Choose budget earbuds by matching them to your ears and listening habits—not by counting features. Start with comfort and stability, then check whether the sound suits you, how long the battery lasts with your preferred settings, and whether the noise cancellation helps in the places you actually listen. Treat calls, exercise protection, and the live price as separate checks.
1. Check fit for the way you will use them
Fit is personal, and comfort over a long listening session is not the same as staying secure while running or working out. If possible, try different ear-tip sizes and move around with the earbuds in before deciding. A pair that feels fine while seated may loosen during exercise; one that stays put may still become uncomfortable over several hours.
For sports, look beyond the shape: check the model’s stated dust- and water-resistance rating and whether its design is intended to stay secure. RTINGS’ sports selection, for example, emphasizes stability hooks and protection on the Skullcandy Push Active, rather than treating general listening comfort as proof of workout suitability (RTINGS’ under-$100 guide).
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

There is no single sound balance that works for everyone. Some budget earbuds emphasize bass; others sound warmer or more relaxed. Listen to the default tuning if you can, especially with music you know well. If you like adjusting sound, check whether the companion app offers an equalizer (EQ) or presets.

EQ can make a default tuning more suitable, but it cannot make different earbuds identical. The Anker Soundcore Space A40 is one example: RTINGS describes its presentation as warm and relaxed and notes app EQ and presets. The Nothing Ear (3a) is another example for people who want more sound customization, including parametric EQ and LDAC support in RTINGS’ review (RTINGS’ under-$100 guide). Treat these as examples of different feature balances, not universal picks.
3. Compare battery life in the mode you will use
Look for runtime with the features you expect to leave on. A battery figure measured with ANC off may not answer the question for someone who uses noise cancellation throughout a commute. Also consider whether the case’s extra charges are useful for your routine; they extend listening time away from an outlet but do not replace the earbuds’ own per-charge runtime.

Its under-$100 roundup reports 6.8 hours for the CMF Buds Pro 2 and over nine hours for the Skullcandy Push Active; these are reviewer-reported product results, not a guarantee of your runtime. Your settings and use can affect how long a charge lasts. Compare like with like where possible, especially the ANC mode and whether other power-consuming features are enabled.

4. Match noise cancellation to the noise that bothers you
ANC is most useful when it reduces the sounds you want less of. Think about your actual environment: low-frequency engine rumble on a bus or plane is different from nearby conversation or sudden office sounds. Reviews can help identify strengths, but a general claim that a pair has ANC does not tell you how well it handles your main problem.

RTINGS describes the Space A40’s ANC as strong against low-frequency engine noise. Its reviews also report that the less expensive Soundcore P31i and the Nothing Ear (3a) are less effective against engine rumble. If that kind of noise is your priority, weigh that difference against price and the other features you value (RTINGS’ budget guide; RTINGS’ under-$100 guide).
5. Consider calls, exercise, and other needs separately
A pair can work well for music and ANC yet be a poor choice for calls. If you take frequent work calls, check microphone performance in reviews rather than assuming noise cancellation means your voice will sound clear. RTINGS reports poor microphone recording quality for the Space A40, while its work pick, the CMF Buds Pro 2, has clearer microphone recording but shorter reported battery life and ANC that does not match the Space A40.

Likewise, a sports-focused pair may trade away ANC. RTINGS’ sport pick, the Skullcandy Push Active, uses stability hooks and has dust- and water-protection features, but lacks ANC. Prioritize the feature tied to your main use instead of expecting one low-cost model to excel equally at commuting, calls, and workouts.
6. Use these reviewed models to understand the trade-offs
These examples are drawn from RTINGS’ 2026 reviews and illustrate different priorities. Recommendations, availability, and prices can change; check the current model, regional listing, seller, and live price before buying.
| Model | What the review highlights | Trade-off to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Anker Soundcore Space A40 | RTINGS names it its best budget wireless earbuds tested in its guide updated August 26, 2026. The review highlights strong ANC, warm sound with app EQ and presets, LDAC, multi-device pairing, just over eight hours with ANC on, and four additional case charges. | Poor microphone recording quality. Its price fluctuates; RTINGS says it tends to sit around $50, so verify the current listing rather than treating that as a fixed price. |
| Anker Soundcore P31i | RTINGS describes it as a lower-cost option with advantages in comfort and stability compared with the Space A40. | Less effective at isolating low-frequency rumble, according to RTINGS. |
| Nothing Ear (3a) | RTINGS highlights parametric EQ, LDAC, and sound customization; its reported battery life is just over six hours. | ANC is weaker against engine rumble than the Space A40. |
| CMF Buds Pro 2 | RTINGS’ work pick has clearer microphone recording than the Space A40. | RTINGS reports 6.8 hours of continuous battery life, and ANC that does not match the Space A40. |
| Skullcandy Push Active | RTINGS’ sport pick emphasizes stability hooks and dust- and water-protection features, with over nine hours of continuous battery life and three extra case charges in its review. | It lacks ANC. |
| MOONDROP SPACE TRAVEL 2 | RTINGS notes parametric EQ and community sound settings for listeners who like to adjust sound. | RTINGS notes comfort, build, and ANC trade-offs compared with its stronger general-purpose picks. |
