For a Steam indie game, choose premium pricing when players can understand the value of the complete game before buying; choose free-to-play when the game can support ongoing engagement and optional purchases; and consider a free demo when hands-on play can help buyers judge a paid game. Steam’s documented demo feature is free: it does not support a paywall that asks players to pay to continue the same game.

Compare what each model asks the player to buy

Model What the player pays for Best fit to investigate Main cost or risk
Premium game Full game access through an upfront purchase A complete experience whose value can be explained before purchase Purchase friction and whether the price matches the game’s scope and comparable titles
Free-to-play Free access, with optional purchases such as DLC or in-game items A game designed to attract and retain players while making optional spending a good fit Player acquisition and retention; transaction and backend operations if using microtransactions
Paid game with a free demo The full game is paid; a sample is free A game where trying its core loop or quality can reduce uncertainty Demo quality, representativeness, and release timing

This is a decision framework based on Steam’s documented features and guidance, not a performance ranking. Steam’s materials do not establish that one model earns more than another for indie games generally.

When premium pricing makes sense

Premium pricing is a straightforward value exchange: the player pays once for access to the full game. It is worth considering when the game is complete enough to evaluate through its description, screenshots, trailer, reviews, and comparable titles, and when a recurring monetization system would not suit the experience.

Do not set the price solely by trying to be cheaper than other indie games. Steam recommends considering expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer features, Early Access plans, comparable games, future promotions, reviews, and customer feedback. Look at titles similar in nature and scope, not just games with a superficially similar genre label. Steam states that pricing decisions are in the developer’s hands: Steamworks Pricing.

Plan for launch and later promotions

Think through the price alongside the launch state and promotion plan. A game launching in Early Access, a short linear game, and a replayable multiplayer game can present different value propositions; none automatically dictates a particular price. Compare similar releases and the feedback customers give them, then account for the promotions you expect to run. Steam provides pricing and discount tools, but the platform does not supply a universal formula for the right price.

Set regional prices deliberately

Steam offers regional price-conversion tools based on exchange rates, purchasing power, or a combination of factors. These are starting points rather than a substitute for judgment: consider local economic conditions and comparable entertainment products, then review the suggested prices. Steam warns that a product without a price in a customer’s local currency may be unavailable to people who rely on that currency. See Steam’s currency and pricing guidance.

When free-to-play fits—and what it requires

Free-to-play lowers the initial access barrier, but it changes the product and operating model. It is a candidate when broad access, ongoing engagement, and optional spending fit the game’s design and the team can support the work of attracting and retaining players. Steam supports free games monetized through DLC or in-game purchases.

If the game uses microtransactions, include the operational burden in the decision. Steam describes the need for a reliable, secure backend to manage transactions, inventory, entitlements, and fraud reconciliation. These are not incidental details: they affect the systems the team must build or operate. Steam also says player acquisition and retention are important for this model. Its store largely responds to customer interest, and it counts in-game revenue for free-to-play titles in a way similar to paid-game sales; that does not make free access a guaranteed visibility shortcut. Details are in Steamworks’ free-to-play documentation.

Check how the model affects promotion

Steam says free-to-play games generally are not eligible for curated Daily Deals, Midweek Deals, or Weekend Deals spotlights, while other curated marketing may be available depending on a game’s scale and success. Treat that as one platform-specific consideration, not a prediction of discovery or sales.

Use a free demo to help sell a paid game

A free demo lets players try a sample before deciding whether to buy the full game. Steam describes demos as a way for customers to inform a purchase decision and recommends making the demo high quality and representative of the real experience. A weak or misleading sample can undermine confidence rather than build it.

Steam generally recommends releasing a demo at launch, while noting that an earlier release can make sense in some circumstances. Decide what the demo needs to prove—such as the core loop, controls, pacing, or technical quality—and release it when that sample is polished enough to stand on its own. Steam links a demo’s store page to the full game and says demos can appear in places where free games appear. See Steamworks Demos.

Can you charge for a demo on Steam?

Steam’s documented demo option is free. Its pricing FAQ says, “Steam does not support models where a customer is blocked and needs to pay to continue playing.” In other words, do not structure the same Steam game as a trial that stops and demands payment to unlock continued play. Steam points developers toward offering a free demo alongside the paid full game. The restriction described here is Steam’s; the available platform guidance does not establish rules for other stores or every separately packaged prologue. Check the relevant store’s current policies before applying it elsewhere: Steamworks Pricing FAQ.

Make the decision in a practical order

  1. Define the sale. Decide whether you are selling one complete game, an ongoing experience with optional purchases, or a paid game whose value may be easier to judge through a free sample.
  2. Test the premium case. Compare similar games’ scope, expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer features, launch state, promotions, reviews, and customer feedback. Do not treat a competitor’s price as an automatic template.
  3. Test the free-to-play operation. Decide how the game will attract and retain players, whether optional purchases fit the experience, and—if using microtransactions—how transactions, inventory, entitlements, security, and fraud reconciliation will be handled.
  4. Test the demo’s job. Identify what uncertainty the sample should reduce, make it representative and polished, and choose a release time that serves that purpose. On Steam, treat the demo as free and separate from the paid full game.
  5. Review regional pricing. Use Steam’s conversion tools as a reference, check local conditions and comparable entertainment products, and ensure relevant currency prices are set.

Steam pricing changes to account for

Steam’s published pricing rules are platform-specific and can change. At the time of its documentation, Steam says initial prices and proposed price adjustments are reviewed by Valve and usually processed within one or two business days. It asks developers to wait 30 days after release before changing a price, subject to an exception for correcting a major pricing error; a price increase can trigger a 30-day discount cooldown.

Steam also asks for at least one week’s notice when switching a paid game to free. For a free-to-paid change, its pricing FAQ says existing owners of the free license retain the ability to play and asks for one week’s notice of the business-model change. Because minimum prices, currencies, and change rules are operational details that may be updated, check the live Steamworks Pricing page before setting a launch plan.
