If you buy games digitally and do not need discs, Xbox Series S is usually the simpler fit. Choose a disc-drive Xbox Series X if native 4K, more internal-storage options, or the ability to shop for compatible physical games is worth paying for. Xbox also sells an all-digital Series X, so confirm the exact model before buying.
Which Xbox is better for digital game deals?
Both consoles can buy and play digital games from the Xbox Store, and both can access eligible digital games you already own. The main deal-related difference is that Series S has no disc drive. A disc-drive Series X adds a second way to find games: compatible physical copies, including used, borrowed, or discounted discs.
That does not make Series X automatically cheaper over time. Digital prices and physical offers vary, and the available evidence does not establish a consistent price gap or long-term savings figure. Compare the exact console configuration and games you intend to buy. Xbox’s console comparison shows the product configurations; availability can differ by market.
Compare the features that affect your buying decision
| Factor | Xbox Series S | Xbox Series X | Why it matters |
| Physical games | All digital; cannot play discs | Disc-drive and all-digital configurations exist | Only a disc-drive model can use compatible physical-game offers, borrowed discs, or used copies. |
| Stated gaming resolution | Designed for 1440p; can upscale to 4K | Native 4K capability | Choose based on your display and preferred image output. |
| Internal storage options shown by Xbox | 512GB or 1TB | 1TB or 2TB, depending on variant | More room can reduce how often you manage installed games; verify the specific SKU. |
| Digital Store and compatible owned games | Supported | Supported | Both offer digital purchasing; Series S’s disc-free design is the important limitation. |
| Game Pass discounts | Available for eligible plans and titles | Available for eligible plans and titles | Discount eligibility is not exclusive to either console. |
| Console price | Varies by model, market, and retailer | Varies by model, market, and retailer | Check current local offers rather than relying on an evergreen price difference. |
Xbox advertises up to 120 FPS for both consoles, but that is a maximum, not a guarantee for every game. Actual resolution and frame rate depend on the game and display. See Xbox’s comparison page for current model details.

What you give up by choosing a disc-free Series S
Series S cannot play physical games. That rules out disc-based bargains and borrowing, and it means you cannot use a disc as a way to access a game you already own. If your library includes compatible backward-compatible digital Xbox titles, Xbox says those titles appear in your install library when you sign in. Compatibility is limited to Xbox’s supported catalog; it does not mean every older game works.
On a disc-drive Series X, compatible disc-based backward-compatible games require the disc to remain in the drive while you play. Series X all-digital models do not restore this option, despite sharing the Series X name. Check the exact configuration and compatibility details on Xbox’s backward compatibility page.

How to find digital discounts without overpaying
- Open the Xbox Store deals page for your region. Search the exact game and edition you want; editions and regional prices can differ. Xbox’s US deals page displayed 749 listed games when accessed in 2026, but its count and offers change and do not establish prices elsewhere.
- Add games to your wish list. Xbox describes Store wish lists and sale notifications as features for tracking items and offers. Availability of notifications can depend on the Store experience. Details are on Xbox’s wish-list support page.
- Check the Game Pass discount for the specific game and plan. Xbox says Ultimate, Premium, and Essential members can receive up to 50% off select games; some membership tiers receive up to 20% off select games in the Game Pass library. These are maximum discounts on eligible titles, based on Microsoft Store prices, and are not combined with other offers or redeemable for cash. Confirm current terms and eligibility on Xbox Game Pass.
- Compare the discount with the subscription cost. Add up the plan cost over the period you expect to use it, then compare that amount with buying the games individually at sale prices. A discount on one eligible purchase does not by itself make a subscription worthwhile.
Subscription access is not the same as owning a game
Game Pass can provide access to a changing game catalog as well as eligible purchase discounts. A catalog game may leave the service, so if you want lasting access, compare buying it during a sale with the recurring subscription cost. Xbox’s catalog page describes a changing library but does not establish individual departure dates.

How much storage should you choose?
Xbox lists Series S configurations with 512GB or 1TB of internal storage, and Series X configurations with 1TB or 2TB, depending on the model. The larger option can be more convenient if you keep many games installed, but installed-game sizes and your habits determine how quickly space runs out. Check the storage capacity of the exact console SKU rather than relying on the family name.

Xbox also offers a separate expansion-card option that it says matches the console’s custom SSD experience. It adds to the system cost, so check current local accessory pricing before treating expansion as a cheaper alternative to buying a higher-capacity console. Current configurations are listed on Xbox’s comparison page.

- Choose Series S if you buy digitally, do not need discs, are comfortable with its 1440p design, and find a storage configuration that suits your library.
- Choose a disc-drive Series X if native 4K capability, additional storage choices, or access to compatible physical-game deals matters enough to justify the higher capability tier.
- Consider an all-digital Series X if you want Series X capabilities but do not need discs. It does not provide the physical-game deal option of a disc-drive model.
Console prices, configurations, discounts, and Game Pass terms vary over time and by region. Check the local Xbox Store and exact model listing before comparing total cost.
