Choose Bluetooth headphones by how they sound and fit to you first, then check that your phone, computer, or other source supports the codec you plan to use. Labels such as LDAC, aptX, AAC, and “Hi-Res” describe capabilities—not a guarantee that a particular pair will sound better to you.
What matters most when choosing headphones for sound quality?
Start with the sound you enjoy, not the codec list. Compare bass, vocals and other midrange sounds, treble, detail, and dynamics using music you know. Review descriptions can help narrow choices, but they reflect a reviewer’s experience and are not a promise that you will hear the same result.
Fit and comfort matter too: headphones that sound appealing in a review may not suit your ears or head. Try them on where possible, and check the retailer’s return terms before buying. There is no standardized fit measurement in the sources cited here.
Then weigh practical features against your listening habits. Noise cancelling may matter for travel or noisy rooms; portability, call quality, battery life, and multipoint may matter for other uses. These features can make a pair a better everyday choice without proving it has better sound for every listener.

Does the Bluetooth codec matter?
A codec is an audio-coding format used to transmit sound over Bluetooth. The source device and headphones both need to support the codec for it to be used. If they do not share support, playback uses another supported codec instead. Check the specifications for both devices rather than relying on the headphone box alone. Sony’s WH-1000XM6 help guide says, “All Bluetooth devices support SBC.” That is Sony’s statement in a model-specific manufacturer guide, not an independent survey of every Bluetooth device.
Codec support can also depend on settings. Sony notes that the source may need to be configured to use a supported codec. For the WH-1000XM6 specifically, the guide says Sony Sound Connect app settings affect LE Audio availability. Confirm the active codec and relevant settings for your own source-and-headphone combination rather than assuming the highest-listed option is in use. A codec with greater capability cannot add detail missing from the audio source, and codec labels alone do not determine headphone tuning, comfort, or personal preference. TechRadar notes that source and headphone quality can matter more to enjoyment than codec choice. The available evidence does not establish a universal listening-test ranking across codecs, headphones, phones, and listeners, so treat codec support as a compatibility and capability factor—not a sound-quality verdict. How to check compatibility before buying
- Identify your playback source. Check the exact phone, computer, tablet, or other device you will use, including its software and audio settings.
- Look up the headphone’s supported codecs. Use the manufacturer’s specifications or help guide for the exact model; support can differ between products from the same brand.
- Find the overlap. A codec can be used only when both the source and headphones support it. Otherwise, the connection falls back to another supported option.
- Check whether it must be enabled. Review the source’s Bluetooth or audio settings and any model-specific app instructions. Confirm what is active after pairing if your devices expose that information.
- Listen to your own setup if possible. Compare the sound and connection behavior with music you know. A codec specification does not guarantee an audible improvement in your particular setup.
How to read codec lists without overvaluing them
Codec support is model-specific. Sony’s WH-1000XM6 guide lists SBC, AAC, and LDAC for Classic Audio music playback over A2DP, and LC3 for LE Audio. Its WH-1000XM5 guide lists SBC, AAC, and LDAC for A2DP music playback. These lists describe those models and playback modes; they should not be generalized to every headphone or to every connection. For a practical example, What Hi-Fi? describes the WH-1000XM6 as a premium over-ear headphone with detailed, dynamic sound, while noting tradeoffs including no aptX HD and no audio via USB-C. That is an editorial review judgment, not a guarantee for every listener. The listed codecs and review observations show why a feature list alone cannot settle whether a headphone is right for you.
