For routine dirt, use your cleaner’s lighter or express mode; for embedded soil or a stubborn stain, choose its deeper-clean mode. Pet messes need a little more care: remove solids first, use only the machine-approved water and formula, then extract slowly and make dry passes to recover moisture. Settings and instructions differ by model, so check the cleaner manual and the carpet or rug care label before you start.
Choose the mode for the mess—and your machine
Mode names are not universal. On the BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro models covered by its guide, Express Clean is the lighter option, while MAX/DEEP lays down significantly more water for a deeper clean and takes longer to dry. That makes Express a practical choice for everyday dirt and MAX/DEEP a better fit for embedded soil, provided the carpet can tolerate the treatment.
On the Tineco Carpet One Spot Essentials, the labels mean something different: Spot is intended for tough messes, Auto adjusts water flow, and Suction absorbs water to reduce drying time. These are model-specific functions, not settings to transfer to another cleaner. Consult the exact product manual for its mode and pass instructions.
Prepare before treating a pet stain
- Check the surface and machine instructions. Confirm the cleaner is suitable for the carpet or rug, and follow the care label. If you are unsure about a delicate fiber, do not assume wet cleaning is safe.
- Remove solids and loose debris dry. BISSELL directs users of the cited ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro to dry-vacuum first; removing debris can help prevent clogging or failure. The cited Tineco FAQ does not recommend using its spot cleaner to pick up animal hair.
- Use only the specified water, fill line, and formula. For the cited BISSELL Pet Pro family, use warm tap water no hotter than 140°F/60°C. Its guide warns that hotter water can deform the tank and affect performance. The cited Tineco Spot Essentials FAQ specifies 39.2°F–104°F/4°C–40°C and warns against hot water. Follow your own model’s limit; neither range is universal.
- Check formula compatibility. BISSELL says of the cited model family, “Always use genuine BISSELL formulas in your machine to reduce possible damage to internal components and to optimize the performance of your machine.” Follow the formula guidance for your specific cleaner. The Tineco FAQ also says bleach is not recommended.
Treat and extract the stain
For applicable BISSELL Pet Pro units with CleanShot
If your model has the CleanShot feature, follow its guide: apply the treatment to the stain, let it soak for five minutes, then extract using the cleaning-mode procedure. CleanShot is not included on every carpet cleaner, so do not substitute this step for another model’s instructions.

Move slowly and recover moisture
Use the pass pattern specified for your cleaner. BISSELL directs users to move slowly and make dry passes until water is no longer visibly entering the nozzle. Tineco’s Suction mode is designed to absorb water after washing. Extra extraction takes time, but it can help reduce residual moisture; avoid repeatedly wetting the area when the machine’s instructions do not call for it.
Rental-machine example: Rug Doctor Pro Deep
Rug Doctor’s Pro Deep instructions call for a wet SOAP & SCRUB pass followed by a dry pass, with repetitions depending on how soiled the carpet is. This is that machine’s procedure, not a general setting or pass pattern for other cleaners.

Use extra caution on upholstery and stairs
Before using an upholstery or stair tool, check the item’s care tag. Rug Doctor says its tool permits water use on W or W/S labels; S or X means not to use that tool and to contact the manufacturer. Test an inconspicuous area and let it dry before proceeding, and avoid overwetting upholstery.
Finish with basic machine care
Empty the dirty-water tank after cleaning or when it is full. The cited BISSELL guide notes that a full tank can cause loss of suction; it also instructs users to rinse the tank and float stack and clear debris from the red filter. Follow your model’s cleaning and storage directions so residue does not remain in the machine.

What drying-time claims mean
BISSELL’s product page says Express Clean dries in about 30 minutes, but that figure is a manufacturer claim based on the user guide’s reference test: new carpet with protectant. BISSELL says results vary, so it is not a promise for every carpet, room, machine, or cleaning session. The cited guide separately says MAX/DEEP uses significantly more water and takes longer to dry.
