Choose clip-on earbuds if you want audio without sealing your ear canals, and can accept less isolation from noise. The right pair depends on the shape of your ears, how you take calls, where you listen, and whether you value awareness more than immersive sound. Compare the exact model’s fit, call performance, controls, and battery claims—not just its promise of comfort or “clear calls.”
What clip-on earbuds do—and what they do not
Clip-on open-ear earbuds sit around the outer ear rather than sealing the ear canal. Shokz describes the OpenDots Air as using a flexible JointArc with silicone contact surfaces; Bose describes its Ultra Open design as cuff-like. Both styles leave you able to hear surrounding sounds, but they do not isolate you from them.
That trade-off is useful when you want to follow a conversation or hear activity nearby while listening. It also means traffic, a busy office, or a loud train can compete with your audio. Open-ear listening is not a safety guarantee: keep volume and attention appropriate to your surroundings.

There can also be sound leakage. Bose says people nearby may notice audio from its second-generation Ultra Open earbuds at maximum volume in a very quiet setting. If privacy matters, or you often listen in noisy places, sealed in-ear or over-ear headphones may be a better match.

Choose the fit shape that works with your ears and accessories
Clip or cuff fit
A clip or cuff holds the audio unit around the outer ear. For example, Shokz says OpenDots Air has a flexible nickel-titanium JointArc, silicone contact surfaces, and interchangeable left and right earbuds. Its product page lists a weight of 6.3 g per earbud. Those details describe the product, but they cannot establish whether its pressure or shape will suit every ear.
Hook-over-ear fit
An ear-hook model wraps around the ear instead of clipping across it. Shokz OpenFit Air is an adjacent style rather than a clip-on; Shokz lists an adaptable hook and multipoint pairing. It can be worth comparing if a cuff feels uncomfortable or unstable, though glasses, hats, hair, and the shape of your ears can affect either style.

Test comfort and stability in your real routine
Fit is personal: a clip that feels secure to one wearer may press on another, and a loose fit may shift during movement. TechRadar’s EarFun Clip 2 review notes that preferences differ; What Hi-Fi?’s Huawei FreeClip 2 review reports that its reviewer found removing glasses or moving could dislodge the earbuds. Treat these as individual observations, not predictions. If possible, try a pair with your usual glasses and headwear, and check the return policy before buying.
Judge call quality separately from music quality
Open-ear earbuds can make calls convenient when you want to keep your ears unobstructed, but a manufacturer’s “clear calls” claim is not proof that your voice will sound clear in every setting. Check what microphone or voice-processing features the exact model advertises, then look for independent call impressions or samples recorded in both quiet and noisy environments.

Bose says its Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) have updated SpeechClarity voice pickup. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent comparison. Reviews of other models illustrate why model-specific evidence matters: What Hi-Fi?’s Huawei FreeClip 2 reviewer found calls less natural than some rivals, while Tom’s Guide’s Shokz OpenDots 2 reviewer reported their own call observations and limitations. Neither review establishes how every wearer or caller will experience those products.
Match music expectations to where you listen
Open designs trade isolation for access to ambient sound. Reviewers of open earbuds report that loud trains and planes can overwhelm playback, and that open designs may deliver less bass than sealed in-ear or over-ear headphones. If you mainly listen at home, at a desk, or while doing everyday tasks, that compromise may suit you. If you want forceful bass or consistent detail in noisy places, consider an isolating style instead.

Keep volume in mind: turning open earbuds up to overcome background noise can make leakage more noticeable to people nearby. Bose specifically notes this possibility at maximum volume in quiet conditions for its second-generation Ultra Open model.
Compare battery figures on equal terms
Advertised maximums are useful for shortlisting, but they are not directly comparable unless you know what they include and the conditions behind them. Shokz advertises up to 36 hours of listening for OpenDots Air; Bose’s Australia product page lists up to nine hours of playback for Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen). These are manufacturer-stated maxima from different product pages, not a shared test. Confirm whether a figure means a single charge or includes the case, and check the model generation and regional listing.

For a more useful comparison, look for single-charge playback, total playback with the charging case, quick-charge conditions, and whether optional features change the stated runtime. Shokz advertises up to 28 hours of battery life for OpenFit Air, with the case included in its marketing presentation; it is a hook-style alternative, not a clip-on.

Before buying, confirm how the earbuds handle playback, calls, and volume, and whether the controls can be changed in an app. If you regularly switch between a phone and computer, check for multipoint pairing rather than assuming every open-ear model supports it. Shokz lists multipoint for OpenFit Air, but that feature should not be assumed for its clip-on products.
Likewise, verify the exact model’s water-resistance rating and what the rating applies to before using earbuds for workouts or in wet conditions. Do not infer a rating or feature from another product in the same brand’s range.

- Decide why you want an open fit. Choose it for access to surrounding sound, not for noise isolation or private listening in a quiet room.

- Find call evidence for the exact model. Separate manufacturer processing claims from independent impressions, especially for calls in noisy surroundings.
- Match sound to your listening environment. If you need strong bass or reliable playback on loud transit, consider an isolating headphone style.
- Read battery and feature details on the exact listing. Check generation, region, case inclusion, multipoint support, app controls, and the scope of any water-resistance rating.
