Both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S play digital games. Choose Series S if its 1440p design target and storage options fit your display and library; choose Series X if you want Xbox’s native-4K positioning, more built-in storage choices, or the option of a disc drive. Series X is also available in a 1TB all-digital configuration, so choosing digital games does not require choosing Series S.

What matters most for a digital-game library?

For most digital-only buyers, compare the consoles on three practical points: the display target, the storage configuration you can buy locally, and the price in your market. A disc drive is not necessary for a digital library, but it may matter if you might want physical games or disc playback later.

Xbox’s product pages list these configurations and describe their display positioning. Availability varies by market, and the resolution figures are product-level targets rather than guarantees for every game. Xbox Series S specifications and Xbox Series X specifications are the best starting point for checking the model offered in your region.

Choose based on your screen and games

Choose Series S for a 1440p-focused setup

Series S is a sensible fit if you are comfortable with its 1440p design target and the games you play look good on your display at their actual output settings. Xbox says it can upscale to 4K, but upscaling is not the same as a game rendering natively at 4K. Check title-specific details if resolution is a priority.

Choose Series X if native-4K positioning matters

Xbox positions Series X for native 4K, which makes it the more natural fit if you are choosing around a 4K display and want the console designed for that target. Actual resolution and performance still depend on the game. Xbox’s “up to 120 FPS” capability also depends on supported content and a compatible display; it is not a universal frame rate.

Pick the storage configuration for your installed library

Xbox lists Series S in 512GB and 1TB configurations, and Series X in 1TB and 2TB configurations. That makes the exact model important: a 1TB Series S and a 1TB Series X have the same stated capacity, while the 2TB Series X provides the largest listed built-in option. Configuration availability can differ by market.

Digital ownership does not mean every game must stay installed at once. If you expect to keep many large games installed, compare the capacity of the specific console listing with your likely library, then consider expansion options.

Adding storage

  • Xbox Storage Expansion Card: Xbox says the card matches the internal SSD experience. It is an optional add-on, so factor its separate purchase into your storage decision.
  • USB 3.1 external hard drive: Xbox lists support for USB 3.1 external HDDs. Xbox does not make the same internal-SSD performance claim for a USB hard drive, so do not assume it is equivalent to the Expansion Card.

Xbox’s comparison page covers both the Storage Expansion Card and USB external HDD support.

Decide whether you may need a disc drive

Series S is all-digital and does not support disc-based games. Series X is not always a disc console: Xbox also lists a 1TB all-digital Series X alongside disc-drive configurations. If a disc drive matters, confirm that the exact Series X model in the retailer’s listing includes one rather than relying on the Series X name alone.

If your library will remain digital and you do not expect to use discs, the all-digital models keep that choice straightforward. If you already own disc-based games or want the option of physical games later, select a disc-drive Series X configuration.

Digital game compatibility and price

Xbox says Smart Delivery gives buyers the best available version of a supported game for the console they play on. Xbox also says owned digital games in its backward-compatible catalog can be installed on these consoles. Both claims are limited to supported games and the applicable catalog; they do not mean every title receives an upgrade or is backward compatible.

Xbox states that prices and configuration options vary by market and retailer. There is no single price gap that applies everywhere, so compare the exact storage and disc-drive models available to you rather than comparing Series S and Series X by name alone.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Check your display: If 1440p positioning suits your setup, consider Series S; if native-4K positioning is a priority, consider Series X.
  2. Choose capacity: Compare the listed 512GB or 1TB Series S and 1TB or 2TB Series X configurations against the number of games you want installed.
  3. Decide about discs: Series S has no disc support. For Series X, verify whether the specific configuration has a drive or is all-digital.
  4. Compare local offers: Check the price of the exact console configuration and account for any storage expansion you plan to add.
