Choose the console that supports the games you most want to play—not the one with the stronger brand reputation. Make a shortlist, check each game’s current official platform listing, then factor in your friends’ games, subscription access, console model, and local price. Availability and subscription catalogs can change, so verify details before buying.
1. Check your must-play games one by one
Write down the games you expect to play over the next year. For each one, check its current official store or publisher listing and record the platform, release status, and how you intend to access it. Check the exact console generation: a listing for an older PlayStation or Xbox does not by itself confirm support on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.

Use the official PlayStation PS5 games page as a starting point for PlayStation listings. Xbox Wire’s June 8, 2025 showcase recap is useful for the titles it announced, but an announcement is not proof that a game is currently released. Confirm a title’s present status on its current official listing before deciding.
“Exclusive” is a dated, title-specific label
Platform availability can broaden over time, so treat exclusivity as a claim about a particular game at a particular time—not a permanent summary of an entire library. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s September 15, 2026 press-release index entry describes Marvel’s Wolverine as launching worldwide exclusively on PS5. In contrast, Xbox Wire’s 2025 showcase recap listed Gears of War: Reloaded for both Xbox Series X|S and PS5. These are examples about those titles, not a complete ranking of either console’s games.

2. Follow your friends’ actual multiplayer games
If you play online with specific people, list the games you expect to play together and check each game’s current cross-play support. Cross-play means players on different platforms can play together; it is not universal. If carrying progress between platforms matters to you, check cross-progression separately.
For example, Xbox Wire’s 2025 announcement said Gears of War: Reloaded supports cross-play and cross-progression. A September 24, 2026 PlayStation.Blog announcement said Luma Island supports play across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Those announcements establish support for those games, not for every multiplayer title. Check the game publisher’s current information for the games your group plays.

3. Compare subscription access with your shortlist
Do not choose a subscription by name alone. Compare the current tier, the specific games included, whether access is by download or streaming, and whether the relevant features and catalog are available in your region. A game appearing in a subscription catalog is not the same as owning it, and catalog membership can change.

PlayStation’s US PlayStation Plus page describes three tiers: Essential includes monthly games; Extra adds a downloadable Game Catalog; and Premium adds a Classics Catalog, streaming options, and trials. Sony says PS3 Classics are streaming-only. Features and game availability may vary by region and over time, so check the current plan terms and catalog where you live.

Checking Game Pass listings
The Microsoft Store’s US catalog can be filtered for Game Pass titles and cross-platform multiplayer. Treat an “included with Game Pass” label as a current listing, not a promise of permanent access: confirm that the game remains included before buying a console or relying on it as your main way to play.

After narrowing your choice by games and friends, compare the specific console models available to you. Model configuration matters if you want to use discs, and a physical edition must exist for the exact game you want. Before relying on lending, resale, or boxed copies, verify that the console has a disc drive and that the game has a compatible physical edition.

Compare local console prices, bundles, subscription fees, and the games you expect to buy. These amounts and configurations depend on region and can change; the official pages cited here do not establish a universal price winner. Check current local listings and plan terms rather than assuming one platform costs less.

- Mark each must-play game: confirm PS5 availability, Xbox Series X|S availability, or both on its current official listing.
- Separate released games from announcements: do not count an announced title as playable until its release is confirmed.
- Check your group’s multiplayer needs: verify cross-play and, if needed, cross-progression for each relevant game.
- Price the access you will actually use: compare buying games individually with the current subscription catalog and terms in your region.
- Check hardware and local cost: confirm the exact model’s disc configuration, compatible physical editions, price, and bundle contents.
If one console supports more of your must-play games, or is the only choice for a game you consider essential, that is a strong reason to choose it. If your shortlist is split or mostly shared, let your friends’ supported games, subscription value for your own habits, physical-game preference, and local model price break the tie. Recheck the listings before purchase because platform plans and catalogs can change.
