoe needs to be comfortable, and it needs to fit well.” The article also describes walking shoes as cushioned and stable. Cleveland Clinic’s shoe-selection guidance.
