Choose the console that keeps your most important games playable—not the one with the bigger-sounding backward-compatibility claim. Make a list of the specific games you own, note whether each is digital or on disc, then check compatibility, saves, upgrades, and required hardware title by title. An Xbox purchase does not become a PlayStation license, or vice versa.
Start with the games you would actually miss
Write down your must-play titles and the details that affect whether you can keep using them:
- Which console generation the game is for.
- Whether you own it digitally or on disc.
- Whether you need its add-ons, saved progress, or online features.
Then check the platform’s compatibility information and the publisher’s support page for each important game. Xbox Series X|S supports Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles; support for the older generations is selective. PS5 plays the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, but Sony lists exceptions and warns that some compatible games may have missing features or unexpected behavior. Neither platform’s general compatibility statement guarantees every game in your collection will work. Check Xbox backward-compatible games and Sony’s list of PS4 games playable on PS5.

Check whether your games are digital or on disc
If your games are digital
Digital purchases generally belong to the store and account ecosystem where you bought them. Sony says PS4 and cross-generation PlayStation Store purchases are available in the libraries on both PS4 and PS5. That does not make an Xbox purchase a PlayStation license or a PlayStation purchase an Xbox license; treat ownership as platform-specific unless the publisher explicitly says otherwise.
On Xbox Series X|S, supported digital backward-compatible games you own can appear in Ready to Install. Confirm that each older title is supported before you choose a console based on it.

If your games are on disc
Check the exact console model and drive configuration before buying. Xbox Series S is digital-only. For supported Xbox backward-compatible disc games, the console downloads the game, but you must keep the disc inserted to play. PS4 discs require a PS5 with a disc drive and must remain inserted; they cannot be used with PS5 Digital Edition. PS5 does not support PS3 discs.

Sony also says a disc-based PS4-to-PS5 upgrade may require the original disc and a disc-drive PS5. A digital-only model therefore may not preserve the practical value of a disc collection even when the game itself is compatible.

Do not confuse game ownership with saves or upgrades
Saved progress and cross-platform play
Keeping a game license and keeping its save are separate questions. Sony documents ways to transfer supported data from PS4 or another PS5, but eligibility depends on the game and source/account conditions. Sony also says PS5 saved data cannot be copied to USB. Progress between Xbox and PlayStation depends on the individual game. Microsoft’s Store policy says developers may choose whether to sync progress, and Microsoft Store-managed digital add-on content generally may not roam across gaming networks. Square Enix, for example, says Outriders progress does not transfer between PlayStation and Xbox. Check the publisher’s support information for every game whose progress matters: Microsoft Store policies, version 7.20 and Square Enix’s Outriders progress-transfer answer.

Upgrades and subscription access
A PS4 game may have a PS5 upgrade, but Sony says the offer can be free, paid, or time-limited depending on the title. Confirm the current terms for the specific game rather than assuming an upgrade is included. Sony also says a playable PS4 game obtained through PlayStation Plus can be downloaded on PS5 while you remain a member; access depends on membership and the current service terms. Subscription access is not the same as owning a game outright. Compare the current catalog and terms in your region only after you have identified which titles you need; a game’s presence in a subscription catalog can change.

Make the choice with a title-by-title checklist
- List the games that matter most. Include generation, disc or digital format, add-ons, and save data you want to keep.
- Verify compatibility. Use the Xbox backward-compatibility list or Sony’s PS4-on-PS5 list, then check publisher support for uncertain titles.
- Match the console to your format. If you rely on discs, choose a drive-equipped model that can use them; a digital-only console cannot read your existing discs.
- Check progress and multiplayer separately. Confirm cross-save, cross-play, and any transfer requirements for each priority game; none follows automatically from compatibility.
- Confirm upgrades and subscription terms. Look up the current offer and access conditions for the exact title, country, and service.
- Compare local console cost last. Once you know which model preserves the most value in your library, compare models and ongoing costs available in your market.
Account for limited or changing compatibility programs
Microsoft announced an Xbox Insider test of a disc-to-digital feature on August 26, 2026, with testing set to begin August 31. The announcement says most Xbox One and Series X disc games support it, but describes an Insider test—not a general release—and does not establish that every disc qualifies. Check the current rollout and eligibility for the exact game before relying on it. Read Xbox Wire’s announcement.
A separate Xbox Wire post dated July 22, 2026 described an early-release backward-compatibility-on-PC program. Its initial rollout named four original Xbox games and said existing digital console licenses for those titles carried over to PC or supported handhelds. That limited PC program is not a general Xbox-to-PlayStation transfer or evidence that all Xbox games work on PC. Read the Xbox Wire announcement.
