Choose Xbox Game Pass if you expect to play several games in its library during the months you subscribe and are comfortable losing access when your subscription ends or a game leaves. Buy a Call of Duty game if you expect to return to that specific title over a longer period and want access without keeping Game Pass active. Compare your expected subscription cost with the current price of the exact game edition, then factor in your platform, region, and other games you would use.
What you get with Game Pass versus a purchase
Game Pass is time-limited access to a changing catalog, not ownership of every game you play through it. Xbox says subscribers can access library games until their subscription is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the library. A purchase is the more direct option for continued access to the specific game you bought, subject to platform and service requirements.

Use the current local prices for the plan and edition you would actually choose. A simple starting calculation is:
#1 Best Overall
- XBOX CROSS-GEN BUNDLE – Includes Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 for Xbox Series X, and Xbox One devices with a disc drive.
- CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS 7 – Treyarch and Raven Software are bringing players the most mind-bending Black Ops ever.
- CAMPAIGN MODE – Squad up or go solo in an innovative Co-Op Campaign that redefines the Black Ops experience. Take on high-stakes challenges across a wide spectrum of environments, from the neon-lit rooftops of Japan to the Mediterranean coast, and even into the deepest corners of the human psyche.
- MULTIPLAYER MODE – Multiplayer explodes out of the gate with 16 electrifying 6v6 maps and two 20v20 maps at launch. From futuristic Tokyo vistas to the frozen, unforgiving wilds of Alaska, every environment is brimming with danger and opportunity. Master a cutting-edge arsenal and outmaneuver your enemies with an evolved Omnimovement system.
- ROUND-BASED ZOMBIES MODE – The nightmare begins where reality ends. Trapped in the heart of the Dark Aether, the crew is thrust into a vast, ever-shifting hellscape. This isn’t just survival. It’s a descent into madness.
Expected subscription cost = number of months you plan to subscribe × current monthly plan price.
Then compare that result with the live purchase price of the exact Call of Duty edition. If you would play other included games during those months, that additional use can make Game Pass more worthwhile, but its value depends on what you personally would otherwise play.
As a dated US example, Xbox’s Game Pass page listed these monthly prices when retrieved on October 7, 2026:

Black Ops 7: a current example, not a franchise-wide rule
Xbox lists Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 as a standalone Cross-Gen Bundle for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox on PC, with a release date of November 21, 2025. On the US Xbox Store page retrieved October 7, 2026, the bundle was listed at $69.99 standard and $34.99 on a temporary sale. The discounted price is not a lasting price; confirm the offer and edition before using it in your comparison.
Xbox also describes subscription access for Black Ops 7. Its store listing says the cloud-playable game is included with Ultimate, while purchase is required to stream with Essential or Premium. Check the listing for your exact plan, platform, and region because access and features can differ.

Which option fits your situation?
Game Pass is more likely to suit you if
- You plan to play multiple games in the catalog while subscribed, not just one Call of Duty title.
- You prefer spreading the cost across the months you play rather than paying the purchase price upfront.
- You accept that access can end when the subscription expires or the game leaves the catalog.
- The relevant game and plan are available for your region and platform.
Buying is more likely to suit you if
- You expect to keep returning to one Call of Duty game for longer than you would subscribe.
- You want access to the purchased game without maintaining a Game Pass subscription.
- You have checked the exact edition and platform and found its current price acceptable.
Before you decide
- Pick the exact game and edition. Compare the edition you intend to play, not a different bundle or platform version.
- Confirm platform and region availability. Check the game’s Xbox listing and the plan’s terms for your country and device.
- Check whether the game is included with your plan. Do not assume all Call of Duty titles or all Game Pass tiers provide the same access.
- Estimate your subscription months. Multiply that number by the current monthly price shown for your region.
- Compare with the purchase price at checkout. Treat sales as temporary and base the decision on the price actually offered when you buy.
- Include the rest of the catalog in your judgment. If you would use several included games, that can favor subscribing; if you mainly want one title over a long stretch, buying may fit better.
